RIP. I scoffed at the whole idea of the monarchy, but a British friend once noted to me that it really was useful to have a permanent, apolitical member of government who could provide non-binding advice to the politicians who walked through the revolving door to the Prime Minister's office.

I guess the British national anthem again becomes "God Save the King".

Re: Queen Elizabeth Has Died

I saw her when she was in San Francisco in the '80's. On a bus to work they announced that we all had to get off because the street her entourage would be going down blocked off the street the bus was on. I got off to walk the rest of the way (not too far) and watched as her limo moved past, her looking out the window and waving.

I checked to see if I had moved up in the line of succession. Somehow, I'm further away. :(

Congratulations to Princess Sophia Mapelli Mozzi, who now moves up to 10th in the royal line of succession, 10 days shy of her first birthday. I guess Charles also gets points for being the longest-serving royal heir.

Sometimes monarchs choose a new name when they're coronated.

Elizabeth's father's given name was Albert, but he chose to be crowned as George VI.

I'm kind of hoping that Charles chooses the name "Yennsy". (Or maybe Johneshwy?)

England/Great Britain's longest reigning monarch ever having passed her great-grandmother, Victoria, sometime in the last decade.. Prior to that the record might have belonged to Elizabeth I and now you're going back over four centuries.

WaPo States that he's King Charles III, will stay that way, and officially ascended the moment Mom went off to her regal reward. I wasn't sure if he had to wait for the coronation ceremony before being able to call himself "King".

I didn't see any word on whether Camilla is "Queen", "Queen Consort", or in honor of Diana's memory, "That Tart".

The accession to the throne is immediate. The coronation can take some time. Elizabeth II's coronation was a full two years after her father died.

Her reign coincided with 15 British prime ministers, 14 U.S. presidents, and seven popes. She appointed six archbishops of Canterbury.

It'd take a lot longer to figure out how much Britain's authority over their global territory has shrunk during her rule. The main absolute territorial surrender of her era remains Hong Kong. Ireland became a republic shortly before her ascension, but her reign has also been characterized by increased autonomy in the nations of the United Kingdom.

I count 27 (!!) wars and other military missions Britain led or participated in during her reign:
•
13 wins

  •
7 losses

  •
5 stalemates/inconclusive outcomes

  •
2 ongoing
  •
That was supposedly at the suggestion, in the days leading up to WWII, that Albert sounded too Germanic.

Of course the royal family WAS pretty Germanic in those days -- IIRC the book DREADNOUGHT, about Europe during WWI, opened with

the line that Queen Victoria was essentially 7/8th German -- and even moreso going back to all those other Georges in the Hanoverian

line which led up to the time of the American revolution, but I guess they figured it best not to advertise it so much.

The reigns of Charlies I & II didn't go so well so the bar is set kind of low.

#1's time ended when he got his head chopped off but I'm at least 85% confident that #3 can avoid that fate.

But the British people pay a pretty high price for all that, and by price I mean money. I mean, at some point I'd be asking exactly how many castles

they need while also questioning the sheer size of the bureaucracy needed to support not just the monarch but who knows how many relatives.

Other constitutional monarchies in Europe have managed to keep the symbolic royal head of state only at a vastly scaled down size.

This was writer Patrick Freyn writing in The Irish Times, a few years back, in reviewing some big Oprah Winfrey interview with the much-publicized royals Harry and Meghan. The broader view of the Irish people has been more complex, despite Elizabeth II being monarch during the entirety of The Troubles. She's typically carried a 50% approval rate or so in the Republic of Ireland, which usually outstripped the ratings for their own political leaders.

Monarchys are undoubtedly silly things, certainly to me, but as societies, we tend to get caught up and trapped in our governing systems, conflating the survival of the system with the survival of the society, so reform comes slowly and stubbornly, even when the need is glaringly obvious.

    Re: Queen Elizabeth Has Died

....the Queen will be buried in an English oak coffin featuring brass handles that was designed more than 30 years ago, and lined with lead.

The practice of burying royals in lead-lined coffins dates back hundreds of years.

As Royal Family members are buried inside a chamber, rather than directly in the ground, their coffins are lined with lead in order to slow decomposition. The lead seals the coffin and prevents moisture from getting in, preserving the body for up to a year.

The practice dates back to the Victorian era, when an airtight seal on a coffin was necessary to prevent the potent effects of decay in above-ground burials.

Members of the Royal Family and English nobility have used coffins lined with lead for at least four centuries.

According to Westminster Abbey records, Queen Elizabeth I and King Charles II were buried in lead-lined coffins, as were Princess Diana, Sir Winston Churchill and Sir Francis Drake.

The combination of lead and oak makes for a heavy coffin, so heavy in fact, it is reported that eight military pallbearers will be needed to lift Queen Elizabeth II's coffin.
