This could just as well go in the Baseball Forum

On Friday, Temple Beth David — a South Florida synagogue attended by the federal judge who authorized the search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence — was scheduled to host evening services on the beach. But a member of the synagogue on Thursday said that the Beach Shabbat event was canceled amid a deluge of antisemitic threats. The judge's involvement in the synagogue had been publicly identified, And who outed the federal judge?

That would be ex-Met and convicted felon Lenny Dykstra, in a Tuesday Twitter post, who followed up with antisemitic comments about Beth David's religious practices.

Re: This could just as well go in the Baseball Forum

How is this any different from the social media campaigns to track down conservative justices eating dinner at a restaurant and trying to harass them? its not.

A better question would be "how long can free speech survive" in a society with instant Social Media and lunatics on both sides of the aisle?

The difference is between peacefully protesting (a right) by interrupting someone's dinner without confronting them directly and actual threats. It may be a fine line, but there is a difference.

It's a HUGE line, not a fine one. One is literally a protected right of this country, and the other is insurrection.

Re: This could just as well go in the Baseball Forum

If you can't see the difference between "making some noise to disrupt a rich white asshole at a fancy restaurant" vs "a synagogue having to cancel services because of death threats," then holy shit. There's a CHASM of difference.

Yeah, you might want to re-think that comparison.

Unfortunately, too many people in this country believe armed confrontation is 'legitimate political discourse', and they're egged on by right-wing media, a former president and one of the two major political parties. 99% of the lunatics are on one side of the aisle.

Really, I don't think measuring the difference is worthwhile. We should probably just avoid the semblance of whataboutism to begin with.

The key takeaway is that Lenny Dykstra is a disgusting un-American scoundrel, and we should be suitably disgusted by our association with him, however tentative that association might be.

Social media is a sewer hole. It's why I stay away as much as I can. But in the real world, there only one party that's off the rails right now. The other party is trying to pass bills and make government work.

Bro, like 6 people already told you the difference, but I'll try, too.

Brett Kavanaugh doesn't live near me, but if he did, and he was having Red Lobster down the street from me and I knew about it, I would roll up in the parking lot and call him a goddamn liar to his face, even if it interrupted his fried krab and 4 beers (because he LIKES BEER). You might find that a bit uncivilized, but that's different than threatening violence and, my guy, you have to see the difference. If you don't, you really gotta try here, cmon.

There are no both sides to whatever this argument is. Sure, some more liberal folk also can be nasty evil people, but they're not lauded and promoted (or elected) for it. No one's celebrating them. There aren't some uniform "leftist" politics or whatever.

Depends on what's being said and how.

We all know that the internet emboldens those with the cloak of distance and anonymity (and it's not like internet threats weren't hurled at the Supremes also)

but that doesn't mean these in-person 'interruptions' of coffee and dessert are all polite or harmless.

p.s. and as I've said before, I find the whole idea of blaming the court to be a waste of energy on top of the half century the pro-choice side has already wasted

I'm certainly agreed on that. Demonizing the justices is deeply counterproductive. I hope no ex-Mets try to do that.

I hope no other ex-Mets try to do that.

But Lenny Dykstra is painting a target on a congregation, that may not even include the justice on the evening in question. His tweet also comes as part of a long record of sociopathic choices.

But please, don't try to kill any justices or lawmakers who you disagree with, and don't facilitate others to do so.

Yeah, I just ignored Dykstra as he speaks Stupid as a second language. Or, considering his butchering of English, maybe as a first.

To understand things more fully I'd have to dive into the Twitterverse which I have no intention of doing. He appears to be claiming that

there are religious Jews and, for lack of a better term, socio-economic types with the latter presumably being the ones behind socialism

and probably international cabals involving pedophilia and banking crimes. The two, in his mind, appear to be mutually exclusive clubs.

He claims to back the first but thinks the second is out to destroy the country.

Re: This could just as well go in the Baseball Forum

I aggressively cull my twitter feed. I unfollow or mute people that even provoke "ugh, that's a misguided or lame take" responses regularly. It's still the best place to go imo for live responses to things like sports and it's also wide-ranging enough that I can pop on and be exposed to all sorts of topics (That I've pre-selected, mostly) that I'm interested in. It's the "show me something interesting, somewhat curated to my likes" of the internet, in short text form. Obviously Tik Tok is better for that, but that also needs more curating, and it's only one thing at a time versus scrolling a whole time line and mentally reading what I want.

Re: This could just as well go in the Baseball Forum

I have a love-hate relationship with Twitter.

It changed my job when i was a journalist. Once we were able to tweet links to stories, we were able to grow from telling our story locally to connecting with an audience anywhere. Was pretty successful at it and was assigned training the other reporters. Some of them got it, others were convinced the Internet was a fad and people would always want a printed newspaper.

I'm on it every day for work even still. I keep some lists of people or organizations I need to follow. But I don't spend a ton of time reading it.

I think it gets abused. People mistake snark for substance. I think it is by far the most negative of the social media platforms. I don't understand the people with 60,000 tweets and 2,000 followers who think the world needs to hear their every thought.

The absolute worst, and laziest, news stories are "X event happens, Twitter explodes." Twitter explodes over everything, and anyone can cherry pick a handful of snarky posts that meet their objective to fill their story.

That said, it's most useful to me now when there is some breaking news expected, like the trade deadline or Hall of Fame announcement or something like that. I was refreshing over and over the night we thought the Scherzer deal was going to go down.

Good for Edgy for engaging and showing there is room for thoughtful and respectful discourse.

If you're a browser user and you haven't already, you may want to try Tweetdeck, which provides a more entertaining Twitter user experience. I was a rarely-if-ever user prior to discovering that interface.

Good call. Tweetdeck allows me to follow the accounts I really need to follow and let the others scroll by!

It's great also for following a hashtag. I have one that looks for either 'LGM' or 'Mets' and it's an entertaining feed to watch in real time during a Mets game.

That's kind of cool, I wonder why it's not more publicized. I like how you can

clear a column and just start from scratch. I don't care what I missed yesterday

or an hour ago.

What columns do you guys use? I have room for four on my laptop but only have

three right now - 'Home' 'Notifications' and 'Messages'

I use it for work, so I have one column for anything using my college's tag, one for all posts from colleges I follow, one for anything posted by anyone connected to my college -- which scares me, sometimes -- one for messages, and one for Mets stuff.

I'm pretty sure it was an official account, if nothing else, but whatdoIknow?
