Will you be watching any of the World Cup soccer tournament?

Are there any teams or players you will be following or rooting for?

I got to cover one of the World Cup matches in 1994, between the United States and Switzerland. It was a lot more fun to watch than I expected. A lot more fun.

I can't say I follow it super closely, but I check in on how Team USA is doing.

No great interest.

But if some highlights come on the news while I'm waiting for reports on sports I care about, I won't turn them off.

But I did watch the Grey Cup (Canadian Football League championship) game last night and it was very entertaining- a one point win for the Toronto Argonauts over the defending champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers . Love those team nicknames.

The Quarterback for Toronto was Chad Kelly. He is the nephew of ex-NFL QB Jim Kelly, who never won a Super Bowl in four games while with the Buffalo Bills.

Between the location's time difference and the whole sleeziness of the location selection process in the first place, it's not going to be a must watch.

But I'll likely check in here and there and will do the DVR thing to catch today's U.S. opener.

Re: 2022 World Cup

The USMNT is weird to root for. I like (most of) the players a lot. And we have good young stars at massive clubs - Sergino Dest was a starter at Barcelona and is now at AC Milan. Wes McKinnie with Juventus. Pulisic (gag) at Chelsea ,and more young talent sprinkled throughout Europe (not to mention Kellyn Acosta from LAFC THE BIGGEST CLUB IN THE WORLD!!!). But the culture around the USMNT can get pretty MAGA. "Build the wall" chants against Mexico and everyone dressed like they're about to storm the capital. I just never want to see any of our fans on TV ever.

On the other side, an Ecuadorian friend invited us over for a watch party for the first match against Qatar. It was a room full of Ecuador flags, people dressed in yellow singing and chanting. The WC means so much more to so many other places than it does here. THAT was fucking awesome.

Re: 2022 World Cup

Pretty disappointing [CROSSOUT]tie[/CROSSOUT] draw considering how much territorial advantage the U.S. had over the first 45 minutes. The game-tying PK was totally

deserved and I'm not sure the announcers said enough about what an overly aggressive and bone-headed move that was by the U.S. defender.

I mean, they did say it was unnecessary but did so quite gently as if trying not to ruffle feathers.

The immediate outcome is to think that this puts the US & Wales into a tie-breaker situation to decide England and Who? move on from the

group (England thumped Iran in the other group game). Not sure what the tie-breaker scenario is but if it's whose Prince most recently

graduated to King then we're in fuckin' trouble.

Plus ... Ecuadoran victory!

The whole CONCACAF thing is weird. They get 3 1/2 (is that right?) qualifying slots fro the finals. The US and Canada have resources to train a top squad that their other-sports-loving countries are modestly curious about. Most everybody else in the region lacks the resources but is crazy for the game.

Mexico is a little of both. So for most Cups, CONCACAF is represented by the US, Mexico, and 41 nations and statelets fighting for the right to knock out Canada (which almost always happens).

But that's typically 41 teams vying for 1 1/2 slots, about 35 or 36 of them coming from nations where fútbol is #1. So much passion and work for a mostly predetermined outcome.

I liked Red Smith's comment better: I'd give you the final score of today's soccer game ... but there wasn't one.

Current standings in the group

England - 4 pts

Iran - 3

USA - 2

Wales - 1

So it's win vs Iran and they're moving ahead to the knockout round, but another draw or a loss and they're not.

England and Iran both will move ahead with a win OR a draw.

Wales needs a win by multiple goals (like 6 or 7) vs their eastern border neighbor.

Not sure who the color guy for the U.S. games is; Stu something-er-other who I assume is a former player.

But, unlike most televised sporting events, these games don't show the announcers every few minutes (or at all) so all I can do

is hear his voice and, while he sounds knowledgable about the sport and all, to my ears he also sounds exactly like former tennis

star and current sports media voice Mary Carillo. I know it's NOT Mary Carillo but without the visual I have to keep reminding

myself that it's not. Not sure if I'm insulting Carillo or this guy more by conflating the two, but I can't help it.

The French sounding trio of Hernandez, Greizmann, and Mbappe pulled out a win over Denmark earlier today.

The Danish goalie looks like he was recruited directly off a Viking ship ... or maybe like Syndergaard's cousin.

And then Messi broke a scoreless draw late to save Argentina's tournament (and his own skin?) in their 2 - 0

win over Mexico.

That's how the rule works. Ok when the ball is kicked = OK.

It was really close. The VAR interpretations with elbows dangling over imaginary lines make it all the more difficult to call (and IMO not in the spirit of the offside rule).

On the offsides rule, and having nothing to do with this game specifically:

While I'm not one of those Americans who think soccer would be a better watch if a typical game were more like 8 - 7*, I've long thought the best way to 'open up' the

game a wee bit would be a slight liberalization of the offsides rule. In hockey the offensive player is considered Onsides if any part of him is on the correct side of

the line while soccer goes to the far extreme where it seems that if the left toenail is Offsides then the play is whistled dead (it may not be quite that drastic but it's

close ... and, yes, I realize that one is a physical line vs a moving one so not a perfect analogy here.

Not sure how the wording of the rule actually reads but, jeez, when a player is leaning ahead of the defenseman or even just has an elbow sticking out it gives the impression

that the lords of the game are trying their best to intentionally stifle scoring chances at every possible opportunity. 'When in doubt blow the whistle' doesn't make for a very

good marketing slogan.

* I once examined the EPL [CROSSOUT]standings[/CROSSOUT] table a few years back and added up the total goals scored at that point of the season.

By chance there happened to have been exactly 100 league games played to that point so it made the math easy, and the total goals came in at just a hair under 300

which was a big enough sample size to say that they were averaging three combined goals per game. Personally, I'd be happy to see that number creep up a bit closer

to, say, five (iow, a typical game would be more like 3 - 2 rather than 2 - 1) which I think would benefit the game while still retaining the importance that each actual

score represents and do so without fundamentally changing the game.

If GKR were calling futbol, the VAR interpretations for offside would drive them fucking nuts. An interpretation of offside that's more in line with what officials really tried to enforce before VAR would be great. That said, I watch a ton of the game and don't think people are calling offside more now and don't think the game necessarily needs any 'opening up'.

I agree with you. Low scoring has been one reason Americans have given for not loving soccer as much as the rest of the world. If relaxing the off sides rule would increase scoring, I wonder if the US soccer league might experiment with it for some games to determine if it would really help.

Re: 2022 World Cup

The NASL did experiment with the offsides rule, not enforcing the rule unless the offense had advanced the ball past the equivalent of the 35-yard-line, rather than mid-field as is the international standard. It was a long time ago.

FIFA pointedly refused the league membership in their federation until they brought the rule back in line with everybody else.

I think offsides rules are silly in in futbol and silly in hockey. If a guy wants to goal-hang, let him goal-hang. If that makes him a selfish gloryboy, then let him show himself as such.

It's just so much exercise in policing nuances in positioning. I feel the same way, clearly, about the shift in baseball. The solution is take advantage of the extreme positioning and counterattack, not to to point to the referees and complain about where the guy is standing, while viewers watch 20 angles to determine to the inch whether the man was standing in legal space or illegal space.

While I'm at it, I might as well argue for the tossing of basketball's three-second rule, too. I'm not sure that's a very good idea, but I'm not letting a little foolish consistency stop me.

When you see the accurate crossing passes by the Dutch (helped out by the targets being un-marked) it makes scoring in

soccer looks so easy and you wonder why there isn't more of it. But of course it's not that easy. That 46th minute goal

was obviously a killer.

The main complaint I've heard of this USMNT coach has been his reluctance to go to young Reyna more often (only a

handful of minutes vs England prior to today) amid rumors that the two are feuding over something.

I take it that what the team also seems to be missing is a finisher up front - more or less the role Clint Dempsey used to fill. Three goals

scored in four games -- even while allowing only four against the better competition in the world -- is rarely going to get you very far.

But they were among the youngest teams in the tourney so that's ... something.

1 - 0 Argentina over Australia as they near the end of the first half.

It's funny that, in a tournament that has so many commenters talking about upsets, four traditional fútbol powerhouses nations — Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil, and England — are in the final eight. And Portugal and France are pretty close to that category also. The only darkhorses remaining are Morocco and Croatia.

On the other hand, the Croats can play anything, can't they?

All of that is wild. Explains why Berhalter never used him. I guess his comments were supposed to be off the record, but gotta say it seems pretty foolish that'd speak out about a "problem player" anyway. Can't imagine that will be a tick in the "good" box when the brass is reevaluating him.

You probably meant "Hope Nimmo gets home safe from Qatar." We're way ahead of you. We flew to Buenos Aires to celebrate with the locals. Nimmo couldn't find any whores in Qatar. Death penalties and beheadings and public stonings has a way of putting the kibosh on the world's oldest profession. And besides, Nimmo was worried that he'd be noticed and that then, the King Sheikh would make Nimmo wear a crazy cape. Anyways, here we are, having the best steaks in the world and they're bigger than your head. And all for pennies with the American dollar exchange rate over here.
