Will Walker Walk?

He was a good pickup, good value, but will cost more $$ next year. Everybody needs a 3rd starter so there will probably be a market for the guy.

I think he's gone. A team will give him a contract of $20 million+. (Good for him.)

Re: Will Walker Walk?

Walker has a player option for $6M, which he'd be nuts to take. But he won't go anywhere unless the Mets can do better than him.

Re: Will Walker Walk?

i think that if walker is offered the QO, he'd take it, because i think he's the kind of player whose value would get sunk having that around his neck.

and while i might be hesitant to give him, say, four years at $20M, I'd give it to him for one year in a heartbeat

That seems like a very reasonable take.

Re: Will Walker Walk?

we would still need solutions for the degrom/bassitt slots in the rotation, but if $20M saves us from having to fill three slots, it's well worth it, imo, even if it might be a slight overpay. because after you get past the options that might be suitable to replace degrom/bassitt, you really don't have many good options out there to replace walker.

Not a Lucchesi fan?

It would be a lot easier to answer that if we knew if he is healthy.

And if he is, he isn't more than a # 4 or #5 starter and maybe not even as good as Walker.

He'll be one of the guys in the mix, but I wouldn't want to count on him to be in the top five on the depth chart.

Re: Will Walker Walk?

Who knows who is healthy or who will be healthy in the spring? But Lucchesi threw 12 innings down the stretch in 2022, moving among three levels, posting a 2.13 ERA, striking out 12 and walking three.

Re: Will Walker Walk?

Two-pitch starting pitchers aren't a great bet for success. Lucchesi should be no higher than 7 on the depth chart going into the season.

I'd certainly give Walker a QO and consider a longer term deal.

Re: Will Walker Walk?

Well, he's fifth now. I feel pretty comfortable that he's gonna get knocked back by a couple of guys.

There's probably also a temptation to non-tender him rather than holding the roster spot.

Re: Will Walker Walk?

I would definitely attempt to retain Walker. At the very least I would extend him a qualifying offer.

Mets decline to qualify an offer to Walker

Re: Will Walker Walk?

Right now Magill, Peterson and Lou Cheesy are 3-4-5 in the 2023 SP depth chart.

That should terrify any Mets fan.

They're all decent, or have been at times, but I much prefer that they be 6-7-8 in the pecking order. Essentially the same spots for Megill & Peterson as they had entering this past season.

I'd be okay if they were 5-6-7. The Mets will definitely add (or retain) some starters between now and April. The who and the how will be among the big stories of the winter.

I'm not easily terrified. There's a whole lot of offseason in front of them, and those three and the 1-2 are still way ahead of where most other teams are.

Also, don't sleep on your Syracuse buddy José Butto.

Re: Will Walker Walk?

might just be my perception but it seems like Walker relies on the defense behind him (particularly the infield defense)...with shifts going away next season, does that make him more vulnerable as a pitcher?
