That should be just enough to cover the backs of the additional spring training coaches, leaving aside the notion that 8 may now be joined by 5 (and possibly 16 and 18 and 48) in the Hall of the Resevered-but-not-Retired.

No special guest celebrity instructors. No Mookie or Mikey. Not even a Teufel. No offense, Miguel Cairo.

I don't like 33 on Ruf. I like to see 33 on the back of a big, slow, caucasian, misbegotten-but-likable, righthanded-hitting backup catcher. Give Ruf 4 and hand 33 off to Nick Meyer or Hayden Senger — preferably Meyer.

I guess you could say that about any rule change. The largest effect might be from the new rule that limits the pitcher to two pickoff throws before throwing a pitch.

It could just be that Alvarez is catching. And the Mets' stolen base was from Tim Locastro, who isn't in the org for any reason except to steal bases.

The game is definitely quicker. But I never saw the previous pace as a problem.

Re: It's the Springtime of Our Lives 2023

My MLB.tv frame says David Robertson is pitching, the chyron says Eric Orze is pitching, and the announcer says minor league floater Justin Courtney is pitching. The camera says Courtney is correct. Or, at least, someone with “COURTNEY” on the back of his shirt is on the mound, and giving up a homer for the first Astro run.

Courtney is wearing #30, which is the number that the roster above says belongs to Robertson, which I guess explains some of the confusion.

And it's a GKR telecast to kick off the spring.

Butto walks the leadoff batter (Berti), then K's the next three.

We, the audience, are NOT seeing the pitch countdown clock but it does appear on the SNY 'bug' once it gets down to 7 seconds remaining.

The bases are noticeably bigger but, despite Alex Cora's initial claim, don't quite resemble pizza boxes.

Mets trail 9-4 as we move ahead at a quickened pace (already in the eighth). Your star of the afternoon is Tim Locastro, 2-3 with a stolen base and a runny scored.

David Peterson also gets some big points by giving up no hits and a walk while striking out three in his two-inning start, facing actual, real-life Cardinals.

Thrills in Bradenton today as the Pirates hosted the Orioles. With Pittsburgh ahead, and the game seemingly over after the top of the ninth, both teams elected to play on through the bottom of the ninth to get their players the work. In the short time it took to decide this, however, Chad Fairchild's umpire team had left the playing field. So the two teams played baseball exactly the same way it's played in Heaven — with no umpires, calling their own balls and strikes and outs and safes.

Somehow, the world kept turning.

The general nature of these pre-game, interview-heavy broadcasts is terrible.

Forget the fact that athletes aren't the most articulate bunch, and that they throw a lot of platitudes out there, but it makes it impossible to multitask and follow the game. I know the games don't count, but I still need to be able to get things done during the broadcast. And you can't passively watch the game and try to get by on listening to the play by play when the announcers are skipping all of the in-game action to talk to players and coaches and retired players.

Jose Quintana is out of the WBC because of the pain he felt during yesterday's game. From his Instagram:

[BLOCKQUOTE] I want to share with all the followers of Colombia baseball. unfortunately I can't represent my country in this classic world, I have come dealing with a bother on the left side of my back, hoping to be 100% and attend to the call of our country, but today I had to leave the game because precisely the trouble still persists; it was a very difficult decision for me because as all my teammates I have the illusion to go out and give it everything for 🇨🇴 but as a professional I am aware that without health this is not possible.

from the distance I send the best of energies to the boys and the technical body hoping that we will once again leave the name of the country high 🇨🇴.

Now I'm just completely recovering and trying to be ready by the start of the 2023 MLB season.[/BLOCKQUOTE]

Buck is pissed that the last game is against the same team that the Mets open the season with the following Thursday. He has already had to move regular starters to minor league games (and will again on Thursday) to avoid having Mets' starters face NL East opponents. Pete, Jeff, and Adam return on Thursday, giving them 4 games to re-learn the new rules. Jeff won't travel on Thursday and Friday (he's barely played in the WBC--what a waste of time) so he will be with the minor leaguers.

Scherzer is working at 1000 miles per hour, calling his own pitches with the Pitch-Com on the back of his glove.

Luis Guillorme leading off has reached three times in three trips, walking twice and singling, with two runs and two RBI.

Today's game at Tampon Bay is on MLB Channel at 1:00 for those so

inclined to watch or record. Pre-season winding down!

Working from home so I likely tune in.

Apparently my provider YouTube.TV has not only jacked my prices but also fucked me out of the MLB network. Thanks for that, dickholes.

Has Scherzer really thrown 118 pitches or is the box score making that up?

Your final is 11-2. Max Sherzer went seven innings, striking out 12. The last two innings of shutout ball came courtesy of
•
Zach Muckenhirn, who hopes to catch on as the second lefty and designated "Zach," and

  •
Trey McLoughlin, who struck out two despite peaking at A+ (five innings last season) so far in his career, hailing from Bridgeport, and looking like Craig Swan (if you squint).
  •
Omar Narvaez added his first homer in a Met uniform.

Thursday seems so far away. I was going to post this in the months-

old IGT (that I thought we had) but couldn't find it.

The Mets finish Spring with a 10-14 record plus however many ties. I looked up their Grapefruit League record for the first time just before the last out of the last game when it occurred to me I had no idea whether they'd been primarily losing or primarily winning or neither.

It'll be nice to care again.

In other Grapefruit League action, Houston beat St. Louis 24-1.

Must be a lot of guys on Houston fighting for roster spots.

So the background to this is that pitcher Kimbrel had been called for a pitch clock violation on the previous pitch resulting in ball four.

Probably mad at the call, he somewhat angrily threw the ball out of play (maybe it was the ball's fault?) then rejected the replacement

ball the HP ump tossed him also. Rather than throw out another ball to Kimbrel, the ump, probably thinking he was being punked at

this point, opted instead to drop the next offering into Realmuto's mitt. When JTR's glove suddenly disappeared the ump must have

assumed that the backstop was also party to the ongoing act and immediately tossed him.

But Realmuto wasn't looking back so it doesn't seem like he could have known when to pull the glove away if that was even his intention.

I think he just probably reflexively offered his glove then, when no ball was immediately placed there, assumed the ump was going to

throw it out himself as he had just done the previous time.

The ump is a minor league one with 30-some replacement appearances in the majors under his belt. Not sure if this incident sends

him back to the end of the line or not but it wasn't a good look for him.
