Nose was a little out of joint this morning when I was watching the the temperature drop from the 40s into the teens in a couple of hours, and it was still 48 in NYC,but now I see it's cold there too

Now it's windchill below zero

☃️

Been busy just trying to do SOMETHING for the outdoor critters that won't freeze almost instantly :(

I have three heated dishes and they are getting a workout

Saw a kitty walk up to one of the little heated houses last night but it doesn't look like it slept in there so I threw some cat treats in tonight hoping something would sleep in there.

Midnight would stay in there for hours. I miss her 😿

Re: Baby it’s cold out there

I took off from work yesterday and today, glad I did , went to the park to see what I could see, mid 50s, got some birds then got caught in a hail storm.... Then the temps just kept dropping and the wind kept picking up. Tomorrow looks brutal but sunny, I'll be out early because after high winds and storms there is usually lots of birds.

We had been invited to a friend's party this evening, but it has been postponed until Monday.

Good decision.

They'll have time to work on and clear the roads by then.

Cooby, you have a kind heart.

We're bouncing between nine and 12, with a negative 12 wind chill.

If you see anybody on the streets, please call authorities to get them indoors.

Re: Baby it’s cold out there

It's -1 here now. Much colder with the wind of course

I really don't mind the cold; I'm in the weather most of the time at the greenhouses and dress for it but I really feel for the outdoor animals.

It was eerie at work today.. The fiberglass and other greenhouse elements, and the 60+year old ( third generation business!) structures were a creakin' and a groanin'

Very cool!

Forecast here is for a low of 5° overnight. In my next life I will marry

someone who understands how thermostats work. If it was 67° downstairs

a week ago and it will be 67° tomorrow morning why turn the heat up? It

will be like 72° upstairs when we wake up to pee at three in the morning.

Wind is crazy though.

Just going out for twenty minutes to feed the birds and strays is painful. Living in it (though I often daydream of living off the land) must be horrible

My normal five mile Saturday morning run will be done on a treadmill at my work gym today. Normally I dread the 'mill but it's not safe to run for 45 minutes in this garbage, plus I'm on call and I don't want to have to stop mid-run to try and look at texts or take calls.

My outdoor thermometer says 1 while my phone's app says -1, so I guess on average I'm just a big fat zero

... which I suppose is appropriate since folks have been telling me that for most of my life now.

But has anyone had a "Bomb Cyclone" go off in their neighborhood yet?

I love how weather forecasters use that term without explanation as if everyone listening knows what a bomb cyclone is.

I'm sure the Weather Channel explains it, although I'm also pretty sure the Weather Channel invented the term just in

the last few years because they thought it sounded cool not to mention dangerous, and convincing people that they're

in danger is essentially the WC's job description.

We had a fair amount of snow, but nothing horrendous. The wind was tough, and the temps in single digits. But it's a balmy 13 degrees now.

I have to make an hour-long drive in a little bit that I suspect will take at least 90 minutes due to going slow, pick up my daughter then head right back home.

Be careful!

I have to make a little trip out to pick up a couple of last minute things for my hubby; my intent was to get them on my way home from work this week but that didn't happen because of bad roads.

Re: Baby it’s cold out there

Drove up to see our son at his new job in central Vermont. Snowed like crazy from around Troy, NY to his place in Chittenden, VT on Friday evening. Fortunately, we didn't have any real issues with the drive. However, the snow and wind knocked out his power on the night we arrived, so we slept in a house that had an inside temperature of 38 degrees when we went to bed. Vermont Power trucks showed up around 9:00 AM on Christmas Eve morning and got the power restored in pretty quick order. They put a guy up in a basket truck who took a long stick and whacked the transformer like he was trying to get candy form a pinata, then suddenly, we had power. We gave them a standing ovation from the large living room windows. The waved and then they were gone.

That's funny. Never heard of transformer whacking!!

Hope he was making time-and-a-half holiday pay for that trick.

That was our best guess. It just looked funny for 3 vehicles and 4 workers to show up. Walk around and assemble tools for over 30 minutes, then a guy goes up in the lift and gives one of the transformers 2 solid whacks with a long pole. Then he signals to take him back down, because he is obviously done. We were just very thankful to have power (and heat) restored.

Re: Baby it’s cold out there

I've seen a guy reconnect a blown transformer*; it's like when a fuse blows in the box, it just needs to be re-set.

So they get out there with that long pole and simply flip that coil-looking device back into place. Maybe this one

needed ice-whacking off it as well but it's mainly just a case of reconnecting the bridge so that the 'lectricity starts

flowing again.

* a crow had flown directly into one and the short circuit let out a HUGE bang resulting in a local blackout!
