Not who you think will win but who do you WANT to win? You gotta pick, you can't say "F 'em both".

Astros: CON: They cheated in 2017 et al.

Houston is in Texas.

Ted Cruz is a fan.

PRO: They beat the Yankees.

They aren't the Phillies.

They have one ex-Met, even if you've forgotten about Rafael Montero.

Dusty Baker has never won a World Series (see the next post)

Phillies: CON: We hate them. They hate us more.

Do we really want to hear "the Mets play the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies"? (Hearing "the Mets play the National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies" will be tough enough.)

PRO: They aren't the Astros.

They beat Atlanta.

NL East solidarity!

"Abbott Elementary" is a good show.

Bryce Harper winning a Series will piss off Nationals fans.

They have two ex-Mets, Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard. Make it three: I forgot about Brad Hand.

The 6th seed in the NL playoffs, the last team to make it into the playoffs, shouldn't win the World Series.

This story makes an Astros' victory more than palatable.

Phillies. So I can read and watch moronic World Series takes about how the Astros choked and lack character all because they lost the WS despite having the better regular season record. All this after having read and watched moronic playoff takes all month long about how the teams with the better records lost to teams with lesser records. But we've been through this already.

It really is absurd that a third-place team, one that finished 14 games out of first place, is in the World Series.

Re: World Series 2022--Pick A Side

this is a tough one...but out of all the teams that were left once the Mets/Guardians were eliminated (It was my "ideal" matchup), I can live with the Phils vs Astros...

The way that I look at it: disappointed that the Mets and Guardians were eliminated; but at least the smug Braves; over-budget/over-worshipped Yanks/Dodgers; and annoying Cards/Pads were also sent packing (Pads: Mets always seem to struggle vs them, plus their uniforms are uglier than shit, every single one of them; Cards: need I say more?)...

the 'stros got caught, but it's not like anyone other than Yankees/Braves/Dodgers fans don't believe that they have been equally as guilty of doing things that were morally corrupt in building "winners"...at least the Astros don't choke vs the Yankees like most other AL teams do...

the "biggest losers in sports history"? so many reasons to hate the Philthy phillies...but at the same time, are any of the current players/management to blame for my phillies angst?

if you think about it, they have a bit of Mets in them:

Wheeler/Syndergard: coulda/shoulda be doing this for the Mets;

the 2022 Phillies like the 1973 Mets were under-achieving until something snapped mid-season;

in the case of the Mets, it was Tug McGraw "mocking" M Donald Grant. https://newyorkmets.medium.com/ya-gotta-believe-5c7ad4e3683d

in the case of the Philiies, it was the firing of Joe Girardi. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/bryce-harper-appears-to-take-shot-at-joe-girardi-after-phillies-sweep-first-series-since-firing-manager/

As of October 1, 2022, the team has played 21,203 games, winning 10,019 games and losing 11,184.[9]

the Phillies are a team historically associated with futility, being the first American sports franchise to amass over 10,000 losses; the team holds the world record for most ever losses by a single team in all of professional sports.[10]

If we go back to the springtime and the who-do-we-fear threads I think I'd have said Philly because they really do have a nice lineup. Then we played them only to discover they cut too many corners and looked like a wilpon era Mets squad.

Just the damage they've done to Girardi's reputation as a leader of men is impressive and I have a lot of friends-- including Josh who passed away suddenly this summer and would have been on cloud 9-- who love the Phils so I'm going with them. Go Phillies. I said it.

It's one of those things that there is such a monopoly on that things that taste different (and maybe better) just taste wrong because we're so used to the one thing. But the other (real) cream cheeses are just fine, sometimes maybe even better? (store brand nonsense aside)

Cheese steaks also aren't better in Philadelphia than anywhere else.

Re: World Series 2022--Pick A Side

When I've got no skin in the game (no NYM to root for, no NYY to root against) I often won't pick a side at first, sometimes to the point of rooting for whichever side is down just to get a longer series out if it. But then at some point I'll unconsciously find myself pulling for one side or the other before I realize I'm even doing so.

This series feels like it might be one of those, one where I might not have a favorite until game 5 or 6.

It just occurred to me that this this likely is the first HOU/PHI post-season match-up since the 1980 NLCS, a wild affair that saw Philly win 3 - 2 (en route to their first ever WS title) where four of the five games (#'s 2, 3, 4, & 5) went extra innings.

Re: World Series 2022--Pick A Side

Game 1, in Philly: Phils 3 - Astros 1

- Ken Forsch goes (all) 8 innings for Houston allowing 3 runs on 8 hits

- Carlton scatters 7 hits over 7 capped by Tug's 2 innings of 0-hit/1-BB 8th & 9th

- Luzinski's 2R 6th inning HR and Greg Gross's 7th inning single provide the runs

Game 2: Astros 7 - Phils 4, 10 innings

Nolan Ryan & Dick Ruthven

- Tied 2-2 after 7, teams each score single runs in the 8th

- Astros hit up relievers Ron Reed & Kevin Saucier for four in top 10

- Phils counter with 1 in the bottom half but Schmidt flies out as the tying run to end it

Game 3: Astros 1 - Phils 0 (11)

- Joe Niekro goes 10 and Dave Smith gets the 11th

- Larry Christensen and four relievers pitch for Philly but this time Tug is on

the short end giving up a leadoff triple to Joe Morgan then, following two IWs,

(Jose Cruz & Art Howe) a GW Sac Fly to Denny Walling

Game 4: Phils 5 - Asttos 3 (10)

- Steve Carlton and five relievers hold the Astros to 5 hits although walk Nine!!

- Vern Ruhle, Dave Smith & Joe Sambito allow 13 hits but back to back 10th inning doubles by

Luzinski and Manny Trillo give Philly their margin after Tug mows 'em down 1-2-3 in bottom 10

Game 5: Philly 8 - Astros 7 (10)

- After scoring 3 in the top of the 8th to break a 2-2 tie, perhaps allowing Nolan to come out for the 8th on three days rest

was pushing it as Houston starts the frame 1B, 1B, 1B, BB (although two were IF hits) then tack on four more via an RBI GO,

a Del Unser single, and 2-RBI Manny Trillo triple.

- Houston then battles back with two of McGraw in the 8th

- But Garry Maddox's 2-out RBI single in top 10 proves to be the series clincher as Dick Ruthven retires the Astros in order in the 9th & 10

Re: World Series 2022--Pick A Side

The 1980 NL playoffs was the first thing I thought of when this Phils/Astros WS came to be and it was one of the greatest playoff series I ever saw. Back then, I watched the playoffs because a second place team, let alone a third place team had no chance of playing in the playoffs.

And those crazy tequila sunrise jerseys on National TV!

[FIMG=555]https://sabr.org/sites/default/files/1980Astros.PNG[/FIMG]

The Astros played that series without baseball's best pitcher, J.R. Richard, who missed the second half of that season after he suffered a stroke. From 1976 to 1980, Richard was one of the premier pitchers in the majors, leading the National League twice in strikeouts, once in earned run average, and three times in hits allowed per nine innings. "When asked in 2012 who was the "toughest pitcher to get a hit off" during his career, Dale Murphy answered "Anybody that played in the late 70's or early 80's will probably give you the same answer: JR Richard."

J.R Richard and Nolan Ryan. That was some duo for the brief time it lasted.

Maldonado was using an illegal bat in Game 1:

https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/phillies/astros-martin-maldonado-used-illegal-bat-world-series-vs-phillies

"Martin Maldonado is using a different bat today here in Game 2. He found out from MLB today that the bat he used last night was not a legal bat. It was a model he obtained from Albert Pujols, and he used it because he thought it was very similar in size and weight to his own model. The barrel, he said, was slightly bigger. He also thought it was a way to honor the baseball legend, of course retiring with the close of the season, but here's the catch to it, guys: in 2010, Major League Baseball changed the bat specifications and that bat that Pujols modeled was no longer, except if you were playing prior to 2010 it was grandfathered. So Albert Pujols could use that bat but Maldonado, who began his major league career in 2011, was not legally able to use that bat."

The way he swings the bat, gornischt helfen*. But still ...

I have a social media friend and have no idea how I know him, but he's somehow close to Carl Erskine. Close enough that he called Oisk up after Justin Verlander gave up five runs in Game One to let him know that he's no longer the holder of the All-Time worst World Series ERA with over 30 innings pitched. Turns out that Erskine already knew and despite being almost 94, was happy to get the monkey off his back.

When one of the Phills hit a homer, when he came back to the dugout I noticed he called other players over. He let them in on the "tell".

Todd Frazier, now an analyst for ESPN showed what it was this morning.

On an off speed pitch, he was holding his glove straight up and close to his face. With a fastball the glove was at an angle, and more away from his face. (or the other way around, I forgot)

I enjoy the idea of those fans paying so much money to watch their team not get any hits in a WS game. Maybe some of those same folks were at the game earlier this year where we did the same thing to them.

Amazingly, the same starter and closer also were part of a combined no hitter against the MFYs this summer.

Maybe the best part was how LOUD that place was at the start of the game, going nuts with each out and even with each strike in the top of the 1st and Nola mowed 'em down 1-2-3

At the end ... not so much, and Nola didn't even survive the 4th.

Good for the Phillies to take a nut punch 👊. Now they're demoralized and cannot win at home. I know I said I was rooting for them because I have Philly friends but I also have Philly enemies so I'm good either way.

The danger caused by the backfired strategy (they got neither the out nor prevented the run).

But following that RBI Single, the Astros haven't hit a fair ball since. [K+CS, K ... K, Foul Out, K,]

Probably the last inning for Verlander (5th).

He keeps getting quick outs early in innings but then needs a ton of high-stress pitches to get the 3rd out.

Result = 95 pitches to get thru the 5th

Stunning stat learned from tonight's game:

J. T. Realmuto caught 230 more innings this year than any other catcher. That's more than 25 games' worth.

133 games started behind the plate plus 3 at 1B and just 3 more at DH.

Now, granted, that's not Randy Hundley territory (160 games started in the no-DH/no-night games era at Wrigley Field) but it's this generation's version of it.

Sadly, lots of baseball things used to be, like players knowing how to bunt and starters pitching more than seven innings.

Unis don't appear very high on my list.

I don't agree with the idea that modern starting pitchers are somehow inferior to starters of past eras because modern pitchers don't pitch nearly as many innings in a season.

Times change. Today's athletes, not just in baseball, but in every sport, are far superior to their predecessors. And this is very easy to prove. Just check out track and field records and weightlifting records and in fact, most all Olympian records. They all fall. Most of those records don't last that long. And its easy to compare athletes of different eras when measuring those records because a mile is a mile is the same mile whether it's a 2022 mile or a 1936 mile. Same with weights. A pound is the same pound that weighs the same no matter the year.

Fifty years ago, every team had a Bud Harrelson or a Roger Metzger or a Ray Oyler in their lineup and several weak or struggling hitters that were hardly HR threats. Every team, including the very best. So pitchers could pace themselves. Today's pitchers have to go all out on every batter, on every pitch. Because today's hitters, and all modern athletes in general, are far superior to the athletes of Steve Carlton and Jim Palmer's era. And today's strategy has advanced to the point where it's now understood that it's more efficient for pitchers to go all out on every batter and yield to a reliever earlier -- a reliever who, in turn, could go all out as well.

Nolan Ryan was a freak of an outlier in his day. But today, there are at least two dozen pitchers who could throw 100 MPH pitches.

Personally, I doubt that Tom Seaver or Bob Gibson would be able to regularly pitch close to 300 innings a season in today's game if they were alive today and in their pitching primes.

'Astros' splashed across their bright orange shirts (with gray pants at least). So one can see where this sort of thing can cause agita among those members of the tradition police.

Giants up 5 - 0, top 7th. Russ Ortiz on the mound

-- Garrett Anderson - GO

-- Troy Glaus - 1B

-- Brad Fullmer - 1B

** pitching change ... Dusty famously hands the game ball to Ortiz as he leaves the mound. Felix Rodriguez comes in.

-- Scott Spezio - 3R HR

- Orlando Palmiero - K

** pitching change, Scott Eyre in

-- Adam Kennedy - 1B

** pitching change - Tim Worrell in

-- David Eckstein - FO

[5 - 3 Giants]

Bottom 8

-- Darrin Erstad - Solo HR [5 - 4 SF]

-- Tim Salmon - 1B

** pitching change - Robb Nen in

-- Troy Glaus - 2 RBI 2B [6 - 5 LAA]

-- Brad Fullmer - K

-- Scott Spezio - IW

-- Jose Molina - Sac Bunt

-- Adam Kennedy K

Re: World Series 2022--Pick A Side

Everyone has been lamenting the transition of the game to "Starters go 5, bring in the bullpen and wait for someone to hit a home run".

But this series has shown that the hit and run, stolen base and defense are also exciting parts of winning baseball. And fundamentals can be exciting, too.

And the team that did those things won.

There IS a future for the game as we knew it.
