Just a special "moment" during a special year. Big comback against a top of the line starter

I never noticed it before, but you could see in the clip where he shouts GO! and waves to the baserunner in front of him to keep going. So he did want to run that out. I found that interesting..

What a great find. It's amazing how many of those great moments came in '99. That really was a special year. I don't give a shit they didn't win it all, that was one of my favorite Mets teams ever.

Man, been a long time since I saw the Lenny HR. Dave Smith looks like a pitcher in a 45 and older beer softball league.

Check out the Carter hit a few days later, Charlie Kerfield looks even worse!

Diamond Dad May 10 2006 01:07 PM Lenny's homer |
Great stuff! I remember Lenny after that walk-off home run saying that he had never, ever, had a game-winning homer. "not even in strat-o-matic"
|
Elster88 May 10 2006 01:08 PM |
Nope. He said he did have one in strat-o-matic "where you roll dice".

Here's another, just for Elster:

Man that guy's voice is annoying.
|
Elster88 May 10 2006 02:06 PM |
|
After 15 seconds I could tell that wasn't going to be funny. What happened at the end?
|
Willets Point May 10 2006 02:09 PM |
It continued to by unfunny. Just a guy whining endlessly in a spastic voice.

I couldn't find the thread I started called "Our Favorite Videos" or some such that had Wright's catch. If it's gone we could use this thread for clips and videos.

It may have happened many times in the early 20th century, before the scoring rule was changed. I read that Babe Ruth lost one home run because of a rule in effect then. Let's say the score was tied and the batter came up in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run on third. If the batter hit a home run, he only got credited for a single (the minimum hit necessary to score the winning baserunner(s). Even though home runs were hit with less frequency in those days, I'd have to guess it happened more than once. Later

Roughly this many times. I think something specific like that where the guy got mobbed before finishing his trot might be a lot rarer. Even where fans gave run on the field (Aaron, Chambliss, etc.), they've let the guy touch home plate.

Thanks for verifying my suspicions, Wolf.

They discovered those "lost" HRs in the late '60s when they first started to computerize baseball's records. That uncovering, seeing as how it came just when Aaron was approaching Ruth's record, sparked a mini-debate over whether the Babe should get credited with his 715th HR and move Hank's target ever so slightly.
