Francisco Alvarez has been assigned to Syracuse.

Well, that closes the book on that storyline. Darin Ruf gonna be a 2023 Met.

Is that necessarily true? Maybe Baty wins the third base job and Escobar becomes a DH?

Re: Take a Hike, Son (Spring Training Cuts 2023)

No, indeed, it's not necessarily true, though I suspect, as a lefthanded batter, Baty is more immediately pressuring Daniel Vogelbach. The guys barking up Ruf's tailpipe seem to be Álvarez and Vientos.

Re: Take a Hike, Son (Spring Training Cuts 2023)

man, ruf is really just not even making the case for him to be on the roster this spring, is he?

best thing for him might be for his wrist to keep bothering him into a DL stint, where he has an extended recovery in AAA.

it's crazy that he dropped off SO MUCH from what he could do for the giants. if he's no longer that player - and this spring aftrer last year, it really doesn't look like he is - then how do you roster him?

i'd go into the season with mcsquirrel as my outfield backup plan, escobar as my dh alongside vogelbach, and baty penciled in at third.

Vientos is getting Baby'd into the corner by allayouse.

Also, I'm'a not sure why Escobar has now twice been asked to put his glove away in favor of the rook.

I'm thinking it could be either giving time to prove he can play third or showcasing him as trade bait.

Or both.

Or neither.

Darin Ruf will continue to draw a MLB paycheck while these two guys, who actually can hit, will be up here in the sticks playing in front of sauced up local classic rock cover musicians. Life's not fair.

Baty and Vientos together is interesting.

Muckenhirn was a possible lefty for the pen. If there is to be such a beast now, it looks like it'll be T.J. McFarland.

It sounds as if Brett is not ready as a defender at 3B. Eppler said that they see Brett as "Above average player on a championship caliber team" geez

This could also be about delaying his eligibility for free agency.

That's the only reason I can think for this. Darin Ruf clogging up this roster is inexcusable. They'll both be playing regularly soon, escpecially if Escobar and Ruf get off to the bad starts I expect.

I'm way more annoyed at the Correa non-signing if all of the bluest chippers are going to spend 2023 in the 'Cuse. I'm not dropping $40 on a parking space to watch Darin Fucking Ruf play.

Re: Take a Hike, Son (Spring Training Cuts 2023)

Cycling through options from oldest to youngest is the way these things are done, though. If Ruf gets first go and doesn't perform, they move on by May, and have two big fat options behind him. Possibly three if you count Tim Locastro.

Righthanded DH is the place where you want to keep your options open.

That makes sense. On the other, bigger, smarter hand, though, Vientos and Baty both actually hit this spring. While Ruf mainly did his very convincing impression of 2022 Met Darin Ruf. And that guy sucked big rocks.

That's something. Ruf-Trade gets cycled out even more quickly.

I guess this means that Marte and Alonso and Canha get time at righthanded DH at the top of the season, while Locastro and Pham get their gloves out.

Let us keep in mind that Baty and Vientos are a combined 13 for 74 vs ML pitching thus far.

locastro also gives the mets a little bit of health insurance in case nimmo is still feeling the effects of his knee/ankle injury. i'm much more ok with him making the team over the kids than ruf.

oe: mind you, this comment is relative only to the start of teh season. once we see how healthy and effective everyone is, i think we'll see baty up sooner rather than later, with vientos to follow.

If that's the case against promoting them, then they should never ever be promoted because you can say that all of the time into perpetuity before they're eventually promoted.

I mean, how do they gwt to improve on that 13 for 74 without being promoted?

I know exactly what you meant. But go ahead. Keep the 13 for 74 in mind for what then? To improve their 13 for 74 against major league pitchers by batting against minor leaguers?

Baty hasn't really played in AAA and I can't say it is wrong to think some time there would benefit him.

I didn't say it was right or wrong. All I said is that if you're gonna consider Baty and the other guy's combined 13 for 74 against major league pitching to date, well it's gonna be 13 for 74 no matter when they're promoted. If they go 100 for 100 with 100 homers in the minors next month, they'll still be a combined 13 for 74 against MLB pitching before they're promoted again.

Apparently yes. But eventually, they'll be promoted. And no matter when that happens and what they've done in the minors, they'll have been a combined 13 for 74 against major league pitching. I think that's a fait accompli. Do you think that's a fait accompli?
