Downloading Music

I'm a dinosaur. I like CD's. I even have records. I have never downloaded any music.

I now have an IPOD at my disposal. Where do you guys get your music? Are there good free sites? How does a beginner go about getting started?

And most importantly, how do I protect my computer from viruses?

iTunes.

Simple to use, .99 a song, no viruses, made for your iPod.

There's also random, free (and legal) music at the following locations:

http://3hive.com/
http://music.for-robots.com/
http://www.salon.com/ent/audiofile/

I've downloaded tons of songs at each site without any problems.

Those are some personal faves, but there are plenty of other sites out there for free & legal downloads. For a listing of some of those sites, check out the iPod Lounge. I do like the iTunes store as well, though.

Podcasts are pretty sweet as well. KEXP, WOXY & XFM have some pretty groovy regular podcasts that target different types of music. If you have a favorite radio station, chances are, they'll have podcasts of various programs as well.

Good luck & enjoy the iPod! I'm madly, deeply in love with mine.

Almost all I listen to on my iPod is just uploaded from CD's so if you have a lot of CD's you might just want to import them into iTunes and then have fun listening to them mixed up on your iPod. I've been rediscovering a lot of stuff I hadn't listened to in years since I uploaded my entire CD collection last month (right now I'm listening to all the songs in alphabetical order). I still like to buy CD's - I like cover art & liner notes and the CD acts as a backup if the computer crashes.

They don't put spyware or adware on your hard drive though?

As far as I can see, it's only MP3s that are being download -- no software. Highly unlikely there's any spyware in them. Also, salon is a legitimate (and well respected) web magazine; they don't have to play tricks.

I don't believe an MP3 file can infect you. There may be some weird situation where it might be designed to do so, but it's unlikely in the extreme. Just be sure it actually is and MP3.

avoid Kazaa like the plague...because it will infect your computer with every virus, adware, and spyware known to man.
