Kenny Loggins FACTS

1. He was signed initially as a solo artist by Columbia but was young and clueless and leaned on producer Jim Messina so much they became a duo/band. The first album was called "Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin' In"

2. Eddie Money was among the singers in I'M ALRIGHT ("Cannonball right away" "It makes me feel good!") but Kenny forgot to give him a performer credit. Money vowed to knock him out

3. His son Cody Loggins is 6 feet, 9 inches tall

4. Kenny left his first wife for his new-age therapist

5. Melissa Manchester co-wrote "Whenever I Call You Friend" but Kenny never considered dueting with her with Stevie Nicks available. Loggins opened for Mac on the Rumors tour.

Re: Kenny Loggins FACTS

Kenny Loggins question: Did he do the complex, layered vocal arrangements at the top of "Whenever I Call You Friend" and the bridge of "I'm Alright"?

For my money, those are the two best bits of his career.

He has won a Grammy and an Emmy and also been nominated for an Oscar and a Tony. That's pretty rarefied air in the entertainment business.

Re: Kenny Loggins FACTS

Loggins co-wrote "What a Fool Believes" with Michael McDonald and released a version of it before the Doobie Brothers' more successful version was released and went to No. 1

Had the title cut on "Footloose," but for me, his "I'm Free (Heaven Helps the Man)" is the better song on the soundtrack album.

He says he came up with that intro on his own. I don't know if he sang it. That is a sweet song.

My Five Kenny Loggins Facts
•
Is the cousin of Dave Loggins, but they didn't know each other and only learned about their relationship after their mutual careers had gotten going.

  •
For a skinny, hairy, bearded guy from northern Washington, he swims awfully well.

  •
Probably owes The James Gang some money.

  •
"Whenever I Call You Friend" was co-written with Melissa Manchester, but was instead recorded with Stevie Nicks, but ... it was billed only to Loggins, despite clearly being a duet. Officially, in fact, it was Loggins' "solo" debut, despite being far less of a solo performance than many of his Loggins & Messina traxx. So he kind of screwed over two different women with that one.

  •
Is the subject of a conspiracy theory — believed by only me — that he developed his post-Loggins & Messina high, breathy, R&B voice by moving in the same LA studio circles as Michael Jackson.
  •
When I was growing up this song was a staple of NY rock radio. Today no Kenny Loggins or L&M song even made it to this year's top 1043. It's been forgotten, sacrificed to grunge and hair metal replacements in the modern Klassik Rawk canon

Not the world's biggest talent but shifted from the SoCal country rock scene of Poco and the early Eagles to become a blue-eyed R&B West Coast jazzer; then the King of 80s Movie Soundtracks and then kind of a joke, but one he can laugh about. He's like 74 years old now, still soft-rockin

If Kenny Loggins didn't exist, and they made a movie in 2023 about some fictional guy named "Kenny Loggins" who played Live Aid in 1985, the film would have dressed his band EXACTLY as they turned out to be dressed. I'd watch the film and think "That's TOO on the nose. No way EVERYBODY in the band would look so stereotypically 1985."

    But alas ...

You're probably thinking of Bartles and Jaymes Wine Coolers. Zimas weren't a thing until 1993.

    I took a shot.

B&J Wine Coolers, the official drink of white suburban HS girls, were already a punchline by the mid-70s.

Zimas felt mid-80s-ish to me and might have succeeded, or at least not flopped as completely and as quickly, if had they arrived a half-dozen or so years earlier.

I still don't really know what they were.

    Re: Kenny Loggins FACTS

The wine cooler industry was ravaged by federal tax law that made it impossible for its makers to have product priced comparably to beer. The liquor brands ran with it and introduced super-premium pricing.

Now some states have changed rules about taxing to base it on alcohol content and not base liquor so you're now seeing canned vodkas sodas alongside beer in the store. Also more expensive

Looking back on it, B&J was likely an attempt by a major Corp (E&J Gallo) to mainstream and 'adult-ize' the wine cooler market, or at least to make it look like they weren't strictly aiming for the teen market even if their product still had that Hawaiian Punch pallette of flavors and colors.
