Smashing Pumpkins 8:2 Aerosmith

Before I get underway, let me just say that I don't get the Smashing Pumpkins. Never did. What was their deal? Now I never really studied 'em, cuz to me most of it comes off as overproduced, overemoted, fuzzy, plodding pop songs that you can't dance to. Did they have anything to say? Were they even good players? If I recall they had a few different drummers and the singer is nearly unbearable. Awful band name and stupid album names too. Did the world change one iota when they broke up? Who are their fans? What is their deal?

Onto the contest...

"Disarm" vs. "Dream On"
--Keep dreaming, Pumpkin. Aerosmith.

"1979" vs. "Come Together"
-- I suppose '79 is OK. Don't know what he's saying, though I'd guess something dramatic. Not impressed with Aerosmith's cover here, so a win for the Smashers

"Cherub Rock" vs. "Toys In The Attic"
--No contest. Aerosmith

"Today" vs. "Walk This Way"
--Not today. Aerosmith

"Bullet With Butterfly Wings" vs. "Sweet Emotion"
--Yeah yeah, we get it. You're a rat in a cage with RAGE! Ooooh, scary. Shut up. Aerosmith

"Tonight, Tonight" vs. "Train Kept A Rollin"
--Yawn. I'll give it to the Smashers.

"Zero" vs. "Mama Kin"
--Faced with a choice of two songs, I usually pick the one with the melody. Aerosmith.

"Ava Adore" vs. "Cryin'"
--Hobson's Choice. Aerosmith. Feel dirty.

"Drown" vs. "Love In An Elevator"
--When mass-produced latterday Aerosmith songs kick your butt, you know your band is in trouble.

"Silverf*ck" vs. "What It Takes"
--This contest is killing me. Lame power ballad vs. whiny whispered distortionfest. Uh... Pumpkins, I guess.

Aerosmith 7, Smashing Pumpkins 3

I didn't come here to bury the pumpkins but a little explanation I suppose is necessary.

"Disarm" vs. "Dream On" - Can't punish Aerosmith for classic rock radio ruining this song. It was great the first 500 times.

"1979" vs. "Come Together" - ...but Aerosmith has no excuse for this one. Smashing Pumpkins

"Cherub Rock" vs. "Toys In The Attic" - Tie

"Today" vs. "Walk This Way" - Aerosmith

"Bullet With Butterfly Wings" vs. "Sweet Emotion" - Aerosmith

"Tonight, Tonight" vs. "Train Kept A Rollin" - Aerosmith

"Zero" vs. "Mama Kin" - Tie

"Ava Adore" vs. "Cryin'" - Aerosmith Bonus points (not factored in the vote) for the music video.

"Drown" vs. "Love In An Elevator" - One of modern (ie. post-rehab) Aerosmith's best.

"Silverf*ck" vs. "What It Takes - Smashing Pumpkins

Aerosmith takes it, 7-3. My initial though is that this would've been closer, but good matchups for Joe, Steve, et.al.

Look, I enjoy the Pumpkins. But they had one solid album, one monstrous double album with way too much filler, and then started taking themselves waaaaaaaay too seriously. I don't see that this is really a contest. 10-0 America's Greatest Rock Band.

FWIW, I matched up "Come Together" where I did because it's the closest good song to the year 1979 that they recorded. (Those were ugly times for Aerosmith.)

Much as I'd like to vote in this one, my kids were little during the heyday of Smashing Pumpkins and consequently I paid no attention to them whatsoever.

(on edit): It was the Pumpkins I paid no attention to, I did pay attention to the kids.

Will no one defend the Pumpkins against the charges above of being overdramatic, overproduced nonrocknrollers, or are the allegations true and that's just what we American kids like?

The Pumpkins rocked! I did see them get blown off of Randalls Island by the Beastie Boys during Lollapalooza a decade or so ago. There's my next band, the Beasties.

I don't understand the Aerostmith love. I like Sweet Emotion and Dream On as much as the next guy, but the stuff after the late-80's comeback is no better than any other music coming out at the time. Is Love in an Elevator any different than what Poison or Motley Crue were doing? And then the 90's hit and they started making mediocre ballads with popular videos.

This is the first contest I've scored in Aerosmith's column, pretty sure.* I'm really curious though -- what made the Pumpkins good?

*-HUGE bonus of the BLC: Scoring victories for bands you don't necessarily like.

These bands have a lot of similarities. Both classic rock-style bands recycling the innovations of better bands that preceeded them and surfing on the zeitgeist of their times. They're both ok but not good bands. The Pumpkins win my ballot merely because they were the band of my time.

Smashing Pumpkins turn into, well, pumpkins at the hands of Aerosmith by a 32-28 score.

"Disarm" vs. "Dream On"
Pumpkins. It's not as if "Dream On" isn't overblown and overproduced also.

"1979" vs. "Come Together"
Pumpikins. I have a soft spot for "Come Together." Not that soft.

"Cherub Rock" vs. "Toys In The Attic"
Two songs that are all about the riffs. Edge to Aerosmith.

"Today" vs. "Walk This Way"
Weenie Nirvana wannabe song up against a band that, whatever their faults, we're confident in who they were. Aerosmith.

"Bullet With Butterfly Wings" vs. "Sweet Emotion"
"Bullet" has a nice bass riff but it's no "Sweet Emotion." That mosquito voice really indicts it. Aerosmith.

"Tonight, Tonight" vs. "Train Kept A Rollin"
A prettier "Tonight Tonight" than Genesis vs. the fourth-best of Aerosmith's show-closing workouts. Smashing Pumpkins.

"Zero" vs. "Mama Kin"
Pretty prototypical low-tuning grunge vs. pretty good arena-rock boogie. Aerosmith wins here. Mosquito voice is again a demerit.

"Ava Adore" vs. "Cryin'"
Eh, um. Pretty good big dumb drummin' for the Pumpkins.

"Drown" vs. "Love In An Elevator"
This what the Pumpkins did that I liked. Layered and nuanced, if miserable, pop.

"Silverf*ck" vs. "What It Takes"
Dextrous playing from Pumpkins goes nowhere. "What It Takes" moves me not, also, but it does have that accordian goin. Eh, tie.

Exploding Gourds beat the Early Aviators, 5.5-4.5.

I was working on that ballot half the morning, listening to Pumpkinmusik in between legitimate tasks.

Don't hate me 'cause I'm thorough!

For the record the final is now 36.5-33.5. Aerosmith still wins.
