IGT, 9/6, NYM@PIT

Edgy MD
Sep 06 2022 09:39 AM

Taijuan Walker attacks Pittsburgh while Mitch Keller seeks to defend. Keller is from the Robin Yount School of ballplayers who had been torn between baseball and golf before choosing the former.

Slumping Daniel Vogelbach returns to visit the organization that dealt him off. Vogelbounty Collin Holderman had produced a 6.75 ERA before hitting the Injured List with right shoulder soreness on August 26. Two days ago, he was moved to the 60-Day Injured List, and that effectively ends his season.

This will be the Mets' first look at Oneil Cruz, the Pirates' 6'7" rookie shortstop. He's hitting near the Mendoza Line, but with a dozen homers and the novelty of being a 6'7" rookie shortstop. He is one of three active Pirate infielders with baseball-unique first names, along with Ke'Bryan Hayes (son of Charlie), and Tucupita Marcano, who hails from Tucupita, Venezuela.

Manager Derek Shelton is in his third season in charge and hopes to see a fourth. Even the Pirate coaches are largely unfamiliar names.

Hopefully, Taijuan doesn't swat a fair ball away from him again. 6:35 PM start.

No real histories to speak of other than perhaps, Naquin:

The Mets appear to shot their load making a statement against the Dodgers. The offense apparently wore itself out in that series and has nothing left for the "weaker" teams.

The A' are putting up more a fight on the Mets behalf than are the Mets. The Braves lead 6-5 going to the home half (A's) of the 4th.

I regret nothing. Fangraphs playoff odds have Mets at 100% chance of making the postseason. For that to not happen requires something far different than what we've seen here (a minor stumble).

Mets are on pace for 100+ wins, which would be the second best season in team history.

Maybe it'll take longer than we'd like but I still think the Mets hold off Atlanta by virtue of the weaker schedule.

We have entirely too much faith in the 'easy schedule' while trying to hold off a team that has a mostly favorable schedule themselves, is 10.5 games better

since June 1, 3.5 better since August 1, and owns a better run differential [+155 vs +115] for the season.
