Slapped this together to see how many times they play whom(?) and where.

(because I don't spend enough freakin' time on MS-Excel)

Thank you. I love that they get the West Coast trips over before the All-Star Break.

An interesting article in The Athletic said that a team could request shorter or longer road trips. It appears Buck likes longer but fewer trips because they are away for longer stretches this year than last year (the schedule was made before he was hired). The Phillies seem to be the opposite, favoring more trips of shorter duration.

I didn't know we were in the era of schedule requests.

[BLOCKQUOTE]Before it made up this schedule, MLB asked all 30 teams for special requests and travel preferences. At least in part, the schedule reflects those requests.

So teams such as the Mariners and Giants, who do a lot of flying no matter what the schedule looks like, tell MLB their preference is to take more three-city trips when they're traveling across the country. So if they're traveling east, they might as well see as much of the east as possible. The upside of that is fewer total road trips and less multi-time-zone travel.

But other teams, like the Phillies, would rather do shorter trips — two cities, then back home — wherever possible. So that gives them more regular homestands and more flexible home scheduling. But in this case, it also means they find themselves making trips like Milwaukee/San Diego or Houston/Los Angeles.[/BLOCKQUOTE]

There are all sort of requests that get factored into making the schedule:

-Stadium lease-based: eg. the Marlins, in their old stadium, used to have secondary scheduling priority to football, and at times, concerts

-Municipality-based: The cities of NY and Chicago prefer to

not have both both teams playing at home at the same time, when possible

-Team-based: ex. Cincinnati always wants a home opening day; Boston always wants to be home for Patriot's Day

-Player-based: under the CBA, the unions can put in objections and preferences (like the road trip preferences described above).

Guess it's just me, but the ability to request shorter or longer road trips is nutty.
