With the Braves 8 games behind in third place and the Phillies lapping at our heels are we still content to be happy with Mets win, Braves loss, Yankees loss?

Screw the Phillies, stay with tradition.

I've long been an advocate of dropping the Braves from Triple Happiness. They don't matter that much to me. Last year (or the year before) I posted a picture of three happy amphibians on a day when the Mets won, Yankees lost, and Red Sox won (when the Yanks and Sox were battling for a playoff spot) and I was severely chastised.

You want to celebrate when other teams lose go right ahead - but "TH" was set-up to commemorate a specific set of circumstances and shall remain such AT LEAST until the string of 1st place/non-1st place finishes changes.
This has come up every year as soon as the Braves have a bad 2-week stretch and look like they're not going to contend ... and then we're looking up at them as we celebrate maybe 2 THs per month.

Until the division title monkey is off the Mets backs, gotta root for Braves to
lose and celebrate when the original three things happen.

I vote for Tradition.

Even if we're happy with a different outcome, Triple Happiness has a specific meaning.

Yancy is keeping a count of the magic number and WP wants to remove the Braves from Triple Happiness in May. I'm surprised the SBS Princess hasn't been driven to baseball therapy yet.

That was a fun identity. I loved my Powerpuff Girls Princess avatar <g>

In what other sports forum would you come across the word curmudgeon? What happened to the Scrabble thread?

So far it's 10-1-1.

I was the one vote for PRACTICALITY. Anyone want to confess to being the CURMUDGEON?

I'm guessing that was Elster.

Not guilty.

Tradition.

Baseball can't be about reason.

Until proven otherwise, the road to the NL East title still runs through Atlanta in my mind. Triple Happiness will always hold it's traditional meaning until the Braves are toppled from their perrenial perch as division champions.

I like tradition too, but this particular one never meant anything to me.

I've never been a Braves hater. I was rooting for them big time in 1991 when they were a Cinderella team, and that carried over for me at least through the 1993 playoffs. And again in the 1996 World Series. And again in the 1999 World Series. So I've spent enough time rooting for the Braves to win that I never managed to form any particular dislike of them.

Never really been a Braves hater myself. My only problem with them is their habit of beating the Mets and consistently, year after year, winning the division.

I also voted for practicality. When we're chasing the Braves, of course it makes sense to root for them to lose.

Right now, and especially this week, practicality dictates that as long as we're winning, who cares what the Braves do? They're in third place after all...

I'm torn between tradition and practicality, but one should always side with tradition.

Actually I was just curious if Triple Happiness was rooted in Braves hating or actual standings. I like tradition too & the Braves losses counting toward Triple Happiness until their divisional crown is usurped sounds good to me. Personally one day I'd like to see a strong 3-way rivalry between the Mets, Phillies and Nationals but I won't hold my breath. I voted curmudgeon just to be a curmudgeon.

I side with wanting to not even to THINK about the Braves untill we play them again in late July. In other words I don't want to see the Braves hovering on the fringe of the Mets-Phillies race in August, which is where they tend to make their push (see last year) towards yet another divisional title.

Wild Card will probably again be from the Central, so thats why it's important for the Mets-Phils to get the Braves so far in back that they can't knaw their way back into the thick of the race like they've done year after year, after year, after year...

"Actually I was just curious if Triple Happiness was rooted in Braves hating or actual standings."

It was pretty much based on the fact that the two longest division streaks are owned by the in-town rival and in-division rival making losses by them the most likely to make you happy.
This was Dickshot's baby so the choice should really fall to him - but it was created with specifically those 3 teams in mind and I feel very strongly that, until at least one of the 3 teams involved breaks a streak, that those should remain the official 'TH' teams ... even though I realize that there may come some late season games this year when we might be in position to root for Atlanta over say the Phils depending on how the standing stand.

P.S. I've never been a Brave-hater either; now them MFY on the other hand ...

Ill go with whatever makes the board happy.

I just see a triple happiness thread and scramble for a pic to post.
I never even knew what the threads were exactly all about, lol, though I did pick up clues along the way.

Things change though, and the Braves may not always be our nemisis.
I remember the days when the Cubs were our #1 rivals.
In a pefect world the Cubs would still be in our division and the Phils would be our #1 rivals.
.....in my perfect world, anyway.

lets not disrespect the braves just yet... we should add the phillies in as Quadruple happiness though!

Yup.

Phils (or current closest rival in standings) = fourth leg of quadruple.

I don;t know why this dumb topic gets so much attention.

As a room I suppose we try and honor the tradition but if the results don't do it for you, you're not obligated to participate. Same goes for me. For a while I was more excited over a Red Sox win than a Braves loss and that was the final piece until you guys reminded me that I invented it so as to celebrate Braves loss, MFY loss and Met win.
