This is kinda late in the offseason, because Mets Roster Central's 2022 motto is Cleaner Posting Through Database Management, and while we are indeed building a database-driven enterprise, we have found that our self-taught database skills are 20 years out of date and we need to do some catching up.

Mets Roster Central does not know where the market is going to land this offseason, but it seems to us that $19 million is still a lot of lettuce. Our guess is that Bassitt is looking for more security and will get multiple years (three? three and an option?) but at a lower annual salary. YOUR Projected 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

The Mets now not only have enough pitchers active on their roster to field a complete pitching staff, with the addition of Saucedo and the re-signing of Diaz, their roster of pitchers under contract is maybe (probably?) better than their roster of 2022 pitchers currently looking for work. And so the offseason chair-shuffling, if only ephemerally, opens up the ghost of a spot for Dom Smith. Yeah, that'll likely soon change with one transaction or another, including his possible non-tendering, but for now, he's at back at the head of the line, and that's a happy thought. Terrance Gore may not be seen in blue and orange again (and, as far as his thumbnail up there says, he never has been), but if this is his legacy, as a designated pinch-runner brought in late to contribute as needed during a playoff drive, and then cast off, he sure outdid Billy Hamilton and Eric Young, Jr. II in that role. Bryce Montes de Oca fans (Team MdO!) can sleep soundly, knowing that, after close examination by MRC staff of his record versus that of newcomer Stephen Ridings, the latter does not displace Bryce in 2023 projections. The Mets' purging of Dom Smith comes at a time when their roster is observably short on bats. He was never an outfielder, but now his absence returns McNeil to the outfield and brings Vientos into the opening day picture. Maybe that's all for the best, but it's unlikely they're planning it that way. The similar and simultaneous sending forth of Sean Reid-Foley may seem less impactful, but I hope the team realizes that if and when he signs elsewhere, the organization's entire Guamanian history goes with him. José, one of many José Rodríguezes you will find on a trip around baseball, had some success in a couple of short stints with the Angels a few years back, but spent 2022 as an indifferently effective swingman for Syracuse. His loss shouldn't mean much, but one might suspect that starting pitchers will soon spike in demand. Transactions, 11/28/2022
Danny Barnes probably isn't going to be the bullpen coach, but being on a big league staff without an official assignment makes him as good a placeholder as any. Mets roster Central wonders if and when Dave Racienello becomes the bullpen coach. He's been the bullpen catcher since he was younger than all the players, and now he's older than them all, so clearly bullpen catcher has a lot more job security than bullpen coach, if less seniority and status. Transactions, 12/2/2022
I think we can conclude that tomorrow's back page will have little to say about Jimmy Yacabonis. One of the harshest things about losing an ace (and deGrom is an ace among aces when healthy) is how far you have to look down the depth chart to see where you are. You lose the #1 thirdbaseman and you look to #2 thirdbaseman. Maybe that's Howard Johnson replacing Ray Knight and everything works out for the best. But when you lose the #1 starting pitcher, the #6 starter enters the rotation. Right now, Elieser Hernandez, Joey Lucchesi, and Tylor Megill are floating around the fringes as placeholders, but their position in and around the rotation is a little bit less symbolic and a little more concrete than it was 24 hours ago. We mentioned earlier that seeing a top starting pitcher signed away is an especially tough blow from a Mets Roster Central standpoint, as you don't see him replaced by the second stringer, but by the sixth stringer. Well, the corallary is also true. Signing Justin Verlander is extra sweet because he's measured not from how much an improvement he is over Max Scherzer, but by how much an improvement he is over Joey Lucchesi. All respect to Lucchesi, but I'm hoping that the answer is ... significant. Despite Verlander's Cy Young season, Scherzer's greater degree of recent health and relative youth probably gives him a better projection for 2023. That's how Mets Roster Central is scoring it, anyhow. Sick thought, but wouldn't it be something if the Mets assigned him #38? YOUR Projected 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

While Mets Roster Central has legitimized yesterday's reported Justin Verlander signing with a roster update, the team still hasn't made it official. They have, nonetheless, announced the following impact signings.
One might guess these gentlemen will be seen in camp, but no outlet we've yet seen is reporting that a camp invite came with the signings, so for now, they are on the outside, looking in. Reid-Foley had UCL surgery in May, so it's probably a moot point in his case. But hey! Let's go, Guam! Remaining free agents linger below. 2022 Major League Free Agents

The first two weeks of December have been a busy time for the Mets and subsequently a busy time for Mets Roster Central. Every time we'd get a new transaction plugged in, the Mets would make a further move. Compooters work fast, but programming them, not so much. And no sooner had the Mets signed Kodai Senga than MRC realized that baseball-reference.com had begun including data from the Japan Western League, which is sort of the AAA of Japan. Senga seems to have spent a part of virtually every season there, despite pretty much never having a bad year.
Michel Otañez can throw a ball through a brick wall, clocked as high as 103(!!) in the minors. That never really added up to any extended level of effectiveness, though you'd think they'd still make room for him if the peripherals were there. A hunnert and three is a hunnert and three. But a 10.6 k/9 rate isn't that terrific for this era, especially for a flamethrower like Michel, and combined with a 6.2/9 career walk rate, he fits firmly in the “project” category. This leaves Bryce Montes de Oca has the fireballer-who-is-still-a-few-adjustments-from-thriving that the Mets have opted to stick with. Pray for his elbow. Transactions, 12/5/2022
Adonis Medina had a cool beard and a name that will always get him one more chance. As for us, we'll always have Los Angeles. Transactions, 12/6/2022
Along with Zack Wheeler, Taijuan Walker will make two pitchers in the Phillies rotation who have passed the Can He Pitch in New York? test, also adding up to two guys who will have that extra motivation of pitching against their exies — and that will go up to three if they re-sign Noah Syndergaard. And then there's Aaron Nola. Something to think about if the teams have a showdown series in August or something. Editor's note: Shortly after this useless passage was written, Noah Syndergaard was reported to have signed with the Dodgers. Transactions, 12/7/2022
Moving on to the last day of the Winter Meetings, Keyshawn Askew for Brooks Raley is a textbook TiTTs trade. Keysh has has the makeup and the minor league profile, but Brooks has something of an MLB track record. But that something isn't all that much. His defining period as a pro has been the five years he spent as a good-ish starter pitching in the KBO. And Dusan ain't Broadway. This is the offseason transaction that has been toughest to figure. Elieser Hernandez is knocked to the side by the José Quintana acquisition, and he joins the hopefuls at AAA. Elieser hasn't done much in the majors, but his minor league career has been stronger than Tylor Megill's, so don't give up on him yet. The Phillies were the busiest team in the Rule V draft, and Mets Roster Central likes to think that Trey Cobb, who has the name of a Hall-of-Fame legend plus and extra “re,” will be offered back at some time this season, and the Phils are just keeping him warm until the Mets need him. John Curtiss was signed hurt and spent a year rehabbing with the Mets, so they clearly want him to make the team in 2023. Their winter acquisitions seem to have taken away his space in the pen, though. I have him as out of options above, but as Mets Roster Central has been wrong about options before. We are working on installing a logic tree into our database to sort out whether a player has options or not, but as impenetrable as option rules can be in general, all the special roster rules for the 2020 season really add an extra layer of imperviousness to the logic. We expect to see Jake Mangum as Miami's regular or semi-regular centerfielder to start the 2023 season, joining Keyshawn as guys who have everything going for them except high prospect ratings, so it takes a Florida team to give them the opportunity they've otherwise earned. Maybe he's the next Justin Turner, but probably not. Zach Greene really knows his way around his photo-editor software: The extra dips the Mets took into the Rule V draft probably are more about filing gaps in the organization than about snagging a prospect, but you may be aroused to find that Jonathan Araúz comes to the organization with 68 games of MLB experience yet was available in the minor league phase. I don't know how that works, but he seems like somebody who may get a call in an infield pinch. Also, Mateo Gil is the son of longtime big-leaguer (and current big-league coach) Benji Gil, so if pedigree is your thing, you ought to be happy. Transactions, 12/9/2022
David Robertson replaces Dellin Betances in the role of longtime Yankee bullpenner using the Mets to see if he has anything left while not wanting to leave town. Dick Tidrow abides. Transactions, 12/10/2022
The Brandon Nimmo deal, while heartbreaking for Khalil Lee fans, seems more important every day. Even coming off a somewhat disappointing year (maybe especially so), he seems harder to replace the more you think about it. And while you're thinking, check out how Trevor Williams, apart from the beard and long locks, kind of looks like Chris Bassitt too. Transactions, 12/11/2022
While Kodai Senga (IMDB spells his name Koudai) displaces the last homie from the starting five, MRC is not predicting David Peterson getting aced off the staff completely. Again, 2020 has left it ambiguous whether he has a remaining option, but even if he does, he's probably in a position to get a good look as a reliever while also serving as a safety valve for the aging rotation. That's the way we're calling it, anyhow. Sadly, not a lot of staffers were willing to get behind Tayler Saucedo at all when this question was raised. Transactions, 12/11/2022
How much more would Chris Bassitt be making on this contract had he pulled out even one of his last two starts? Each of those probably cost him at least a million per season.* Transactions, 12/14/2022
And to clear up any future confusion, Brandon Drury was the emergency 2021 infielder who was called up and smoked the ball all over the place, and Travis Blankehorn was the emergency infielder who was called up and didn't. But then there was Pittsburgh, and we'll always have Pittsburgh. YOUR Projected 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

Joining the carelessness of other internet dweebs, Mets Roster Central staff have fallen into the habit of inputting transactions as if they are faits accomplis when they are credibly reported, rather than when they are officially announced. This, naturally can cause our team to get egg on their faces, but they've been working hard to get everything in place in time to get some quality rest with the family over the holiday.
José Peraza was the surprising author of six 2021 homers for the injury-riddled Mets of that summer, and here he tries to return to join the proud legion of Mets with multiple tenures. He's doing a good job building a career like late-stage David Cone, bouncing between the Mets, the Yankees and the Sox, allowing him to put down roots in Connecticut and get some tenure in with all the Northeast Corridor powerhouses. Transactions, 12/16/2022
While Trevor May joins the extreme exodus of 2022 bullpenners, and the Mets exchange which catcher will squat Francisco Álvarez' spot until he's ready, the Mets add minor league hopeful Abraham Almonte who, at 33, seems like he's been around forever, but is still about 168 days short of getting his six years in. Transactions, 12/19/2022
Seriously, it's like the Mets are a magnet on reverse polarity and 2022 bullpenners are iron filings. Transactions, 12/20/2022
With the bullpen free agency crisis, Yoan Lopez had opened the offseason as the second-most prominent reliever in the Mets stable. By the time of this deal, the Mets had grabbed so many vet relievers that Yoan was now the second-most prominent reliever in the Syracuse Mets stable. Seeing as he was out of options, dealing him off was only prudent. Dom Chiti, legacy of the very first Mets season is a deeply welcome part of the still-to-be-realized Mets future, but hopefully he lays off the fighting — or alternatively, keeps his brawling opponents limiited to Stubby Clapp and other coachly figures. Transactions, 12/21/2022
Obviously, we are too fast in announcing it. But looking at it on paper, it gives us pause anyhow. When the Mets opted not to overcommit to Ray Knight, they knew they had his predecessor (Howard Johnson) still available to succeed him, coming off a poor year but still with a lot of baseball ahead of him. They also had Kevin Mitchell Dave Magadan and Gregg Jefferies putting copious pressure on from below. Well, if the Mets are forced to walk away from Carlos Correa, there's still plenty of upside. Eduardo Escobar, while a switch-hitter, isn't that analogous to Howard Johnson (certainly agewise), but probably still has something left and if he does, provides most of what Correa provides. Luis Guillorme certainly isn't analogous to Kevin Mitchell. But do the Mets really want to shut the door that hard on third to Brett Baty and Mark Vientos? We don't think they do. Transactions, 12/22/2022
Scooter heads west as the Mets eighth all-time homerun hitter, and 15th all-time RBI guy. Another year would have had him passing some pretty sacred names, but another year was not to be. Transactions, 12/24/2022

No reports of any subsequent transactions, so while you can't definitively state that he has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Syracuse, you can fairly claim "Whose Woods this is, I think I know."

Dini is a Wagner University guy who spent his whole (long) minor league career with KC, getting into 64 MLB games in 2019. He's more of a hitter who catches than a catcher. The 16 plate appearances that Michael Peréz got last season probably game out of Nick Dini's picnic basket, but as you may have heard, the Mets have a catcher. Transactions, 12/31/2022
Campos and Mena, who the Mets are bringing back, are definitely defense-first catchers, and are probably have little chance to reach the bigs, but make for good development partners for the pitching prospects. They were born two weeks apart. Lorenzo Cedrola, whose name sounds like a brand of vegetable oil, is a baserunner/flycatcher type who has a little bit of pop for a small dude. With a good start, he could pass Khalil Lee on the depth chart. Transactions, 1/3/2022

As T.J. McFarland displaces Tommy Hunter as the highest-profile pitcher to get a minor league deal, he has to be considered a serious contender to break camp with the Mets once the everybody-gets-injured part of our spring begins. For now, his projection takes him toward the top of Syracuse's pen, from whence he dispatches Stephen Ridings toward Binghamton*.

As noted, Sam Clay is not related to Ken Clay, which is probably a good thing, as Ken has had a tough time staying out of trouble in his post-baseball life. Sam is an extreme groundball pitcher, which will probably be a good thing to be when pitching in the southwest. Transactions, 1/3/2022

This takes us up to 1/15, when the signings of the new class of international prospects become official. They will follow, but SHMEESH, they look young. In all the photos I was able to find of the first guy, he looks about nine.
Gilbert Gomez is a real comer, taking over St. Lucie at 30, clearly making an impression after a few seasons in the organization. He had previously been an outfielder in the organization from 2009 to 2015, however, exhibiting a batting eye, but not much else, having perhaps his best season with St. Loo in 2014. May be worth keeping an eye on. Reid Brignac had a nine-year career career as an MLB futility infielder, his career highlight happening at spring training when he revived his girlfriend (now wife) who had collapsed in his shower. Transactions, 1/13/2023
Luis De La Cruz has never played above the DSL, and has shown neither power nor speed, but when a .252 batting average over 195 career trips to the plate also comes with a .405 OBP, that's lottery ticket worth cashing in your James McCann chip for. If he only had a face. Transactions, 1/13/2023
Connor Grey was a phantom Met in 2022, called up from September 1 to September 4 without making an appearance. That's a rare status, but he's returning to the organization, hoping the shed the "phantom" part of it. MRC guesses we've got to root for him.

The Pham deal was supposedly finalized after a physical on 1/19, but it took until yesterday to formally announce it. We guessed that they were trying to sort out how to open up the roster space, but ultimately, the DFA'd Tayler Saucedo, which seemed like the likely move a week ago. The move not only puts Jeff McNeil in a strong position to take most of his turns at second, where his bat is more valuable, it also completes the roster with an Established Veteran That picture, of course, is all but guaranteed to change by April 1. No word yet on whether either of these fellows has been invited to camp. Most likely Perez will, and probably Mejia, but camp invite info stays strangely embargoed these days. Mejia joins infielder Jonathan Araúz among the Mets small-but-mighty Panamanian contingent, and will likely compete with Panama in Pool A of the World Baseball Classic. Transactions, 1/28/2023
Jankowski's signing, along with the Mets signing Tim Locastro, is a good indicator that most teams want a speed specialist, but don't want to waste room on the 40 if the guy isn't in the big leagues. Transactions, 1/29/2023
Gomez, now 26, will be joining his third organization without having gotten above high A. He's improving each year in his power production (26 homers in 2022), and seeing a correlating lack of power as he goes.

Obviously, who will and won't be camping with the Mets is not particularly new news. One thing worth noting is that D.J. Stewart was signed (and invited) the day of these announcements. Like several of the Mets' fringe hopefuls. D.J. is a former first-rounder with good power and issues making consistent contact. That's hardly a unique profile for a AAAA minor league free agent hopeful. He may have maxed out or he may have just ran out of time, but he's kind of like Smitty in regards to where he is in his career. Transactions, 2/4/2022

We know all about Plummer. Locke St. John was claimed off waivers from the Cubs back in May and was seen as a lefty bullpen option, but he caught the homerun bug in Syracuse and never pitched his way back. Lucas Gordillo (Li'l Fatty?) is another example of the Mets signing several older Latin amateurs this offseason. I don't know if they're trying to mine an underappreciated asset or two or if they're just trying to get some hard work for the teenagers they really value by making them go against fully mature players. Transactions, 2/6/2022
I imagine that Sam Coonrod is better than the 7.82 ERA he put up for Philadelphia last season, or the 8.00 he registered with Reading (both in small sample sizes). I mean, he almost has to be, right? But it takes a helluva scout to find hidden talent in relievers waived by the Phillies. There's always room for another arm, certainly, and anybody can turn a corner. He comes to camp at or about 19th on the team's depth chart. Injuries and such should help him escape the Binghamton assignment he's projected for, but still, you really have to squint to see how that's worth a spot on the roster, and a DFA of Khalil Lee, so yeah, this is probably more about the Mets being done with Lee. If Coonrod is on deck to be the team's next DFA, that'll really tip their hand as to their motivations with regard to this transaction. Transactions, 2/7/2022
Former Yankee farmhand Phil "Aren't You Glad You Used" Diehl"?" came over from Cincinnati in the Tyler Naquin trade. I suspect that he was included more to fill a hole in the Syracuse staff than with much hope of future Flushing contributions, but his moving on to Cleveland is one more strike against the team's 2023 deadline activity. Lest it go unsaid, José Acuña and Hector Rodriguez, who went to Cincy in that deal, tore it up at their respective levels. Rodriguez especially. YOUR Projected 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

Mike Montgomery has a had a solid MLB career as a lefthanded starter but he's been little more than a punching bag the last few years as he has floated among AAA teams, KBO, and indy ball. Last year with Syracuse (6.92 ERA) was no exception. But he has five years-plus of MLB experience, so maybe he's grinding it out, hoping to somehow achieve the magic of six years worth of roster time. Facewise, he kind of reminds me of a thinner version of Brian Schneider. Transactions, 2/10/2022
If you're still inclined to read the tea leaves with regard to Khalil Lee, his clearing waivers and being retained has not come with an invite to MLB camp. It does, however, once again knock Agustin Ruíz below the bottom of the bubble in the stiff competition for Syracuse outfield spots. GOOD LUCK, AGUSTIN!! Agustin is also not invited to camp.

Here's where the rubber hits the road. There aren't any big surprises in the first cuts. Certainly Orze, Hartwig, and Walker were among the bottom-ranked hopefuls in camp. Parada might have stuck around a little more, as catchers do, but best to get him out of Álvarez's way. The interesting part here is the Mets giving up on Zach Greene. This opens up room for John Curtiss, who was out of options, so they might have saved a guy by tossing a guy back. Transactions, 3/14/2022
Its funny how folks manage to leave an imprint at the right time. David Peterson, Elieser Hernández, and Joey Lucchesi all have stronger track records than Tylor Megill, but Megill clearly made an impression on the right people (Buck, mostly, we would guess) with his opening day start and strong first half, because all the indicators suggest that he's first in line to get Quintana's rotation spot, despite his prolonged absence in last season's second half, and his ineffective performances upon his return, helping the Mets blow his division lead. Garrison had been leading off the Mets minor league free agent list all off season. His first name sounds like a bruising running back and his last name like a Christian quarterback. So I always thought of him as a hybrid. One of those broad-shoudered quarterbacks who's a threat to break some tackles if he ges flushed out of the pocket. Transactions, 3/17/2023
Lots of St. Patrick's day action, with two new men brought into the organization, and David Peterson — by performance and by off-the-field indicators — moving ahead of Tylor Megill for the open rotation slot. If that's truly the way it breaks, it would leave only one lefthander in the opening day pen for the Mets, so keep an eye on how the Mets use T.J. McFarland and Zach Muckenhirn, and lets see if the roster opens its arms to them. Transactions, 3/18/2023
No small amount of action on The Feast of St. Cyril of Jerusalem as well. The shuffling off of Almonte, Cedrola, and Davis reminds us that the team has no extra outfielders on their 40-player roster. So if Brandon Nimmo can't answer the bell on Opening Day, the Mets would either have to make a roster maneuver to replace him, or replace him with an infielder and possibly re-insert Jeff McNeil into the outfield mix. This should be something very much like the actual Mets Opening Day Roster. We're pretty sure Drew Smith is likely to make it, but right now, pending maneuvers to come, we have him on the outside looking in, as he seems to have options (though we could be wrong on that score — as available data contradicts itself.)
Smith has had a strong spring and D.J. Stewart has a cycle in his back pocket, so good for everybody who lasted this long. It's been announced already that the Mets have planned to keep Hunter — he had the option of asking for his release so he put their feet to the fire. Transactions, 3/26/2023
The big takeaway here is that Elly-LASER Hernandez is suddenly likely to open the season as an MLB reliever, rather than a AAA starter. Transactions, 3/27/2023
The Mets clear up their rotation and their outfield in one day. And go for extreme speed that doesn't necessarily get on base over modest power that doesn't necessarily make contact. Understandable, as the latter (a) is extreme, and (b) can be deployed on the basepaths and on defense even when the guy isn't hitting. BUT ... the impact here will also be felt on the infield, as the team goes into the season with a single guy to backup at second, third, and short, so don't be surprised to see Mark Canha at third now and then. Like the best disco in town, the Mets' roster had a lot of movement over the weekend.
This transacting was especially interesting, because it took place in the middle of a game that began Saturday and ended Sunday, so the starting pitcher, Joey Lucchesi, was sent down during a game whose outcome was still in doubt — and he was, at the time, the pitcher of record on the losing side. He ultimately got left off the hook, but the last inning was pitched for the Mets by Dennis Santana, giving the Mets two player appearances in a single game by players occupying the same roster spot. This is certainly against the spirit of the rules of roster limitations, but the Mets certainly aren't the first team to use that little loophole. Transactions, 5/14/2023 (between games)
Ultimately, Santana's promotion didn't even last a full game, but he at least got another inning in before returning to DFAland. Raley and Muckenhirn's simultaneous availability meant that, for one game, the Mets actually had two lefthanded relievers in the bullpen. Jerry Manuel would have been so happy. Transactions, 5/15/2023

This really makes for some squinting roster alignment. McNeil is going to be more regularly deployed at second base than outfield, presumably, and now joins the infield regiment where he balongs, but the team now has seven infielders and four outfielders. That leaves them with seven infielders, four outfielders, and no real lefthanded alternative for Cahna, Marte, or Pham unless they want to play Escobar at second and float McNeil back out to the pastrued. But Escobar generallyhasn't shown much as a lefty hitter. See you soon, Carlos Carrasco. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

` Of these, the real gnus is Mejia, who was leading the team in starts at AAA this season, but the return of several Mets starters from the IL and suspensions made for a big crowd of starters in Syracuse. While Umberto has been out-pitching Dylan Bundy, Tony Dibrell, José Butto, Denyi Reyes, and pretty much any starter not named "Lucchesi," that's really not saying much, as the non-Lucchesian Syracuse starters have struggled from day one, and while some have more asset value than others, they are all giving good imitations of guys about to be released. Malm and Guerrera are both local guys (Malm comes from Medford by way of SUNY Albany, Guerrera from Watertown by way of Fairfield) who didn't hit much in the low minors, but can now spend the rest of their lives saying they were Mets, sorta kinda. Narváez is rehabbing at Brooklyn while Nido was at St. Lucie, which we guess spares the awkwardness of knowing one of them will probably not be around in a few weeks.

San Diego's waiver claim takes care of half the catcher-glut issue the Mets were facing, along with saving the team about a million buckaroonies. The other half seemingly looms with the coming reactivation of Omar Narváez. Maybe the Mets go with three guys for a time. It wouldn't be ideal, but it wouldn't be unworkable.

It's not altogether clear what kind of tomato the Mets have plucked here. Over four years of eligibility with Stetson U. (and what good player ever came from there?) he profiled as a three-true-outcome corner infielder/corner outfielder, slugging in a manner that suited his 6'5" frame, but doing better in smaller sample sizes. This included three years of collegiate summer ball at three levels, with the second in the elite Cape Cod League before spending his third summer back in the barely relevant world of the Florida Collegiate Summer League. Undrafted, he elected to use the fifth year of eligibility granted him by the COVID-era rules. Transferring to Alabama, in the Elite SEC, he maintained the same profile, putting up a .964 OPS over a scant 48 plate appearances — used mostly as a pinch-hitter, appearing only four times on defense. But again he found himself undrafted. This is less true than it used to be, because of the draft including ever-fewer rounds, but it used to be a loose rule that everybody gets drafted out of the SEC. This includes your utility infielders and backup catchers. But it's not so true anymore, and wasn't true for our pinch-hitting fifth-year senior. Not getting any sniffs as an undrafted free agent, the now-23-year-old signed on with Evansville of the Atlantic League — as a pitcher! And that's where the Mets found him, unscored upon in his first two innings, giving up two hits and a walk, striking out three. The wire says they've signed him as an outfielder and assigned him to St. Lucie, but he hasn't appeared in the outfield for anybody since 2021, playing 2022 as a pinch-hitter/firstbaseman, and now a pitcher in 2023. What's it gonna be, Foggy?

Another mysterious transaction here that went down in recent days. The transaction boards are describing him as an outfielder, but while he has played eight games in left in his career, he's actually an infielder. He's in fact an infielder of the Juan Uribe variety, a guy who plays mostly on the corners, with the sort of gummy-like build that makes it surprising that he's sometimes used in the middle of the diamond, but he is. He's also like Uribe in that he's the type of hitter that Keith says, "Doesn't get cheated up there." He swings real hard, and while he mostly doesn't elevate, the power is there when he does. Lots of big league experience, but none of it in this decade. He's certainly long in the tooth, but he has the best hitting track record of any of the veterans at Syracuse, with a lot of minor league seasons over .900 in OPS. His acquisition, along with that of

The Nottoli promotion isn't final and official as of this typing, and on most days it's better to be certain than to be quick, but we're reporting this as a done deal. Welcome to the Mets, Vincent from Tempe. One can read several things from the Megill demotion. Possibly the Mets are merely using the off day to skip his next turn in the rotation. Perhaps they are preparing to return David Peterson from AAA, where he has been mostly OK over his last few starts, but had one blowup. Or perhaps they are finally getting ready to launch the Quintana Missle. But as José has only faced 18 batters at St. Lucie so far, that last one seems a tad unlikely. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

This trade had been coming pretty much all season. With the Mets top four prospects all hitters at AAA, and three of them infielders, the redundancy represented by Escobar every day became a less of a luxury and more of an impediment. The only thing that could have kept him around all year would be an injury at the big league level or a catastrophic serial failure at the minor league level. Fortunately, we didn't go there. What remains to be seen from this deal is who is added to the MLB roster tomorrow. We probably get Vientos back, but it could be Mauricio or another. If healthy, Crow and Marceaux instantly become the Mets top two starters at AA. That's no certainty, as Crow had been recently eating up Injured List time. If "Coleman Crow" wasn't already a super-cool-enough action-hero name, his middle name is "McCade."

There's a missing move here that will have to be made before tomorrow's game. Adding Gott to the roster gives them 27, so somebody will have to be removed. We're suspecting a T.J. McFarland DFA, but a lot can happen between now and then. We won't post the roster until we have clarity. When Gott is going good, he's got a wicked two seamer that dances up in the zone. He started off this year great, but he developed some back problems. With one more veteran reliever added, there's reason to suspect a further trade or two to thing things out in those ranks. Edwin Uceta had already been rehabbing with Syracuse, so his being added to the 60-Day is probably just a matter of housekeeping, to delay having to remove anybody else from the roster for a few days, rather than a re-injury. Elieser Hernandez came over from the Marlins in the trade that brought in Jeff Brigham, so it'll be nice to see them in the same bullpen. He also starts, but with injury already wiping out half his year, we suspect the Mets have no plans to use him as such in 2023.

As it turns out, there was more than one move coming today, as the Mets used Independence Day to make a couple of players closer to free.
With the Denyi Reyes transaction, the Mets exploit the little-appreciated advantage to having your AAA starters working with ERAs north of 6.00, and that's that they're much easier to slip through waivers. Jeff Brigham has certainly had his moments, but his last apperance on Sunday certainly wasn't one of them, and that's about as long a leash as you get when you're a relief pitcher with options. Danny Mendick for Stewart is the real story here. Mendick's main role seems to have been as a righthanded alternative to Brett Baty. He's a-gonna make the team pretty lefty-heavy on the bench, along with Narváez, Guillorme, and the like. If D.J. is the guy I remember from Baltimore, you'll like him, with puffy jowly features, his nickname should be "Babe." YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

The process by which the Mets rotation has stabilized has been gradual, but stabilized it has, and so it's unlikely we'll see another start by Denyi Reyes anytime soon. It's conceivable he could return as a reliever, but he may have a ticket to the Mexican League waiting to be punched. We tried to get a photo of Colin Houck in his baseball uniform, but he's too shy-to-shy. Transactions, 7/10/2023
We have a puzzler in Nolan McLean. Firstly, he's a two-way player at multiple levels. He went to Oklahoma State looking to play both baseball and football, but it's only after he quit the football grind after two seasons that his baseball profile improved. This got him drafted as a pitcher/third-baseman by the Orioles with the third overall pick in 2022. But Baltimore saw something they didn't like in his physicals, and they threw him back. Switching to outfielder/relief pitcher, he had a strong Big 12 season for OSU. He was playing well enough to dispel most health concerns until he crashed into a wall in April, injuring his MCL. He returned to finish out the season, with strong power, but middling average. It's hard to say how the Mets will use him, but we're lining him up with the outfielders for now. Kade Morris has the look of a guy for whom it's been a little to easy. His teeth are seriously white, his hair shag is on point, and his tan is an all-American look without being soft enough that you know his mother made sure he used sunblock for his games with his travel team. We fear the realities of pro ball are going to hit him smack in the face. He has a good chance at a decent career as a #4 starter/journeyman, but we sense a future that may knock that smile off his face a few times. Oh, let us be wrong. Extra points for Austin Troesser for putting an indy-band brick-wall photo out there for the likes of us to grab. We see a healthier guy who will be able to take what baseball dishes out, because he's got his gaming and guitar interests to round him out. Noah Hall may or may not be the only player of color the Mets have drafted so far this season. Our sources are trying to confirm. Lastly, Stetson could stand to use a little less glowing radioactive waste in their players' profile shots. You're green. We get it.

Ten new Metly figures from the last day of the draft!!
A Gavyn and a Kellum don't, perhaps, give us the name power we are looking for, but play close attention to the hair game we're getting out of Brady Kirtner and Jake Zitella. Those thumbnails above don't really give us the full effect, especially in Kirtner's kase, where we are looking at an official college shot with his hair all sweetened up with product. But look at him in high school getting his freak on! I don't want to put too much pressure on the guy, but we're clearly looking at the next Jacob deGrom here. Zitella, meanwhile, has himself a linebacker's upper body, to go along with his Sampsonian locks. His game also includes a little cutiepie pout when it's called for. He's got the lower lip of a young Angelina Jolie and he knows it. John Valle is the real sleeper here. Despite coming from the beisbol hotbed Tampa area, and despite having a Cuban pedigree, a pitcherly build (6'3", 196), and a 1.37 ERA in his senior year, there's very little on him coming from the national bureaus. He's sometimes listed as "John Valle-Vera" or "John Valle Vera" and that may have sprung some of the confusion. Maybe it's the falling-over violence in his pitching motion (see below) that has put watchers off. He strikes me as a candidate to head to college to improve his draft position, but we'll see if that is so soon enough.

We have a lot o' catching up to do on draft signings now that we've got all the draft data into the database that's never going to fire.
Christian Pregent, despite being from a Floridian school that never produced anyone good, is actually a Syracuse native. The fact that his name sounds like some sort of scandal only increases my certainty that he is one of Fman's secret children. Transactions, 7/14/2023
The immediate MLB impact amid this flurry of youthful signings is the return (to the extent that a first appearance can be called a return) of José Quintana. Quint hadn't been performing well in his final rehab appearances, but simply ran out of eligibility for continued rehabbing. For that reason, he was unusually added to the roster several days before the Mets would call on him. That will be when he takes David Peterson's spot in the rotation, scheduled to be on Thursday, and knocks Peterson to the bullpen, where it will be interesting to see him get a chance to stick. Ironically, considering the leash Quintana is scheduled to get, Peterson may have a better chance of walking away with a W on Thursday than Q has. Transactions, 7/15/2023
Morris Kade sounds like a punishing defensive back out of Clemson. Kade Morris kind of looks like Steven Matz' happier cousin. The real story here is Nolan McLean, who plays outfield, third, and first, but also relieves and starts on the mound. The Mets haven't announced how they plan to deploy him, and possibly he'll pull a Skip Lockwood and cycle through several roles as both a hitter and pitcher before settling, but if you want to dream of him arriving at the big-league level as a gen-u-ine two-way player, I'm not going to stop you. Transactions, 7/16/2023
Sam has been riding the IL Train since spring training with what had been reported as a "lat strain." We're guessing it was ultimately more than that, but we'll likely NEVER KNOW!! Transactions, 7/17/2023
Stephen Ridings, amazingly, hit the IL on the same day as Coonrod with a .... right lat strain! So that's either a paperwork diagnosis, or it was a really bad day for right lats. Either way, ex-Yankee Ridings — now rocking a beard that can help him pass himself off as Josh Edgin at your next corporate event — had some really good performances rounding into form at Syracuse, and the Mets were perhaps lucky to sneak him through waivers, as he might have something to offer the big team later in the season.

Yesterday was an exciting day for signing as the Mets raked in most of their unsigned draftees!!
Also joining the company is undrafted free agent Dakota Hawkins. This is exciting because of his swinging Eckersleyan hair-and-'stache combo, and it's exciting because he comes with a name that makes his sound like the protagonist in a genre fiction serial collection with a name like Riders of the Chisholm Trail, or the like. He's welcome with an embrace that says that non-drafted free agents may still be longshots, but aren't as desperately long as they used to be. Still swimming in the Unsigned Draftees pool are starting pitchers Christian Little (round 19) and Gavyn Jones (18), along with reliever Brady Kirtner (round 12).

Mets Roster Central likes to be first with all the scoops, and that's why we're here to tell you that 2017 fourth-round draft pick and 2023 Syracuse Met Tony Dibrell was released back on May 31. Tony enjoyed a modestly successful minor league career, staying in the starting mix, almost never the best starter on his team almost never the worst, regularly enjoying promotions that were somewhat social and somewhat merited, all the while avoiding the Grim Reaper of Release. That ended this season when a combination of injuries and double-digit ERAs caught up with him. Transactions, 7/1/2023
Those bemoaning Tony's loss will be happy to know that his career continues on in The Atlantic League, where the majors go to test-drive crackpot rule changes! Blessedly, his 5.85 ERA is five runs lower than what he was rocking with Syracuse.

This report comes through our tip line from Cowtipper. Jaylin was (and still is, to be sure) a 29-year-old flycatcher with 95 MLB plate appearances spread over four seasons with the Giants and Red Sox, but couldn't escape (or really even maintain) AAA mediocrity this year. It's a shame to get sent packing in July, because as we are seeing, MLB jobs can open in August. Transactions, 7/21/2023
This is also a tip from the 'Tipper, who we're going to have to recruit to the MRC staff. (We can't just let him keep dropping hints, because that sort of makes us the cows!) Ty White was the sort of chunky, bearded, bat-first utility infielder of the pre-stardom Justin Turner (Josh Satin/Ty Wigginton/Eric Campbell too) model. He mostly stayed on the corners, but could play the middle of the infield — just know that if he is actually playing there, something went meaningfully awry with Plan A and Plan B. He was a small part of some big seasons with the mid-teens Houston Astros, but forgot to pack his bat after a mid-2019 trade to the Dodgers, and never got back to the bigs again, despite cycling through five franchises in four years. Fun fact: That trade from Houston to Los Angeles was in exchange for Andre Scrubb. No wonder he didn't hit for the Dodgers — how demoralizing is it to literally get traded for a Scrubb! Transactions, 7/31/2023
Now we're getting more contemporary as this transaction is the story of the day. Jussie Jarvis instantly becomes the top starting pitcher profile on the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, just as Luisangel Acuña has immediately become the team's top offensive player. We'd love to make a prediction about who joins the MLB roster, but we're probably simply looking at Starling Marte being activated from the migraine list. We hope for the best for Starling.

Hey, Mets Roster Central staff have caught up! Clearly the failure keep pace with the organization's awesome rate of transaction activity was keeping the team from winning!! Who can win when you don't know who is on the team?!!
The ex-Yankee Stephen Ridings was excited for the opportunity to re-appear in the majors with the beard he couldn't rock in the Bronx, but he didn't last the purging. With a 4.91 ERA in 11 innings, he didn't exactly pitch his way off the team, so much as make himself an easy choice to drop when all the roster shuffling went down. The Syracuse team also lost two roster spots when two pitchers in two days got dinged for sticky fingers, so things got tight But hey, we signed a skinny, big-eared kid from Taijuan Walker's hometown! Transactions, 8/1/2023
Phil Bickford, who you've no doubt seen plenty of by now, got his career off to a rip-roaring start, promoted all the way from high-A and turning in two terrific seasons out of the pen for the Dodgers in 2020 and 2021, but has more or less just been a guy since then. He's really checked a lot of boxes, being a former first-round draft pick, enjoying a banned-substance suspension as a minor-leaguer, and rocking a classic relief-pitcher head of hair and facial fuzz. Sadly, it hasn't added up to much Metly so far. Adam Kolarek labored for six years as a Mets minor leaguer, reaching the top of the chain before being released at the end of 2015. That was dumb, as Kolarek would soon establish himself as a mostly successful LOOGy, before new rools made LOOGys a bunch of dinosaurs. Now he takes his extreme splits (.854 career OPS vs. righties, .501 vs. lefties) to Syracuse. If you're an Immaculate Grid player, Rafael Ortega is your friend. Though he's only 32, the Mets are his tenth organization, including two tenures with the Rangers. Sadly they are only his sixth MLB assignment, having previously played for (get out your pencils) the Rockies, the Angels, the Marlins, the Braves, and the Cubs for the last two seasons. Transactions, 8/2/2023
Michael Peréz couldn't make much of one more day of a big-league life, but he's been on the 40-Player Roster for most of the season, so he's been doing some serious rolling of the odometer on his big-league service time. Jonathan Araúz may seem like the Rafael Ortega of infielders ... and he may in fact play like the Rafael Ortega of infielders ... but he's a pretty rare bird, being only the sixth Panamanian-born Met to suit up and play for the team. The last such animal was Ariel Jurado, who started one game on the mound for the Mets in 2020, and if you have any memories of the appearance, we doff our hats to you. Transactions, 8/3/2023
Luke Voit, since requesting and receiving his desired release, has yet to catch on with a new employer, but there have been rattlings of the Yankees sniffing around what we can only assume his very odourous feet, and even some speculation that they will immediate insert him in place of Anthony Rizzo, which sounds like wackiness, but we're just here to report. Transactions, 8/4/2023
Looking about the long and productionless convalescence of Tim Locastro, it strikes us that the Mets have swung and missed a couple of times in a row looking for a speed-specialist for their bench in the offseason, hittiing only with the mid-season grab of Terrence Gore, who remains unsigned in 2023. Starling Marte hasn't gotten far in demonstrating that there is much difference between the active version of himself in 2023 and the Injured List version, but he always seems game to try. Not sure if it's worth mentioning, but the Mets recently released Branden Fryman, who'd been in their system since 2019 and who had played at Triple-A this year and last year. Upon further inspection, they've also released Triple-Aers Alex Valverde and Oscar Campos recently. Campos has been in the Mets system since 2021 and played a total of 12 games. He's one of those catchers that, though officially a player, acted more as a coach if I'm not mistaken. Since his release, he's hitting .449 in 78 at-bats for the independent Tri-City Valley Cats.

Branden Fryman is a good case study in how far a player can get on name recognition. Drafted in the late rounds out of a minor conference where he had put together a middling career, he made it all the way to AAA on Ordóñezesque offensive production practically year in and year out. Unless his defense was superior, his only strong showings came way back in 2019 in 48 plate appearances the now-defunct short-season New York-Penn League, along with a solid showing in the Cape Cod League the year before in 38 plate appearances. And considering his college career, he again probably only got invited on name reck. Manny Rodriguez is someone you might remember as an infielder with remarkably similar numbers to Fryman, though in more appearances. Rather than keep hacking for one more season, though, the Brooklyn native went back to high A to switch to pitching this past year. And while a 5.06 ERA is no embarassment in your first season on the mound since high school, but he walked a lot of guys. Like, a lot. Transactions, 8/12/2023 (between games)
The Mets actually got better between games of yesterday's double-header. (And it showed!) An earlier poll asked with former Brave at the end of the line Abraham Almonte was most like, and since he's demonstrated little ability to hit, field, or throw since then, the answer may be that he was the least of them. This DFA was certainly coming like a freight train. And if 80% of Tim Locastro's value is to be found in his legs, that's at least something we can honestly describe as value. Sorry, Honest Abe. Transactions, 8/13/2023
The Mets had to get back down to 26 players after the double-header, and unsurprisingly, they dropped the guy who they burned. If this demotion was a matter of merit, then, well, they probably would have dropped him anyhow, and a few more with him. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

Two housekeeping moves here. It appears that earlier reports that Elieser Hernandez had been activated at the end of his rehab stint were erroneous. Or maybe he got reinjured right away. His last minor league appearance was July 9, so counting forward sixty days from there, and you can conclude that the likelihood that we will ever see him — at least this season — has grown remote. Transactions, 8/14/2023
At the big league level, this amounts to Walker out, Coonrod in, as you saw last night. More broadly, the 60-Day Injured List assignment for Curtiss here effectively ends his season. I suppose, in theory, you could see him in the post-season. That's been a lot of roster time over two seasons for very little mound time for Double-S, and he's sadly a very good candidate for a non-tenderino — or an outright release — this offseason. Transactions, 8/15/2023
José Butto isn't on the schedule to start any upcoming games, and if he had been, they probably wouldn't activate him until just before the game, in order to save the roster spot. So look for the Mets to still be working David Peterson on a short leash tonight, with Butts available as his wingman for early relief. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

Housecleaning to catch up on below-the-radar comings and goings in the last 10 weeks, taking you RIGHT UP to today's transaction action!!
All that fuss about this Khalil Lee guy and we neglected to note when he joined another team. He deserves a memorial thread, if only for posterity's sake. Transactions, 7/14/2023
Justin Courtney's release, only three innings (with a 3.00 ERA) into his joining Syracuse, hit him as something of a shock. No matter where the depth chart says you are in the bullpen depth chart, when you're at AAA, your attitude is that the phone could ring at any time. But the reaper came first. He has since gotten past the shock, and taken a philosophical attitude with him to Central Islip. He's nonetheless been lit up there a few times, so who knows what's next? There's still plenty of time, and plenty of good seats, to go root for him in his Duckiness, though. Transactions, 7/16/2023
The Rockies have since called Chris Flexen up, and while that gave Flexie a chance to show those stupid Mets (who acquired him only to immediately eat his contract and let him go) what's what, his 7.78 ERA with Colorady is actually a tick higher than it was in Seattle. I mean, it's probably better, because he's pitching at altitude, but a 7.78 ERA isn't getting it done anywhere. Transactions, 7/16/2023
Oscar Campos received one of the unkindest cuts of all, having gotten into only one game this season, where he did nicely, going two-for-four with an RBI, before immediate getting put on the shelf. The Mets don't activate him until July 16, and he's all set to show off his game, but they release him the next day. You can't release somebody unless he's healthy enough to be on the active roster, so as soon as Oscar showed he was game, the Mets — crowded with catchers at AAA — rewarded him with a pink slip Transactions, 8/12/2023
Oscar's fellow releasee Alex Valverde quickly found this new gig, where he's started well, giving up a single run in three innings. Transactions, 8/15/2023
Nobody has beaten a path to the Jimmy Yacabonis front door yet, but I can see him getting an offer from a decent MLB team to join their AAA depth chart for the rest of the season. And clearly Yaca could as well. Transactions, 8/16/2023
Dennis Santana had more big-league experience than a lot of our churning relievers, and he looked like a big-leaguer out there on the mound, whatever that means. We were surprised to see him get through waivers, but squeeze through he did, putting him out of reach for the big league bullpen the last few months. But here he is getting another go, and he's a welcome sight for anybody concerned that some of the youths (read, Grant Hartwig) are getting spots whose leverage overwhelms them. To make room for him, they put DFA'd Edwin Uceta who has just come off a rehab assignment in the low minors, so expect him to slip through waivers as well.

The talented Edwin Uceta arrived via waiver claim and went the same way, so let us not weep, for we reap what we sow. Grant Harwig has shown himself to be fine when not entering with the bags juiced, but the idea that we always need more relievers will not go away. The roster expands to 28, giving us enough to fill up a 7x4 grid, with no Misters Met. With all three of their rookie infielders up, it looks like McNeil returns to being most regularly deployed with the outfielders. We still like the idea of using him at third and Batientos primarily at DH — at least next season. But anow, they're short in the outfield. Interestingly, Mendick goes down instead of Araúz. Mendick at least hits once a week, which is more than JA can claim, but Jonathan retains his spot with some sparkling defense, and that's not nothing. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

One might think that Luis Guillorme would be playing for Syracuse by now after a weekend with Brooklyn, and that may yet be true by the end of the day, but I suspect they are slow-walking his rehab assignment, as the extended look they are trying to get for Baty/Vientos/Mauricio does not leave a lot of playing time at the big league level for Guillorme over the remaining weeks of 2023. The Mets aren't working particularly hard in reporting the Sean Reid-Foley injury, and his Injured List assignment still hasn't appeared on their transaction page two days after its enactment, but perhaps it's getting more traction in his native Guam. Whatever the circumstances, the transaction and his replacement on the roster by Reed Garrett allowed the Mets to swap a Reid for a Reed. Mets Roster Central regrets that Garrett didn't get brought on for the save last evening, which might have allowed Faith and Fear in Flushing to write another compelling first-win/first-save/first-homer column, but with the understanding that bringing in a less accomplished pitcher merely to achieve a novel and coincidental historical statistic is almost never a winning strategy over the long haul, that regret is somewhat tempered. The deliberate return of Luis Guillorme takes him on to the post-season bound Binghamton Rumble Ponies, and while we sense the impending end of Jonathan Araúz' tenure (his appearance on defense in the ninth inning yesterday evening kind of sparked and "oh yeah, him" moment among our staff), it is worth noting that Guillorme has already been optioned once this season, and remains optionable for whatever weeks remain, so his ultimate return is not a fait accompli. It was Coonie's second blowup in his last three outings, and that leaves some room open for poetic justice in the form of Joey Lucchesi, who was splendid in his last turn on an MLB mound, shutting out St. Louis over 5 1/3 innings. Anthony Kay's selection in the 2015 draft represented the second straight year the Mets went for a Long Islander with their top pick, having taken Justin Dunn the previous year. Both also went to school in New England, Kay at UConn, and Dunn at BC. I don't know what that means, but obviously their scouts from a certain territory knew how to make a case for their guys. He left the organization after reaching AAA in 2019, heading to the Toronto system with Simeon Woods Richardson for Marcus Stroman — yet another Long Islander.

Apparently, this was actually a real thing, with paperwork and such. The notion of Bartolo Colón as a theoretically active ballplayer, for however long we were asked to sustain the notion, not only keeps ties with the pennant winners of 2015, but actually forwards the argument that we briefly had an active 20th Century ballplayer. The idea that these two would be exchanged for each other was a fait accompli, as they very much check all the same boxes — light-hitting utility infielder, of most use against righties, whose main current role is as a defensive sub at third. Guillorme just checks all those boxes better. Araúz had an opportunity, but was unable to dislodge Erasmo Ramirez as the best-ever Nicaraguan-born Met. Maybe next time. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

Lord Mountbattenfield has been starting in the majors and the minors, but we're expecting him to be working out of the bullpen for the Mets, as they currently have six guys in their rotation. In fact, look for him to make his debut in the late innings today. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

Happy to see Kay finally become a Met this evening. Sad to see Battenfield farmed out without getting an appearance. Sobered to see the Mets exchange one waiver claimee for another. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

It was important to MLB that this evening's game not be completed until Mets Roster Central had updated the personnel.
There was some notion that Denyi Reyes might get one of the Mets' last three starts, and we have him listed as a starter on the roster, but that's certainly not set in stone, and he may in fact be on the mound if this evening's game ever continues. We'll take the Mets at their word that the injury to McNeil's elbow isn't particularly serious, since we have all offseason to glean some clarification, and serious or not, his season is over. We were somewhat surprised to here it's Danny Mendick who is getting the call to return and not Jonathan Araúz, who showed some defensive utility, if not much with the bat. But then we realized that the infield is super-crowded (they can't even find work for Luis Guillorme, whose presence on the roster you could be forgiven for overlooking. They do, however need outfield depth, and Mendick has some experince there that Araúz hasn't. If he sees any defensive action at all, it's more likely to be left than in in the infield. The Mets could have just put McNeil on the 60 (since, again, his season is over either way), and called up a regular outfielder — Jaylen Palmer, say — but that would have meant putting somebody through waivers after the season. The best alternative is Abraham Almonte, whose free agency is assured anyhow, but given a chance to get another couple of days in the majors for one player or another, better a 30-year-old with at least some road ahead of him. Also, today was Mendick's birthday. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff

We can't let the season end without recordin the final tranny.
Sitting Nimmo down means their top three outfielders — Nimmo, McNeil, and Marte — all have to be carried across the finish line. If they wanted a third catcher, a farewell trip for Nido might have been nice, as he's all but certainly gone, but nobody asks us. YOUR 2023 Mets Coaching Staff
