Thor has no regrets

Interesting story in the Post as Syndergaard makes his visit with the Phillies. You have to wonder. He got that extra million. And he went from a team that was out of it to a team fighting for a wild card. But he could have been part of something special with the Mets. Sounds like he thought he would have a better chance with a bounce back season away from the glare of New York. “That energy that can make New York so great and positive can also bite you in the butt a little bit, especially with what I'm going through now. I felt like if I was doing that playing here, everything would be highlighted,” said Syndergaard, traded to the Phillies right before the trade deadline on Aug. 2. “That was a big fear of mine.” Hi tweet after the no-hitter was lame, but I wish him well -- when he isn't facing the Mets. He had some ups and downs in his recovery this year that probably wouldn't have gone over well, though winning certainly would've made it easier. Also the Angels pitched him a good plan, $3 million more, and the Mets were still trying to find someone to work for them, ignored him. Ended up working out okay, but I wouldn't mind having Thor back next year.

Why should Thor have regrets? he got his money and still has his money. He even went from California to Pennsylvania mid season, which is probably a HUGE tax break as PA has a flat percentage tax without brackets.

There is likely to be a spot next year given all the current contracts running out, and I think getting Thor back another year removed from his surgery has a high likelihood of working out well.

his fastball velocity is still down, and isn't making a recovery right now, though interesting to see if it does after another rest period of an offseason.

Right, that is a bet I would like to make (with Cohen's money of course). It could be like that season Revis spent rehabbing in Tampa before coming back to the Jets!

Syndergaard can kiss my ass. I bet that the spotlight's glare wouldn't have been as bright if the Mets matched the LAA's $1M. He begged for the QO and took the money to go to a second-rate team and he failed and now he's on an inferior team in a City that wishes it was New York. I hope that the Mets light him up often.

Did he beg? Why would anybody beg for a qualifying offer? Is there a scenario where it helps a player's free agency marketability? Either way, the offer got the Mets McLean, Virginia's OWN Nick Morabito!

there was no one to beg. the Mets were busy begging people to work for them. And it was 3 million, iirc. The Mets took him for granted that no one would pay him more, and they lost. But hell, even if he'd pissed on the Seaver statue on his way out, if he could help the team next year, and he probably can!, bring him here.

He signed before the Mets even needed to offer him the QO. Now the Mets have an extra draft pick and five better starting pitchers. I can assure you the Mets have fewer regrets than Thor does.

They did offer him the QO. He signed during the acceptance period and then they acted all flustered when he signed elsewhere, which makes me think they weren't necessarily hoping to get the draft pick, which is unlikely to add even as much value just as 2022 Thor.

I looked at his career stats. He has not had an elite season since 2018. Pass. I'd rather bring back any of Bassitt, Walker or Carrasco over Thor for 2023 (not knowing which of those 3 are FAs)

I believe Bassitt, Walker and Carrasco have one more year of team control after 2022, Scherzer two more. Jake is a wild card, as he'll opt out and he'll be looking for Scherzer+ money. It's an elderly pitching rotation, though.

I would be happy with the same rotation next season, particularly with Megill and Peterson as back ups for redundancy/bullpen help. As for Syndergaard, there is no room for him on the Mets staff. At best, he would have to compete with Megill and Peterson for 6th man/bullpen/trade bait status. He is welcome to sign wherever he wishes, but I don't want it to be for a return to the Mets.

Bassitt and Walker are going to be free agents. Walker has a player option that he's expected to decline. Bassitt and the Mets have a mutual option for 2023, but it's not expected that Bassitt will take the option. Carrasco has a team option that will vest for 2023 if he reaches a certain number of innings. (I think it's around 175 for this year. He would need about 50 more.)

Right. Next year's rotation right now is Scherzer, Carrasco (I assume with all the other question marks the Mets will definitely pick this option up as they need to decide before the others are likely to agree to terms), Megill, Peterson, and Williams. Yikes. If ANY of deGrom/Bassitt/Walker don't come back, there is room for a Syndergaard type as the 5th guy with Megill and Peterson still having options or bullpen potential. While I'd hope the Mets bring back all 3, even with Cohen's wallet there could be other factors - an injury between now and then, a team wiling to give deGrom an absurd number of years more so than money, or simply a desire by one of them to be somewhere else.

I don't think there's any yikes there (even though Williams is also a free agent). The Mets are second in the league in starter ERA with many of those figures being a part of that. Beyond that, if they don't sign deGrom, Bassitt, or Walker (or Williams), plenty of options exist. I'm certainly not yikesing in August of the year before. Scherzer, Carrasco, and anybody is a good rotation.
