I was bequeathed sponsorship of SMB by Soupy, so i offer a top 10 that splits evenly between their pre-EAGLE classic bluesy style and their post-EAGLE pop hits, in an effort to represent both my and Soupy's lists: LIVING IN THE USA GANGSTER OF LOVE SPACE COWBOY YOUR SAVING GRACE DON'T LET NOBODY TURN YOU AROUND THE JOKER FLY LIKE AN EAGLE TAKE THE MONEY & RUN ROCKIN ME JET AIRLINER and so we do hereby call out Herr Dikkshott's garage band, Tom Pity and the Fartmakers. note: i have no idea how to link the actual songs to this list, so if any administrator does, and feels like doing it, then thanks.

"Stop Draggin'" has been used, but couldn't hold the line against "U Got the Look" by Prince and the Revolution with Sheena Easton. It remains on the bench anxious for another go. "Refugee" may eventually need a blow.

Linking, Norrin, is easy. Here is Steve Miller Band: The Best of 1968-1973. It's got "Living in the USA," "Gangster of Love," "Space Cowboy," "Don't Let Nobody Turn You Around," "Your Saving Grace," and "The Joker." Here is Steve Miller Band: The Best of 1974-1978. It has "Fly Like an Eagle," "Take the Money and Run," "Rock n' Me," and "Jet Airliner."

Starting with "The Joker," the Steve Miller Band sucked hard enough to empty the air from large rooms. Any songs before that are pretty good. Petty is consistently mediocre, whereas Miller went from excellent to terrible.

Win for Tom "Space Cowboy" vs. "Don't Come Around Here No More" --Steve "Your Saving Grace" vs. "Don't Do Me Like That" --Nice mellow little potsmoking number from Steve, but Tom wins. Tom "Don't Let Nobody Turn You Around" vs. "Listen to Her Heart" --Sad how SMB went from bluesy protest songs to “Jungle Love” in the course of 6 years. Tom in a close one. "The Joker" vs. "Restless (with Carl Perkins)" --Steve "Fly Like an Eagle" vs. "Here Comes My Girl" --Steve "Take the Money and Run" vs. "Refugee" --Dumb song by Steve, but perfectly enjoyable. Tie. "Rock 'N Me" vs. "The Waiting" --Rock n Me is an even dumber song, ripped off from “All Right Now” by Free. The Waiting ain’t my favorite but Tom wins here. "Jet Airliner" vs. "Even the Losers" --Strong victory for Steve. Love this song. Tom 5, Steve 5 Different matchups/selections could have turned this one either way.

"Living in the USA" vs. "Thing About You" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "Gangster of Love" vs. "American Girl" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers pounds the giggling vocalist against the ropes. "Space Cowboy" vs. "Don't Come Around Here No More" Two spacey songs. I can dance to Miller’s. Cool use of tuplets in that song also. The Steve Miller Band. "Your Saving Grace" vs. "Don't Do Me Like That" They may have had twenty-something members, but there’s a distinct buzz to a Steve Miller harmony line just like there’s a buzz to a Jeff Lynne harmony line, even back in this one. Nonetheless, Benmont Tench’s soaring organ trumps his groovy counterpart from the Miller Band. wp, might i suggest in the future that you not post a running total while the voting is still open? if you know that a band you like is down by 9 as the deadline approaches, you might be tempted to give them a last-minute 10-0 vote that you might not otherwise give it based on the matchups, just to put your fave over the top. i'm not saying anybody would or has done thist, but why tempt anyone? there is no upside to posting that info prematurely. Never count your chips while your sittin at the table there'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

I'll agree there. It's not that just the notion of yielding to temptation, but just having the total hanging over one can cloud one's judgment as they vote. If we look at the first 5 songs as "classic" Miller and the second five songs as "sell-out" Miller, it is clear that he was wise to sell out.
