Dylan, Dylan, Dylan.

He has something in common with a current (injured) Met:

[BLOCKQUOTE]During the 2020 season, Bundy posted a 6–3 record with a 3.29 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 65+2⁄3 innings. He finished ninth in the voting for the Cy Young Award.

Bundy was named the Angels' starting pitcher for Opening Day 2021. In the 4-3 no-decision win against the Chicago White Sox, Bundy pitched six innings, striking out six batters and allowing three runs.[28] On June 28, 2021, in a game against the New York Yankees, Bundy suffered a bout of heat exhaustion and vomited on the field. He had pitched 1+2⁄3 innings, allowing two runs.[29][30] After going 1–7 with a 6.78 ERA in his first 14 starts, Bundy was replaced in the rotation by José Suárez and was moved to the bullpen on June 30.[31] On July 1, he became the second established member of the Angels starting rotation to be moved into the bullpen during the season, joining José Quintana.[32][/BLOCKQUOTE]

Minor league contract at 29, that's wild. When he was coming up, he was supposed to be the next Nolan Ryan or some shit. Expectations are a helluva drug.

Good depth signing. Hopefully he never needs to leave Syracuse.

Probably no safer bet in baseball than betting against any starting pitcher being the next Nolan Ryan.

But hey, he's the new Dylan, so that's beating the odds right there!

He was once the 4th overall draft pick out of an Oklahoma HS at a time when there seemed to have been a lot of pitchers plucked out of the Sooner state.

Al Bundy reciting the greatest Xmas poem ever rewritten…

    'Twas the night before Christmas,

    And all through the house,

    No food was a-stirrin',

    Not even a mouse.

    Stockings were hung round

    Dad's neck like a tie,

Along with a note that said,

    "Presents or die."

    Children were plotting

    All night in their beds,

    While the wife's constant whining

    Was splitting his head.

    But Daddy had money

    This year in the bank,

    Then they closed up early,

And now Dad's in the tank.

    All of a sudden,

    Santa appeared,

    A sneer on his face,

    Booze in his beard.

    "Santa," I said,

    As he laughed merrily,

"You do so much for others,

    Do something for me."

    "Bundy," he said,

    "You only sell shoes,

Your son is a sneak thief,

    Your daughter's a floose."

    "Ho ho," Santa said,

    "Should I mention your wife?

    Her hair's like an A-bomb,

    Her nails like a knife."

    He climbs up the chimney,

    That fat piece of dung,

    He mooned me two times,

    He stuck out his tongue.

    I heard him exclaim,

As he broke wind with glee,

    "You're married with children,

    You'll never be free."

Dylan debuted like a house on fire. He started off at full-season A-ball at 19 in 2012. He threw 30 innings there without giving up an earned run, striking out 40, walking two (take that, Nolan Ryan!), and giving up five hits.

You don't want to get caught up in the moment and promote a guy before his time, but there are very few arguments to keep such a character down, and so he was sent to high-A, where he threw 57 more innings, followed by AA, where he threw another 16 2/3. He wasn't still throwing nothing but shutouts, but he continued to be a highly effective pitcher.

You know where this is going, but there in his debut season, the Orioles promoted him to the big league roster, where he helped them close out the season by throwing 1 2/3 shutout innings in late September.

That's coming on like a comet.

You can guess where that leads. Tommy John surgery the next season, and calcification of his shoulder in the following one, and he doesn't return to the big leagues until 2016. By that time, the kids that were thrilled to see his debut were already cynical teenagers, and when asked why they were so cynical, they pointed to poor Dylan.

He's had a perfectly mediocre career since then, even with some highlights, but his velocity is a distant memory. To his credit, he's stayed mostly healthy since his early-career issues, and his next inning at at AAA will be his first.

He might be the Orioles' Tim Leary.
