Yo La Tengo covers "Meet the Mets"

Apparently in response to pledges for WFMU, they take requests, and somebody requested "Meet the Mets," which they performed.

A friend just emailed it to me...the questions are:

1. Newsworthy or just news to me?

2. Anybody need the MP3?

I was searching for a recording of the original MtM song a couple of weeks ago around when "OTOT" was released and stumbled across a streaming (RealMedia) version of Yo La Tengo's here: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2006/04/yo_la_tengo_is_.html

I was happy to see an MP3 version posted yesterday on one of the prominent Mets blogs as well.

Great -- maybe the Mets can get them to perform the National Anthem before a game.

Is there a glockenspiel in there?

Good Yo La harmonies, but they left out the butcher/baker bridge.

Awesome! One of my favorite bands + one of my favorite songs. Can't wait to hear it.

I like it for a one-off permromance. It's just a hasty and incomplete arrangement.

Press release from today.

Note it's not a "Our Team Our Time" singalong. Edgy wins.:

]Mets introduce "Meet the Mets Sing-A-Long" for 2006 home games at Shea

FLUSHING, -- The New York Mets today announced the launch of the "Meet the Mets Sing-A-Long" during home games throughout the 2006 season at Shea Stadium. The new Sing-A-Long will debut tomorrow night as the Mets begin a three-game homestand against the Atlanta Braves.
"Meet the Mets has been the original, often imitated, never duplicated Mets' official song and anthem for more than four decades," said Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations, New York Mets. "We've had great fan response to other Mets songs throughout the years but thought that the time was right to do something new with Meet the Mets as part of our expanding in-stadium entertainment programming. We simply are responding to the outpouring of love for this Mets classic."

The "Meet the Mets Sing-A-Long" will take place once per game at various times during games this season. The Mets have produced a new video that combines live footage of fans, taped player images and highlights, interspersed with animation to introduce the lyrics of the song for a new generation of fans to join in by "following the bouncing head" of Mr. Met.

Meet the Mets, the official song of the New York Mets (attached) written by Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz, debuted to the public on March 9, 1963.

Maybe "Our Team, Our Time" was a ploy to get people a-yearnin' for "Meet the Mets."

Kind of like those "New Coke" conspiracies.
