Playoff Pain

David Robertson off the Phillies roster after getting hurt celebrating Bryce Harper's homerun.

Astros pitcher Phil Maton is also out after busting a finger on his pitching hand, punching a locker in distress after allowing a hit to his brother, Phillies infielder Nick Maton.

Apparently, all Phillies have brothers on other teams — also known as Goeddel's Law.

Some names are extremely Phillie. The most Phillie of them have a “y” within them if not at their beginning or end.

I've noted earlier that I associated the Phils with Germanic names. Schmidt, Schu, Schwarber, Stott, Boehm, Eisenreich, Vierling, Lieber, Kruk, Vukovich (x2), Chuck Klein, Curt Schilling.

You're right about Ys, though — particularly partially extraneous ones. Bryce Harper, please step forward.

No wonder they're big in King of Prussia.

I also associate the Phils with mullets. Lots and lots of mullets.

It's surprising that Rod Beck never played with the Phillies considering his massive mullet and Germanic surname. Maybe if he was "Ryod" Beck?

Good point. I close my eyes and I can see him in a Phillies uniform that he never actually wore.

He did, but you can't see him behind Rhys Hoskins.

I also — and this is mostly a latter-day thing — tend to associate the Phils with having players who have a brother on another team.

'Rosenthal: Too soon to cite new format as reason for MLB postseason upsets" (From The Athletic).

Good grief. Here we go with the overreactions and the failure to understand the randomness of a short baseball series and the enormous influence of luck in baseball. If they dont want non-elite teams to advance in baseball playoffs, then those teams shouldn't be in the playoffs in the first place.

What do they think? That the best teams get magical powers in the playoffs and that the team with the better record is suppose to win every playoff game just by wanting to win?

I dont get why they even have these dialogues at this point in time. If I flipped a coin twice and it came up heads both times, my first instinct wouldn't be to think that the coin was rigged to come up heads more often than not.

My playoff pain doesn't hurt so much after LA lost.

The 101-win Mets lose and it's "#LOLMets" but ATL and LAD lose and "the system might be flawed!"

Lol.

This is why I hate baseball playoffs. Because the commentary and most everything else surrounding it is moronic. Now what? They want the second and third place teams to participate --- but not to win any series? Is that it?

Re: Playoff Pain

I think MLB had proposed that the division champs be provided with a 'ghost win', meaning that the Braves would have only had to win one game to take the series but the Phillies would have needed two. But the union rejected the idea.

Well here's how it works Kenny boy:

With three WC teams and two playing each other, you guarantee that one will advance (same as previous format) only now the presence of a 3rd WC team means they might also advance (30% chance? 40% ? ... who knows?) but their inclusion increases the odds that more than one non-winner will still be in the mix going forward.

And if there are two than the odds that at least one of them will win the succeeding round is jacked up also, no?

All that advancing DID happen in the NL while the AL is down to just division winners at this point.

Conclusion Drawn? Shit Happens. Rinse, Lather, Repeat.

It was the other way around. The players wanted that. It was something considered when MLB was pushing a 14-team playoff structure.

Re: Playoff Pain

All 12 teams in the playoffs are good teams (some better than others), but in a short series it is often a matter of which team gets hot and is playing their best at that particular time. There is a lot of randomness or luck (as batmags has noted) that comes into play in a short series. The Dodgers practically owned the Padres in head to head match ups this season (14-5), but got beat 3 games to 1 in the playoffs. The Padres are playing their best at the right time and subsequently outplayed the Dodgers (and the Mets) when it mattered most.

The Guardians are attempting to do the same thing against the Yankees after New York won the regular season series (5-1) by a cumulative score of 38-14.

Oh yeah, Go Guardians!

I feel like I'm the only one beating this drum, but MLB needs the equivalent of an MLS Supporters Shield now, a big shiny piece of metal given to the team with the best regular season record. At some point, maybe winning the regular season will hold more significance than the tournament at the end.

The marathon and the sprint are different types of races. The Olympics awards medals for both. Why shouldn't there be awards for winners of both the regular season and world series?

Makes sense.
