David Ortiz says the Mets should give him $50 million per year for the next five or six years.

(David Ortiz doesn't have any decision-making role with the Mets, does he?)

Two things I feel leery about chasing are power and size. Fairly or unfairly, I associate both with rapid declines.

Not seeing it, Papi. I think the Yanx will break the bank to bring him back.

Agree. But I'd be happy to drive up that price.

As I'm sure they will be with deGrom.

These aren't those Yankees. My money is on him going some place else.

You can't expect a duplicate of this season. But the Mets can use another power bat and, well, he has one. I'd start at 6 and 250.

I feel the same about Judge that I do about deGrom….don't put all your spending $$$ in one guy

my worry is that Judge is the big splash showy acquisition that Cohen seemingly loves.

And that is based on…what exactly? That the Mets acquired and then signed Lindor?

Javy Baez, Cohen's public comments since he's taken over, etc. read the word _seemingly_ there. That's the impression I get of him. Steinbrenneresque.

I haven't seen anything linking Cohen to indiscriminate manager firings, calling players by derogatory names, publicly-decried meddling with organizational operations, or public complaints about the team's win-loss record. That's what comes to mind first about a “Steinbrenneresque” owner.

Now, if by “Steinbrenneresque” you meant “willing to spend lots of money in the FA market,” I too have that impression of Cohen.

Keeping this on topic: it wouldn't shock me if Cohen wants to offer the big bucks, and I see little downside. There can hardly be any dispute that he would massively improve the team in the short term.

As for the long term, we have only a limited view, but things go sour, we did see with Cano that ownership understands a sunk cost.

Look at it this way: You sign him and he goes to Mediocresville, so what do you do? You make him into a DH and worst case scenario, he's a lot better at DH than what you had in 2022.

I'm not sure enough Yankee fans appreciate that the current generation of Steinbrenners have yet to act in a Steinbrenneresque fashion.

You can probably upgrade third base and catcher (certainly catcher) without spending any money. Cano comes off the books in a year. Canha and Escobar could be moved if needed, and McCann, well, OK that's probably a sunk cost. But there's room for this and for bringing back Nimmo, before we even look at pitching.
