I called it! I mean, I sort of predicted it and I still don't believe it. Bad news for the Braves, I think. Still, I kind of wish this was kept on the down-low until shortly before game-time.

It's wild that he wasn't up here a month, two months ago. But sure. The guy plays out the string for AAA, and then gets thrust headfirst into a do or die division series with 6 games left. And then there's an argument to be made that he should be the #1 catcher in the playoffs. Feels like bad process to me.

8 always makes me think catcher, maybe because an 8 looks like a guy squatting behind home plate. Or a snowman. But 8 is probably in permanent limbo.

I'd like to see him in a one-digit number. The only ones currently available are 5, 7, and 8. As noted, 8 seems to be in limbo and I'm pretty sure nobody will ever wear 5 again. Maybe they can switch him to 9 next year if Nimmo leaves. If it was up to me, I think I'd give him 7. Or maybe 35. I don't know! I'm glad I don't have to make these important decisions.

Eight is also associated with catchers because when numbers were originally linked to positions in the batting order, the catcher typically batted eighth. I think he'll get a September number (probably 78 or 88), before moving to something more permanently (yes, eight would be greight) next year. Also, depending on how he does over the next week, a September number might be what he chooses to be his permanent number. He's swaggery enough that he seems like he'd like something quirky as part of his brand.

My preference would be to give Alvarez number 8. Maybe he can wear it for 15 years and they can retire it for him, and the Gary Carter fans can pretend that it was done for Gary. They can even invite Carter's grandchildren to the ceremony.

The writer probably, as a kid in little league uniform, had his picture taken with Carter. Of course, he probably doesn't realize that Gary tried to get his picture taken with anybody and everybody.

This will be the first time the Mets have ever had two guys named "Francisco" in the starting lineup. It's even the first time they've had two Franciscos on the roster at the same time. He'll only be the fourth Met with that name, following Estrada (who is often listed as "Frank"), Rodriguez, and Lindor.

They had an article in there saying Dom Smith's reverse splits make him a great potential DH platoon partner for Vogey, and although that's exactly my position, the article was so bad that it made me rethink it.
