Let's worry about Zimmo

Colorado is interested. What if he goes?

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

Nobody on the Mets — and few people in baseball — can do what Nimmo does. I don't relish the Mets trying to make Cahna or Guillorme their regular leadoff hitter.

But something happened with Nimmo this season. It was like somebody cool started making fun of him for his restraint and if finally got to him, and he totally fell out of his game, swinging at first pitches and being set up instead of setting the pitcher up. When the Mets of a certain vintage were down at the end of a game, I used to think that, at least, the team had Backman coming up in the ninth, so we'd probably get a baserunner.

This year, I was looking at Nimmo coming up in the ninth, and instead of expecting the Mets' best on-base guy to, you know, get on base, I had come to expect him to come up hacking at the first pitch, and generally popping to short center.

Nimmo had some really big moments this season, but it was a surprisingly frustrating year for me watching him from day to day. He seemed to muscling up and trying to yank more homers in June and July and his game just became unrecognizable.

I should be able to forgive him for two shitty months. He certainly finished strong enough, but ... i dunno. I'm having trust issues.

That said, if I'm Colorado, I'm targeting the hell out of him.

Does he have kids? Will the superior school districts be a factor?

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

Him being a Boras client scares me. And Colorado is a lot closer to his hometown than New York.

That said, while he's become a decent center fielder, that's a lot of real estate to cover in Coors. I suppose they could move him to a corner, but that's still a lot of ground to cover.

I hope he stays.

I just tend to think that they're all Boras clients when push comes to shove.

I think they'll keep him and make him happy financially. The only way they don't try to keep him is if they sign Judge, which is unlikely.

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

Diaz and Nimmo are the two pending free agents that I'd most like to retain. That being said, if the Mets want to add another slugger to their lineup, the outfield is the most likely spot. (Catcher is another, but I'm not sure how much they should count on from Alvarez in his rookie season.) If they add an outfielder, then either Nimmo or Marte or Canha has to be displaced, and Nimmo is the one without a contract.

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

i'm a big fan of brandon nimmo, and colorado sounds like a great landing spot for him. i hope they fall short, because, man, i'd really like to see him stay.

I guess the only way i'd not be upset about him leaving is if judge was coming.

because.... woof... the rest of the free agent of crop is sorely lacking.

I'm crazy but maybe Ronny Maurico plays center next year.

I'm into Zimmo more but what are the alternatives?

I'll say it, just to get on the record in our tiny universe here; No

Nimms in 2023 would make me sad.

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

I wouldn't be surprised if the Mets swung a big trade and brought in an outfielder and a starting pitcher. It would probably require them to dip into their prospects (maybe Baty would be included) and a couple of players from their 2022 big league roster. (Canha? Guillorme? Escobar?)

I don't know... I'm not good at coming up with deals because I'm not familiar enough with what players on other teams might be available or what the needs of those other teams are. But I think anyone other than Alonso, Lindor, McNeil, or Scherzer might be traded.

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that someone like Brandon Nimmo can really exist. At first I thought that whole golly-gee, always smiling sprint to first thing was a bit of a schtick. But over the years, it seems this is who he really is.

He's a devout Christian, seems authentic in wanting to be kind and do good. But somehow supports this modern Republican party. I mean, I just can't believe what type of disinformation can be out there that someone like Nimmo could justify aligning with some of these guys. Just mind-blowing.

Why can't Alex Ramirez follow the same path as Michael Harris and blossom at 21 yrs old?

It's about time that kind of stuff happened to us.

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

I came up with a hack to read Athletic articles for free. (I don't feel right sharing it publicly, PM me if you want to know what I did.)

Tim Britton posted an article where he speculates how the Mets can get some offense. He obviously mentions Aaron Judge.

Says Teoscar Hernández can be a trade candidate, but isn't sure that there's a deal that the Mets can put together for him.

Also:
Milwaukee's Hunter Renfroe and Baltimore's Anthony Santander trade on-base prowess for power and could probably be had in a trade this winter as they get more expensive in arbitration. Joey Gallo and Adam Duvall have tilted the scales too much toward power at the expense of any other offensive value.

Mets could also consider Trea Turner, Xander Bogaerts, Dansby Swanson, or Carlos Correa for second base, moving McNeil to the outfield.

He mentions a bunch of other players who would make less of an impact, including Michael Conforto.

Says reports indicate that Nolan Arenado is not likely to opt out of his contact with St. Louis.

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

I read that Arenado has already opted to return to the Cards.

If they keep talking about moving McNeil around, he may get pissed off enough to leave as soon as he can.

Re: Let's worry about Zimmo

As fond as I've become of Nimmo, I've seen too many guys peak in their 20s to get upset about losing out on signing a guy leaving his 20s in the rear view mirror. I'll be happy if he stays and OK if he goes, provided the Mets upgrade in the OF.

You keep Nimmo. You deal Canha if you need to, but Nimmo stays. Period. Moving on.

If their starting CF in 2023 is someone other than Nimmo or Judge I will have deemed them having fucked this up good.

I think Zimmo is going to move on. The Rockies want the local guy and Blackmon is like 40. Plus more prayer and Jesusosity out there.

I wonder if they would sign an infielder like Turner or Swanson and put him in center field? I remember how well that worked out with Juan Samuel.

Nimmo's given the former president $1500. That's really depressing, until I think that Steve Cohen has given the guy, like, millions. And Mets board member Chris Christie may be more responsible for the nightmare presidency than anybody.

I might turn down that Mets job now.

sounds like Eppler is ok with Marte moving to Center to open up RF for Judge...

If that's the case, general manager Billy Eppler has a plan. He told Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post on The Show podcast that they could slide Starling Marte over to center if they lose Nimmo. “We are comfortable with [Marte] in centerfield,” he said.
