TWiB Notes - Sept 19 - 25

Frayed Knot
Sep 19 2022 05:34 PM

Seeing as how effective the Phils were(n't) this past weekend, we probably shouldn't expect too much from the Nats ... and as I type the Braves get a HR three batters in (Riley).

Most of the rest of the NL -- at least the ones most important to us -- is off today.

Phils host the Blue Jays starting tomorrow.

Cardinals (don't sleep on the Cards, folks) go to Sandy Eggo

Yanx host the continue Pirates' NTC tour after a day off today.

Listening to the Baseball Tonight podcast piling adoration in Aaron Judge, and they kept talking about the record, the record, the record, and how he was about to break it. And I'm thinking, the record is 73 and he's a long way away. Then at one point they clarified, the American League record, as Bonds, Sosa and McGwire all played in the NL. I don't know if there has ever been so much hype over a league record before.

Both Olney and Kurkjian are convinced Judge is headed to San Francisco next season.

I can understand why they're paying extra attention to the AL home run record - held by a Yankee, for 60 years, and unlike the subsequent single season HR records, not tainted by PEDs. Of course, he does play in an idiotically small ballpark, but, let's not split hairs here.

Re: TWiB Notes - Sept 19 - 25

Nats starter Patrick Corbin walks off the mound with an apparent back issue 12 pitches into his night. So if the Braves are going to lose it'll have to be against an all-bullpen crew.

Other stuff to keep track of tonight.

-- the races for 61 and for 700. Both are two away.

-- no NL team has matched or passed the 108 win mark since '86. The Dodgers can tie that mark by going 6 - 10 and obviously top it with anything better.

With Minnesota tumbling out of the ALC race (7 G out) the ChiSox have the only shot at the Guardians and those two start a series in the Windy City tonight. The Sox, 4 games out, pretty much need to sweep.

I don't think we need a "getting closer to the record" thread yet. If shit happens, it happens. We can keep it here.

Re: TWiB Notes - Sept 19 - 25

So Judge is on the verge of HR #61 (and beyond) just as the BoSox come in for a four game set starting tonight. So that's great if you're a YLDB with a ticket but not so much if you're a TV viewer or, say, Michael Kay or one of thei other announcers looking to be part of the fun.

Thursday is a FOX exclusive

Friday is an Apple+ game!!

Saturday will be done via local outlets

but then Sunday is property of ESPN

The Apple game really has fans pissed off but MLB has refused to budge off it as this is exactly the sort of 'national interest' game they want to be available everywhere (for a price Ugarte, for a price).

The Braves will post two results prior to our next one (barring rain) as they begin a four game eastern time zone series in Philadelphia starting tonight.

Braves lead the season series 9-6 so far, thanks largely to a recent three game sweep in Atlanta.

Lefties Max Fried and Ranger Suarez kick it off.

Zack Wheeler is off the IL but pitched (briefly) yesterday so won't appear in this one.

Be nice if Bryce Harper opts to show up for this series [1/12 w/5 Ks last week]

On ESPN Radio, Mike Greenberg was interviewing Michael Kay about the excitement surrounding Judge's quest for the record. Kay said he was still thinking about what call he would make. He sounded like he was considering several different ones. He's really going to be pissed if he can't use any of them because the call will become an instant re-play and last for a long time.

There has apparently been talks about adding Kay to the Apple TV+ 'team' for the Friday game but it's unclear even if those talks are real much less the likelihood of it happening.

One thing IS clear and that's that the game will NOT be simulcast on YES

Ugh. Bottom of the 1st, ATL has a runner on 2B, flyball to the track, Marsh holds his arms out b/c of the SUN and perhaps his lack of sunglasses. the ball falls in and a run scores. there were 2 outs so it would have ended the inning. And it's followed by a double so it's 2-0 ATL.
