Mick Fleetwood has come out and said that Christine McVie's passing looks like the line in the sand that Fleetwood Mac can not exist beyond. Of course (a) they've said that before, (b) it's not like they didn't just endure the better part of two decades without her from 1999-2016. Also (c) the world (if I may speak for the world) has in an interest, both pure and perverse, in seeing some entity called Fleetwood Mac exist onward, perhaps into perpetuity.

So, you're Fleetwood Mac's manager, and it's your job to recruit a new member. What you're looking for is:
•
a keyboardist (though not necessarily),

  •
who specializes in piano/piano-dedicated synths (though not necessarily),

  •
who sings (though not necessarily),

  •
who composes (though not necessarily),

  •
who is female (though not necessarily),

  •
who brings some of their own fame/juice/catalog to the act (though not necessarily),

  •
be young enough to pump some energy into the beast (though not necessarily),

  •
be old enough to not clash with the legacy (though not necessarily),

  •
who doesn't bring so much fame/juice/catalog that it would be overwhelming (though, again, not necessarily — Lionel Richie, we can talk),

  •
who is something of an aesthetic/tonal/stylistic/audience/cognitive match for what Fleetwood Mac is or has been (though, you know, not necessarily),
  •
Some back-of-the-envelope candidacies may or may include but not be limited to:

    Tori Amos

    Fiona Apple

    Jon Batiste

    Eric Bazilian

    Vanessa Carlton

    Paul Carrack

    Nick Cave

    Mark Cohn

    Harry Connick, Jr.

    Burton Cummings

    Chris deBurgh

    Taylor Hanson

    Bruce Hornsby

    Carole King

    Liam Ó Maonlaí

    Donny Osmond

    Howard Jones

    Rickie Lee Jones

    Steve Porcaro

    Paul Shaffer

    Regina Spektor

    Benmont Tench

    Gary Wright

Cheryl Crow checks off a lot (if not all) of those boxes.

Some of those people do not have angelic voices.

Agreed. And some that do, like Nick Cave, have the voices of dark angels.

Cooby places the angelic voice factor high. We're zeroing in!

If Mick was smart, he would start an All-Star band like Ringo and Sammy Hagar. He could rotate different people in for Christine and Lindsey (hell, even Stevie if it came to that) and play their songs too. I'm pretty sure they played Crowded House and Petty songs on their last tour when some of those guys played Lindsey for him.

You think Carlton would put aside her own act for a bit to go party in the big suites with the Mac? She would be a minor coup, no?

Nah I think they're toast. Between Christine being gone and Lindsey already pushed out there's not much left to reform.

Honestly, what I'd love most would be for them to bring in some hot shit blues guitar players and reform the Peter Green/Danny Kirwan era Mac and just endlessly rip through blues numbers. Like this one!

Carlton's got Mac connections. Her 2013 wedding to Deer Tick's Jon McCauley was officiated by Stevie Nicks. She covered "Dreams" as part of a 2018 project.

I've seen Deer Tick live several times and she traveled with them on some of their shorter tours and would sing a duet with her husband at many shows.

I think we're on to something here. Invite hubbo to join too. What could be more Fleetwood Macky?

We're so good at solutions here. We should print business cards.

You got a couple of Joneses in there, but what about Norah? I think her solo career is a bit too big for her to shrink down much, but she ticks a lot of those boxes.

He runs marathons, is good enough of a guitar player that he can play in front of live audiences. And he knows who Danny Kirwan is.

    How cool is that?

That tour was way beyond my purse, but yeah, Crowded House Split Enz, and Heartbreaker songs were on the setlists, especially songs that Campbell wrote or co-wrote. Plus they rotated in a couple of pre-Buckingham songs.

On one hand, it's perverse to try to keep a version of a band going when the principals are dying off or getting kicked to the curb. But on the other hand, there's something right and good about an ensemble still being the official curators of an act's legacy. And Fleetwood Mac has several legacies, not even including the ones that Campbell and Finn have merged in there.

Love this. Certainly has the angelic voice.
