Let's talk about Jose Abreu

Some teams are still playing, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the Hot Stove season.

Mets rumors: Is Jose Abreu a fit for uncertain DH role?

Re: Let's talk about Jose Abreu

His age and declining production make me wary of him. I'm not sure what his incremental value would be over Venitos. Of course, he could turnout to be another DH who stays consistent through 35-40 and this was a blip.

But I'd prefer not to have to find out.

A '35' year old from Cuba who'll be '36' by spring training? Um, no. There'll be plenty of candidates for the DH job next year.

Re: Let's talk about Jose Abreu

abreu is interesting, that's for sure. his average and obp are outstanding. power is still pretty good, with 40 doubles. they're just not going over fences. i wouldn't want to invest too much in him, especially long term, but if we wanted a stable dh bat, we could do worse.

fwiw, fangraphs says abreu's 2022 was worth $30M, so maybe we're undervaluing him a tad. i would be ecstatic to get close to that production from baty/vientos!

that said, i would very much prefer to see the mets try to get the production out of the young'uns, and use whatever dollars abreu might command to retain a brandon nimmo.

also, while i could see chicago wanting to move on from abreu, i also would expect them to extend him the QO, which would of course sour me further.

I read that the QO for next year will be $19.5 million. I'm not sure if he would be worth more than that to get him.
