Basics:

Record: 8-17, 8.5 GB
Lost 7 of 8

1-5 vs NYM in 2006

Pitching Matchups:

Monday

WSH Ramon Ortiz, RHP (0-3, 6.75) @ NYM Victor Zambrano, RHP (1-2, 9.64)
From MLB.com:
Ortiz will face the Mets for the third time this season. He is 0-2 with an 8.18 ERA against them. In his last start, Ortiz went deep into the game and saved some of the relievers. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits against the Reds.

Five innings, three runs; five innings, seven runs and then four innings, five runs. Zambrano's season is moving in the wrong direction. Not good, to poor, to worse. Now he misses the Braves, the team that inflicted his first loss this season, but instead he pitches -- with seven-days rest -- at home. And Shea has been unkind to him. And another start like the one Sunday in San Diego, and his ERA won't fit in a three-digit format.

Tuesday

WSH Michael O'Connor, LHP (0-1, 0.00) @ NYM John Maine, RHP (0-0, -.--)

From MLB.com:

Scouting Report:
O'Connor will face the Mets for the first time in his career. Last Thursday, he made his Major League debut against the Cardinals and gave up three runs -- none earned -- in five innings. He walked four batters and struck out two. He was pushed into service because of a forearm injury to John Patterson.

With Brian Bannister disabled, the Mets need another starter. They haven't announced their choice. But Maine, the pitcher they obtained with Jorge Julio in the Kris Benson trade, seems likely. GM Omar Minaya likes him, and Maine, pitching for the Triple A Norfolk Tides, already is on the 40-player roster. Fellow Tides pitchers Jeremi Gonzalez and Jose Lima are not. Maine gained his first victory Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowing five hits and a walk against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He has a 1-3 record and 2.63 ERA in four starts. The Tides had scored one run in each loss.

Injuries n' stuff

OF Ryan Church may not play with flu-like symptoms. No word on whether it's the flu or only flu-like.

3B Ryan Zimmerman will be out because he's traveling to attend his grandmother's funeral. Billy Wagner doesn't mind.

RP Felix Rodriguez will begin serving a 3 game suspension ordered for hitting Paul LoDuca in the Pedro beanballish game.

C Robert Fick is out with an elbow injury.

Bottom Line
The Mets should wipe the floor with these guys. They're struggling, have injuries and the best thing you can say about them is that they are happy to be on the road (7-10 record vs. 1-7 at home).

More as I think of it.

Way to mark.

From the WFAN Pre-game show:

Zimmerman will be back for Tuesday's game.

Willie officially announces John Maine as Tuesday's starter. No word on the corresponding roster move but logical assumption is that Victor D. is headed back south.

Feliciano may have options.

Church is one of those funny cases. He gets cut at the end of spring for golden-boy prospect Brandon Watson. He goes down, and rather than making a case for the foolishness of his exile, he hits in the .130s. It doesn't matter, becasue Watson doesn't hit either, and Church gets recalled, based on his past big-league success, and hits a homer his first game back. The dude is slugging .659 since his return. I wouldn't be shocked if Frank Robinson asked them to speed up the funeral for the team's sake.

Maine has allowed more than one earned run just once.
