Mike Clevinger doesn't last 3 IPs as LAD leads 4 - 0 in the 4th

Padres up 2 games to 1 with a chance to clinch tonight. Perhaps the Padres are actually a good team and losing to them was not a rage-inducing humiliation or a sign that the Mets "gave up" that some Mets fans have insisted upon.

Bye bye Dodgers. Happy to see all the teams I hate most having their seasons end. Just waiting for the Guardians to salt away the MFYs now.

If you pass by a Dunkin Donuts in Brooklyn, you might hear the Munchkins singing:

DING DONG

THE BI**H IS DEAD

I am. And I'm not a Munchkin.

I wouldn't have thought or felt any of that stuff even if it was the Nats or Marlins that took two of three from the Mets. It was two out of three games, that's all it was. (Oooooooh. But it happened in the playoffs. The plaaaaaaaaaaaayoffs.)

I hate Philly more than the Dodgers. MLB is having nightmares of the San Diego-Cleveland World Series ratings though

There is an element of randomness to the playoffs, by design. Anybody can have a good week, or a bad one. I felt the National League had four very good teams and two pretty good ones, and guess which two are still playing? I felt this year's Braves team was demonstrably better than last year's team. You can argue that having multiple rounds levelizes the playing field against consistently elite teams like the Dodgers -- and there's more than enough evidence at this point that it does. But you're still better off making the playoffs consistently if the goal is to come away with a title or two.

That goes without saying. The more playoff appearances, the more chances a team has. It's strictly a numbers game. It's probability and the odds bear out only with large samples, which the playoff format and the time constraints that come with the playoffs can't possibly provide.

I'm certain that if after the 162 game regular season, every single team qualified for the playoffs, bad or sub .500 teams would capture the championship way more often than most people could ever imagine. At least in baseball, anyways.

Re: Padres v Dodgers

So it's not like LAD mgr Dave Roberts is a stranger to being questioned about his quick starter hooks in the post-season.

Yesterday's game (which I didn't see) just adds to the pile as Tyler Anderson -- 15 - 5 / 2.57 during the season -- is pulled after 5 innings and a (somewhat high) 86 pitches while

pitching a 2-hit shutout. This meant that the Dodgers pen, in this case: Chris Martin, Tommy Kahnle, Yency Almonte, Alwx Versia, and Evan Phillips, had to see if they could protect

their 2-run (later 3) lead for 4 innings. Only Phillips pitched a clean inning and that was in the 9th inning after the dam had already burst. Kahnle, Almonte & Vesia combined to

record 3 outs while allowing 5 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks.

Maybe those relievers are better than I know but I'd have a huge problem if my manager followed a similar strategy in an elimination game.

Re: Padres v Dodgers

They all had very good seasons, but all of them except Martin were pitching their third game of the series, and Phillips led the bunch with a whopping 63 IP this year (none of the others broke 60). The thought that relief pitchers might run out of gas too never seems to factor into the equation.
