Philadelphia A’s Content

Leave it to Tyler Kepner to find a compelling Philadelphia baseball angle to Super Bowl week: with a win over the Chiefs, the Eagles would match the Athletics for most championships by a Philly team. Kepner tracked down the last of the Mackmen, 97-year-old Bobby Shantz, to reflect.

Shantz, who later played for three Yankees' pennant winners in a 16-year career, is the last surviving player to have played for Mack ‌ — officially, that is. Mack, who also owned the team, was 87 years old when he managed his final season in 1950.

“Connie had a son Earle, and he ended up doing most of the managing, because Connie was very quiet; he never said a heck of a lot,” Shantz said. “I still get letters in the mail from people, and they ask me what the difference was between Connie Mack and Casey Stengel. I say, ‘One never said anything and the other never shut up!'”

Re: Philadelphia A’s Content

I was at a party in 1992 aboard a yacht in Florida (never mind how I got there) and among the guests was the then-Senator from Florida Connie Mack III. The second Connie Mack was his son from his second marriage (Earle was from the first marriage) and he was also at the party - about 80 years old at the time. His father also hired him to work for the A's as a coach and he claimed to have the record as being the youngest major league coach but the players all hated him because he was younger than all of them, knew nothing and represented to them the cheapness of his dad. His coaching career did not last long. I didn't get a chance to quiz him more about his baseball past as we were part of a larger group that was mostly political in nature. He was very nice to my dad though.

And the Chiefs have won more titles than the Kansas City A's. If they win on Sunday, they'll pass the Royals.

Monarchs still holding on with 5 NLWS/League Pennants when the NLWS wasn't played that are now considered part of MLB play.

Bring back the BOC and give Shantz one.
