It's a shame that they'll have to wait another 900 years. Most of them will probably be dead by then.

A Howard and a Howie! You don't see that every day!

about time for Al Leiter. He's been the forgotten Met.

Working for the Yankees probably didn't help.

Mets clarify this group will be inducted this year and every hundred years thereafter as part of Steve Cohen's 23 Skidoo initiative.

FWIW, Dykstra, whom most likely is getting the Pete Rose "Not while living" Treatment, and Roger McDowell are now the only ones from this 40th Anniversary team not in the Met Hall

A less interesting note, Howie Rose joins Joan Payson, and now 4 of the HOF Achievement Award winners without a trading card listed on this site:

May have to contact the Big Wigs at Typewriter to get their work as not only physical cards, but mass produced ones...or maybe get the biggest big wig to be a major contributor over there as that looks like the only types of home made cards allowed on there =;)

I'm always a tad confused by backdoor honors like achievement award (as if the others aren't being honored for achieving things), but I guess the idea is that it goes to non-public facing characters.

Welp, there goes that ;)

Though Al Jackson was the previous honoree of the award, and I guess that was an all encompassing honor for his playing, coaching and part of the player development and minor leagues staff for many years.

Particularly cool that Howie and Gary go in together. I very much associate them with each other in terms of tenure and general excellence.

A few Hall-acious reflections here.

Sounds like someone in the Mets office listened to the excellent episode of the National League Town podcast that suggested Mets who should be enshrined.

I thought the team would hold off on Gary and Howie until they retired. Nice to see them get recognition.

Re: Mets Hall’s Big Haul

It's odd how these things come in bursts. After Tommie A-GEE was inducted in 2002, the door remained shut for seven seasons before — BAM!-BAM!-BAM!-BAM! — four folks went in 2010. They passed on following that up in 2011, before John Franco and Mike Piazza joined in 2012 and 2013.

We feel like we're on a healthy and somewhat leisurely one-per season track, and then the team takes ANOTHER seven-year pass before calling out Ron Darling and Jon Matlack in 2021.

All the honoring-our-past hoop-la goes down in 2022 with the Old Timer's Day cermonies and two number retirements, but they again induct ZERO Hall of Famers. You'd like to think that was a considered decision and not an omission, but — POW!-POW!-POW!-POW! — four more in 2023.

I'm good with the choices — Leiter was the best 1998 Met there was — but it's as if the Mets, despite employing a thousand or more people, have to keep being reminded that there is a Hall of Fame.

Matlack, Darling, and Alfonzo as well in 2021.

A reminder that New York Mets Hall of Famer-elect Gary Cohen is a Hall of Fame caliber college basketball radio voice.
