Great matchup. "Black" vs. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Pearl Jam. "SMTS" is a classic in every right, but "Black" just wails. "Alive" vs. "Come As You Are" - Pearl Jam. I always thought "Come As You Are" was really much ado about nothing. I've never enjoyed it. "Jeremy" vs. "Pennyroyal Tea" - Pearl Jam. Really? Ugly matchup for Nirvana. "Even Flow" vs. "All Apologies" - Nirvana. This one could have gone either way, but the way Nirvana ripped "Apologies" a new ass on MTV Unplugged did it for me. "Porch" vs. "Polly" - Pearl Jam. Again, I look to MTV Unplugged for inspiration on the vote; PJ nailed this f*$ker. "Why Go?" vs. "Negative Creep" - Pearl Jam Again, a bleh Nirvana song. "State of Love & Trust" vs. "Rape Me" - Wow, I hate ties. Great story behind Rape Me: The band wanted to play it at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, but MTV demanded they play a hit instead. They played "Lithium," but not before strumming "Rape Me"'s opening chords, which almost resulted in the performance being taken off the air. Okay, I'll vote. Pearl Jam. "Elderly Woman" vs. "Breed" - Pearl Jam. The first two PJ albums just kick my ass up and down. "Better Man" vs. "In Bloom" - Pearl Jam. Two great pop singles. "Corduroy" vs. "Lithium" - Nirvana. Not as close as I expected. Honestly, most of Nirvana is noise to me. I like a little more melody. Gotta stay away from the mid-period PJ stuff, which you did, and that's an easy 8-2 win. It's often said that Nirvana killed hair metal; I don't agree. They were part of the scene that helped, but we rocked the hell out of "Teen Spirit" just as much as we did Poison. So it's all good in my book. The new PJ album is pretty damn good, methinks. It's not "Ten" -- and I know they can never match that -- but there are some great songs on there.

LA is full of guys who were playing with Persian Dynamite or somebody who had just gotten off a tour with Warrant, had their second album in the can, and were ready to explode when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" broke, and the A&R guys at the label just stopped calling. The A&R guys that did still foster these bands would've lost their jobs.

Ah, heck, Pearl Jam. "PrT" keeps landing on the same note. "Even Flow" vs. "All Apologies" Nirvana "Porch" vs. "Polly" Two forgettable songs here, Tie. "Why Go?" vs. "Negative Creep" Both songs sound like the guitarist is borrowing from the Edge for an album track that'll cook live. Pearl Jam going for an arenae rocker and Nirvana for a mosh pit exploder. Gimme Nirvana. Neither is a masterpiece, though. "State of Love & Trust" vs. "Rape Me" Nirvana "Elderly Woman Behind . . ." vs. "Breed" Sure. Let Pearl Jam do Kris Kristofferson country. I'll give them that. "Better Man" vs. "In Bloom" Nirvana.
