IGT 10/02/22-NYM@ATL-Sunday Prayer Service

Chris Bassitt takes the mound for the Mets in the biggest game of the season against the Braves and Charlie Morton. Bassitt has two starts against ATL this season, going 1 and 1. He gave up 3 ER in 7 IP on 5/2 (L) and 1 ER in 6 IP on 7/13 (W). Morton, who just signed a big contract extension, is 1 and 2 against the Mets this season. He gave up 4 ER in 5/3 (L), 5 ER in 5 IP on 7/3 (L), and 0 ER in 6 2/3 IP on 8/16 (W).

https://www.mlb.com/gameday/mets-vs-braves/2022/10/02/661465#game_state=preview,lock_state=preview,game_tab=,game=661465

I would move Pete back to 4th in the lineup. If the Mets win they control their NL East fate as they win the season series against ATL so the Magic Number is 3 with 3 games left. It's on ESPN at 7:07 ET and not that weird 7:20 time from the last two nights. #LFGM

So this us essentially the biggest regular season game for any team this year and ESPN is fortunate enough to have it land in their lap.

So given that gift of being able to present this game to the entire country, what percentage of the game will they show with game shrunken via split screens or other interruptions?

40 - 60% ?

60 - 80% ?

Nope. They were getting 1 or 2 on the board but now the pitchers often get it together and we look back at it as a missed opportunity.

So following the Vogel single they had a walk + 8 hits which included 2 HRs and had made only six outs.

It's almost impossible to NOT have more than three runs by that point but not only did they have just three but given three more ABs to add to it and they STILL have just three out of all that.

I mean, I like having a lead and all but, man, they're leaving tons of shit out there.

I'll give ESPN this: not only have they put aside their split-screen/live-mic/let's-do-anything-but-show-the-game antics, but they've even shelved the constant crawl for the night.

Usually the crawl only disappears during games they care about while sports like baseball are treated as fodder for them to advertise what else is going on, particularly if it's

going to be on their network.

It's like, for one night only, they elevated MLB to major league status and are therefore sparing us the WNBA scores, college football injury reports, latest Tom/Giselle marriage

rumors, and all the other tripe that we specifically tuned in NOT to see.

It is mind boggling the scoring opportunities the Mets have wasted. They have 9 hits (2 HR) & 1 walk, that they somehow minimally converted into for 3 runs.

On the other hand, the Braves seem to capitalize on every chance to score. They have 3 hits (1 HR) & 3 walks that they converted into 4 runs.

Timely hitting appears to be a major problem. That and the bottom third of the line up just aren't producing.

I guess the positive is we know that Wednesday's game won't matter so they can line up... the same 3 pitchers that sucked this weekend for the WC series. Sigh.

Sometimes good players just don't play well. (See: 2014 Tigers. They started Scherzer, Verlander, and David Price in the division series and got swept). It can happen. I wouldn't bet on it happening next weekend.

There is hardly a team in all of baseball that wouldn't take deGrom, Scherzer, and Bassitt starting 3 games in a playoff series.

The problem with having to play the wild card round, besides having to face the Dodgers in the very next round should the Mets advance, is that because the WC round is a two out of three series, it's virtually guaranteed that neither deGrom nor Scherzer will get to pitch more than one game against the Dodgers.

The wild card series:

Oct 7: deGrom

Oct 8: Scherzer

Oct 9: Bassitt

The best of 5 NLDS could be:

Oct 11: Carrasco/Walker on 5+ days rest (Or Bassitt on 5+ if they sweep)

Oct 12: deGrom on 4 days rest

Oct 14: Scherzer on 5 days rest

Oct 15: Bassitt on 5 days rest (or Carrasco/Walker if they swept the wild card and Bassitt started game 1)

Oct 16: Carrasco/Walker/Bassitt on 4 days rest, or push deGrom on 3 days rest with the season on the line.

OR do they do this? if deGrom and/or Scherzer get lit up early then Showalter gets the wrath of the NY media. if they win, he is the genius who "went old school" - sometimes your 37 year old ace just needs to march out there the day after he threw 7 innings and throw another one to beat the evil MFY. But no matter how the Mets set up their rotation, should they advance, they'd be playing not only a well rested Dodgers team, but a team that will have its' rotation set up optimally. And the Dodgers' 3 and 4's pitched way, way better than the Mets 3 and 4's this season.

Re: IGT 10/02/22-NYM@ATL-Sunday Prayer Service

Since the Mets' fate is essentially sealed, they can reshuffle and go Scherzer 1 and deGrom 2 in the Wild Card Round.

That opens the possibility of Scherzer on short rest in game 5 of the DS. I see little possibility of deGrom going short rest in the DS.

Funny thing is I strongly support this playoff setup. I've been saying for years that the team with the best W-L record should get all sorts of advantages like a BYE in the first round, and getting to face the WC card team off a tough series, at home, etc.

Now it's not so funny.

It didn't have to be this way as MLB proposed 7 teams per league for the playoffs but the MLBPA agreed on 6. If the MLB proposal had passed we wouldn't have THIS feeling as the weekend would have been for the NL East title which only would have meant the 2d seed (2 v 7) instead of the 3d seed (3 v 6, with LAD getting the only bye). (I might have posted this lament before, I don't remember.)

However you structure the playoffs you are going to make regular season series more or less meaningful and whether that is good or bad for a given team will vary over time.

I think the current system is fine. I'd prefer going back to East/West with no Central in each league and then implementing the current system with 2 division winners and 4 wild cards. winning ANY division then has equal merit and the top 2 wild card spots also hold greater merit in hosting the 1st round.

I like that idea. Maybe they'll do that after the next expansion, if the number of teams becomes divisible by four. As it stands now, you'd have two divisions with eight teams and two with seven. That would complicate the schedule unless they went with something fully balanced.
