Some Buffalo player collapsed tonight during their MNF game vs Cincy and needed on field CPR.

The game was, at first, temporarily suspended before, after more than an hour, finally being postponed.

The player, Damar Hamlin, is in critical condition at a Cincinnati hospital.

This doesn't look good.

I wasn't watching either. Just figured I check on the score prior to turning in and found they were just then calling off the game which had still been in the 1st quarter.

The lengthy delay makes me wonder if the 'Shield' was eager to resume only to run into pushback from the teams.

IIRC when Erikson collapsed during the Euros and had a cardiac arrest UEFA finished the game a few hours later after it was established that the player was alive etc , there was obviously a lot of anger directed towards the suits.

Perhaps this will be added to (former NBA'er) John Stockton's list of "dozens" (or was it hundreds?) of athletes who have just "dropped dead" after receiving the Vax. If so, such an addition will bring the names that he's announced on that list up to one.

But there also wasn't the same distrust of the organization with regard to injury risk.

These players have to make peace with the fact that they're paid to play a game that could be killing them as they are playing it, in a way Euro-football players do not.

The fans have to make peace with the fact that they're cheering for a game that could be killing the players as they are playing it, in a way Euro-football fans do not.

In both cases, the medical emergency may turn out to have not really have been a product of the sport and the nature of its contact, but in the NFL case, that's clearly not where the players and most fans were.

Ironically, going down during a game, placing Hamlin moments away from quality medical care when every second counted, may be what saves him. I sure hope so.

Re: NFL

In this case it's possible that the cardiac arrest was triggered by a hit to the chest (him tackling someone) that occurred within a tiny milli-second window that upsets the heart's electrical system. I first heard about this when a thrown ball to the chest killed a Little League player a while back.

So if this were the case it sort of would be the sport killing him although in more a freakish chancy way rather than from the violence inherent in the sport.

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jan 04 2023 05:46 AM

So there appears to be some dispute over the source of the "five minute warmup" the two sides last night were going to get prior to the re-starting of the game.

ESPN mouthpiece Joe Buck apparently repeated that info four different times and it's a stretch to think they were just making that up with no input from the

league (I don't think the networks are allowed to take shits w/o say-so from 'The Shield'). An NFL spokesman, of course, denies anything came from them.

But few organizations I know have a 'the show must go on' attitude more than the NFL. From only reluctantly agreeing to ONE postponed week following

9/11 (reportedly the player reps of NYJ & NYG refusals to play forced the league into that one Sunday off), to plowing through the Covid season and

previous work stoppages (games that counted with replacement players just 12 days after a strike was called), and of course all the way back to playing

a full slate of games less than 48 hours after the assassination of JFK while the rest of the country essentially shut down that weekend.

Part of this stems from the fact that they have little maneuverability to schedule make-up games unless they occur early enough in the season to allow for

manipulation of each team's off week. They've already said that last night's game won't be played this week (how could it with every team scheduled for

Sunday?) and the playoffs start just six days after that with both Cincy & Buffalo in the mix. I can't see them just letting the game go un-played but I don't

see another solution either which feeds into the idea that they were all for continuing just five minutes after the ambulance left the field until the players

and coaches told them otherwise.

Yeah, I don't think Buck made anything up, and I'm not sure the idea of consulting with the players before making a decision even would occur to the NFL management.

Re: NFL

the NFL definitely wanted to get the game in.

At this point, the NFL is probably praying that the Bills win week 18 and the Chiefs lose, leaving the Bills 13-3 and the Chiefs 13-4, with the Bills holding a head to head win they would clinch the #1 seed without the need for making up this game.

Meanwhile, the league would also have to hope that the Bengals beat the Ravens, leaving the game also meaningless in the NFC North race.

i'd bet those games heavily as the fix may be in

I don't think it does either until, as in this case and the one following 9/11, the players make a choice on their own forcing the league

to realize that they'll lose the pr battle with their plan and therefore no longer have the upper hand in the decision making process.

Re: NFL

The Buffalo/Cincy game will not be made up as the NFL contemplates how to handle playoff seeding given the uneven number of games played smong AFC qualifiers. Win pct would be the obvious and simplest way but other plans are apparently under consideration.

batmagadanleadoff
Jan 05 2023 07:27 PM
Re: NFL

As per The Athletic, Monday's game might be made up after the end of the regular season. Under that plan, the playoff games would then be pushed back one week and the off week right before the Super Bowl would be eliminated.

Another option being explored is to expand the playoff field by one team per conference. With an eight team field, no team would have a first round bye. And the Jets would suddenly be in contention again, for that newly created 8th AFC playoff seed.

With games scheduled for this Saturday, they're gonna hafta pick a plan real soon.

Re: NFL

Nothing appears to be final or off the table yet.

What's interesting is that the NFL apparently has an existing written policy stating that winning pct is to be used to determine placement/seeding in the case of uncompleted games even as they seem to be determined to ignore that entirely in favor of coin flips and neutral site games for playoff games between teams with unequal records.

FOX has the first game, so at 1:30 - 2:30 you can start to get psyched with NFL Championship Chase. That's followed at 2:30 - 3:30 by FOX NFL Kickoff, which is in turn followed by FOX Football Sunday (psst, it's Saturday) from 3:30 - 4:30
