New SI Article, 09-16-22

This is a worthwhile article on the SI website.

https://www.si.com/mlb/2022/09/16/new-mets-daily-cover

I could live without the typical recitation of #LOLMets stuff but I learned a few things. We see that Cohen listens and doesn't hesitate to spend what to him is not a lot of money (but is money that the Wilpons wouldn't spend) to improve the team.

correcting an underpayment (admidst a labor movement where EVERYONE is realizing they're underpaid and also inflation) is not quite "not hesitating to spend to improve" He brought employees up to scale. great. Double that and take the very best people available and get them here. You went to flex financial might to your advantage, that's how you do it.

[BLOCKQUOTE]Most surprising of all, they have been . . . a normal baseball team. There have been no ridiculous stories sucking the oxygen out of the room for weeks at a time. [/BLOCKQUOTE]

this is LOLMets nonsense. Look in a mirror dude. 95% of those articles were media-driven. And universally, across sports, winnings solves like 95% of those issues. But You'd have to start with this season even, not this year or Spring Training, to avoid "ridiculous stories'. And even that is ignoring the small but budding chance the Mets have to leave a half dozen guys home to play World Series games in Toronto. That's a rehash of a Spring Training story, one in which NYC's ___ mayor had to drop the vaccine mandate so the Mets could fully field their team. (oh, btw, did a certain owner donate to that guy's campaign? hmm... Or are we chalking this up to 'financial might' even though it's evil?) This is mere weeks/months after a on-going "no one wants to work for the Mets!" storyline in the offseason, and IT IGNORES WHO BILLY EPPLER is, ignores that one of the Mets former managers and current broadcaster LEAKED PRIVATE AND PERSONAL MEDICAL information about Matt Harvey. To say nothing of the shenanigans that went on last year.

[BLOCKQUOTE]Since Wilpon took control of the team in 1987, the club has tweeted more photos of dildos (1) than it has won titles (0).[/BLOCKQUOTE]

normalize sex work and sex toys please. STFU with this. This is just an unprofessional dig. Are you writing a journalistic post or making fun of the Mets? make up your mind. The second is fine if you want, but you can't be upset if no one takes you seriously then.

[BLOCKQUOTE]In '13 the team asked older-women dating site Cougar Life for help promoting third baseman David Wright's All-Star Game campaign before rescinding the request. [/BLOCKQUOTE]

again, normally sex work (this isn't even sex work, it's just dating) please. I thought the story here was that they reached out and Wright declined. There was some other tie in that I can't remember now. Regardless, this is not embarrassing. Weird how he leaves out the media pressuring Mike Piazza into having a press conference to state he's not gay..hmmm...

[BLOCKQUOTE]Four months later players fled the Fenway Park visitors dugout midgame to escape a rat.[/BLOCKQUOTE]

This is a uniquely Mets catastrophe? This was the anecdote you picked? being mildly scared of a rat in Boston?

Then this guy does finally contradict all his previous points by pointing out some of Cohen's issues, though leaving out some details for sure.

But ahah, now, finally we get to the actually point of the article! It's a Buck praise piece! Surprise!

A lot of the issues Buck "fixed" were related to Rojas, and also to losing, but I've come around on him. I appreciate some of the anecdotes here. Taking down all the stupid inspirational quotes. That's neat, letting Alonso have a pool table.

I definitely appreciate some more info on the Trajekt machine. Though I think he under-states how many other teams have one. But the media previously didn't even bother looking up which company made the machine, just aggregated the press release, so I appreciate learning about how it's being used.

More tech is good, and more employees too (Though they were trending that way already on both accounts). It's also much easier to build up a company AFTER a pandemic you didn't manage it through. I'm not convinced by any of this that they're hiring the _right/best_ employees, but I guess there were enough nuggets in this article to make it worth reading.

That "no ridiculous stories" angle is nonsense.

Re: New SI Article, 09-16-22

like, even if the mets are now an appropriately functioning, averagely-run team, that would be a newsworthy accomplishment and something worth celebrating. it seems as if they're better than that, and on their way to more. i'm cool with it.

making wholesale changes in an organizational culture in the span of two years is remarkable. i mean, you can turn an organization into shit in less time if you really put your mind to it. but to turn the mets from, lets be honest, an absolute laughing stock, into what sounds like a bit of a model organization, that's impressive.

Re: New SI Article, 09-16-22

Here's two things you'll never read, except maybe now, as you are currently reading them.

[list]

  • [*]"The Mets may be playing .385 baseball, but they've done nothing to embarrass themselves as a team and an organization. The decency and impressive, forward-thinking bearing with which they've conducted themselves is a model for any organization. Society would be well served if we all tried to be more Metly in our manner and decision making."

  • [*]As the Mets' winning streak extends their first-place lead, it's worth noting how obviously laughable and disgraceful this organization is, and that can't be ignored just because they're winning. Ridiculous-but-true accounts of their dysfunctional mess of an organization have poured out of their press corps as frequently as winning boxscores."
  • [/list]

Innocuous accounts, such as "GM breaks down on highway, gets lift from passing fan," are surefire traits of greatness or shittiness, depending on the context into which they fall.

In short, yes, there have been "ridiculous stories" but they don't get as much legs, or get filtered through the same lens, when they don't feed the easier narrative.

There were no anonymous quotes ("one Met said...") in the article which is a big change for the franchise.
