Re: IGT September 7, Day/Night Game 1 at Pittsburgh

Lotta lefties in the Pittsburgh lineup, and the bottom half of their lineup is mostly low-average, young reserves trying to get their feet wet.

Mets move Alonso in the lineup for the first time in a while.

Re: IGT September 7, Day/Night Game 1 at Pittsburgh

Alonso batted second 70 times in 2019, 4 times in 2020 and 30 times last year. This is his first time in that spot this season. In 2022 so far, he's hit third 5 times and cleanup 130 times.

Re: IGT September 7, Day/Night Game 1 at Pittsburgh

I think there have been some analytics that say that the 2 hole is the best place to put your power hitter. There's some good rationale for that, particularly now that a position player is in the 9 spot. Plenty of likelihood that the 2 batter will come up with runners on base, and over the course of the season, the #2 spot will get more PAs than the #4 spot.

Not that that was Buck's rationale.

I'm guessing that this is the rescheduled game?

That and a day game in September for a back-end team can make for some scarce crowding. I should have driven out.

Also, I wanted to send Escobar on Nido's double. A 30% chance of scoring, and perhaps less, would have made it worth a shot.

On the other hand, the relay man on that play would have been that alien mutant Oneil Cruz, so maybe Cora knew what he was doing.

Re: IGT September 7, Day/Night Game 1 at Pittsburgh

Escobar didn't have a .30% chance of scoring

Cruz was receiving the relay right about as Escobar was reaching 3rd and he was maybe 40 feet behind 3rd base.

Escobar would have been out by 20 feet had he tried.

Another lethargic day for the offense; at least Bassett looks to be on point.

Re: IGT September 7, Day/Night Game 1 at Pittsburgh

Here's one. He's a couple of steps into his braking and the ball's apparently in the air. You can make an educated guess as to where, but it's inconclusive. It's also not clear how many steps into braking Escobar is.

It's certainly likely that he's out. I disagree that he's automatically out by 20 feet or that he had a 0.30% chance of scoring.

Cool to unload on the "starter" after touching up the "opener" first. It's like trying to get into the bullpen and realizing that, oh yeah, you've already gotten into the bullpen.

So, in a nod to G & K's discussion about pitching roles, I guess the 'bulk' pitcher is the guy whose job it is to give up runs in bulk.

Re: IGT September 7, Day/Night Game 1 at Pittsburgh

Cruz got the ball just as Esco was hitting 3rd. Now if he hadn't been braking he might have been two, maybe three strides past, meaning that the throw home would have reached the catcher with E.E. around the mid-point and not much more.

It wasn't the smart call to hold him, it was the only call.

I'd be happier still if we could score runs via a series of sequential singles and doubles, instead of just taking 27 cracks at a dinger like they've been doing.

this x1000

the thing i'd been so impressed with of the mets offense all year was their ability to grind out good at bats, be patient, take the smaller hits, and not sell out for light tower power. and of late, all that seems to have gone away as the braves have gotten closer and closer, and proportionally so. they're pressing, and kinda need to stop.

Still only an average pitch count thru 6 following a 28 pitch inning.

How is Wilson still in this game?

After his first inning (the 2nd) this game had 'rake the bullpen' written all over it.

I went to a handful of games in Montreal in the mid 90s, after the strike, when the fans fully bailed on that franchise. The joke was that there were foul balls laying around in the upper deck from previous games because it was desolate up there.

A bit disturbing in that, even with a win here, this only increases our innings-scored-in total from 3 to 5 over the past four games.

That's still 31 blanks over the past 36, actually 38 going back to the previous game.
