Nady moved ahead of Floyd because of Floyd's slump?

Also a lefty starting tonight.

It seems like they can't come up with any 2-out, RISP hits lately.

Too many jobs half done.

Happens again in the second. Wheee.

I wonder what the record for most men LOB without scoring a run is?

Gwreck
May 04 2006 07:51 PM

Single, walk, single gets us the bases loaded with no outs. Time to cash them in.

A run on a walk!

Gwreck
May 04 2006 08:10 PM

...but that's it. 7 men left on in first 3 innings.

Fortunately, Glavine is sharp tonight. 7Ks in first 4 innings.

Aflac trivia: Who was the last Met to hit a walkoff homer in the twefth inning or later.

Dumb guess: Ron Gardenhire.

Nymr83
May 04 2006 08:13 PM

nobody out bases loaded and we can't bring a run home? thats bad baseball. (yes i know Nady walked in a run, but after that it was still the same situation, you gotta get more there)

9 K's in 5 innings. When did Glavine become a strikeout pitcher??

Gwreck
May 04 2006 08:25 PM

Intentional walk to the 8th hitter works.

Bothers me slightly, though, as Glavine didn't have any walks up to that point. Reminds me of an idea I always meant to pitch to STATS, Inc., that they should recalculate WHIP as Unintentional Walks + Hits + HBP.

Craig Wilson batting with bases loaded thanks to TWO errors and a single.

Correct answer to the Aflac question is indeed Agbayani...but as for regular-season, that requires going back aways -- last time that happened was 1996.

97 pitches for Glavine through 6.

OE: And with the Woodward single, he stays in to bunt him over.

Good time at Big Shea tonite. I've now seen two Met games this year and seem Tom F. Glavine strike out 21 guys and X Nady hit two balls a combined 850 feet. Holy shit!

Wright's single to drive in the second run sorta indicated to me he's getting out of the woods offensively. It wasn't a pretty hit but you could see him adjust mid swing and will that thing through the hole.

Sent love to Sanchez.

Fat chick in Jeter shirt cheering strikes against the Mets went home unhappy.

10 games over 500 for the first time in six years.

The thing is that he wasn't whining, as so many people seem to accuse anybody who responds to boos (as if provoking a response isn't part of the point. He accepted full responsiblity for his performance, knew full well how his salarly contextualized his performance, stated that he was beating up on himself more than they were, but... it was a miserable time to be so hated when all he wanted to do was perform well, and the negativity of the atmosphere was brutal.

Elster88
May 05 2006 09:47 AM

He also said something along the lines of "you can't understand how it feels until it happens to you". A comment like that also, especially if some fool "reporter" takes it out of context, comes off as whiny. But it really wasn't whiny and makes sense to me. I hope to never have tens of thousands of people booing the hell out of me.

I also liked the point that he made that you have the highs aloing with the lows, when you do something good and everyone loves you. In '02 (I think it was his first year with the team), I was at a game where he was getting booed the entire time. Bottom of the ninth, he hits a three run homer to tie it. (I think it was three run anyway, maybe not.) Top of the tenth when he runs out to right, everyone in the seats out there stood up for him and was cheering. I was jealous of that, I still want to be a major league ballplayer.

I agree with him, it's easier to handle the boos when you know you can get the cheers too. Problem is, if you're some poor bastard like Doug Sisk who has lost the ability to earn cheers, you're in for a rough year.

Edit: As long as we're speaking about handsome men in other threads, I'm Lee Mazzilli.

Agreed. He knew he was making an outrageous sum of money and he knew he stunk. He knew he deserved the boos from the fans, said it wasn't pleasent but accepted it and held no grudges against the fans nor did he act petulant towards them.

That's how it should be.

"What are you guys talking about?"

Burnitz was interviewed on that 'Daily News Live' show yesterday and they showed a few clips of it during the game last night, mainly the part where they asked him about the pressures of playing in NYC when things aren't going well.

Johnny Dickshot
May 05 2006 10:09 AM

Watching Burnitz struggle in 02 was hard on us too.

I like how he flaunts everything they told you in Little League and routinely swings with one hand.

Edgy DC
May 05 2006 10:18 AM

I went looking for the interview, but MLB.tv, despite giving me the Metscast last night, is giving me the Buccast on replay. It was about the sixth seventh inning, for those of you who can get a SNY or Tivo replay.

Glavine was just wicked last night. I don't get it. Since he got here, I looked at him and Trax as guys without an "out-pitch," so they had to be perfect in speed and location, because they didn't have a pitch that was so hard to hit they could let it rip when they were behind the count, or have somebody desperately defending against when they were ahead.

It seems like he does now. I think and hope maybe Pedro is infectious.

Maybe Pedro can start breathing on Zambrano.

Darling made a point that bringing in Julio to finish the game may be a boost to his confidence. He closes out a shutout, gets to be involved in a win, and shakes hands as if he is the closer. Interesting point. I hope there is some carry-over.

The two questions in that last paragraph (especially the first in that couple) is the one I'm most curious about finding the answer to.
OTOH, we've had this back and forth before.

Yes we have beaten the crap out of this argument but I'll humor you.

If he realizes already how badly he is performing, and is beating himself up more than you ever could, what on earth is the point of your booing?

Maybe the point is expressing frustration and reminded the player just how blessed he is. The player is making $100 million no matter how bad he's doing. Average Joe is busting his ass every day to pay his bills. If Joe doesn't perform Joe doesn't get paid. If the player doesn't perform he still buys another Bentley in the offseason. I'll admit that a lot of it is jealousy. Fans think that if someone is being so well paid to play a game - no matter how poorly they play - that it is unfair, and this is how they express that. In the real world no matter how hard you work if you are not successful you don't get paid. Not necessarily so in sports.

Isn't it (booing) really just to make yourself (the booer) feel better at the expense of how the player is feeling?

Booing doesn't make me feel better or worse. It's just an expression. I for one think that if a player has the balls to sign a contract like that then he is making the statement that he has the intestinal fortitude to overcome any sad feelings he might get if he is booed because he is not performing up to the standards set by him when he signed that deal. If he doesn't have that kind of grit then too bad for his feelings - he shouldn't have signed that deal. He's still going to be retired by 40 and set up future generations of his family for the rest of their lives. Kinda hard to feel bad for a guy like that.
