Syracuse Baseball 2023

AAA Syracuse has started their season.

And Brett Baty is hitting like he wants to get back to the majors very soon.

After scoring only two runs on Opening Day on Friday, the Triple-A Syracuse Mets offense exploded for 16 runs and five home runs on Saturday in their 16-6 win over the Worcester Red Sox. The Mets were led by third base prospect Brett Baty, who hit two home runs and knocked in five runs.

Catcher Francisco Álvarez and first baseman Mark Vientos each hit a solo home run and shortstop Ronny Mauricio knocked in two runs as four of the Mets' top eight prospects fueled the Syracuse offensive outburst.

And Francisco Alvarez not only threw out a baserunner attempting to steal, but he also stole a base himself.

Hope opener Tuesday at 2 PM and another matinee Wed at 1 PM. Trying to figure out if I can wiggle out of work for a few hours to attend one of these, or possibly the Saturday game if it's not too chilly. My family will not join me for 50 degree baseball, I suspect.

Re: Syracuse Baseball 2023

Brett Baty was removed from Tuesday's game for Triple-A Syracuse with an apparent right hand injury.

Michael Mayer of Metsmerized adds that a trainer came out to see Baty during his third-inning at-bat shortly after he was spotted shaking his right hand following a swing-and-miss. He wound up staying in the contest, but was pulled in the ensuing frame. There should be an update on his status sometime in the coming days. It's a tough break since he's gotten off to a phenomenal start this year at Triple-A Syracuse.

Best case basically. Not going to make it to the park for today's 1:10 tilt, sadly, due to life/work conflicts. This whole homestand may be a wash. It's neither particularly sunny nor warm today and the forecast doesn't call for much of either this week.

Home run derby today - the wind must blowing out(or the pitching sucks. or both). They're down 10-4 in the 8th.

But Alvarez has a homer for the good guys and Mauricio has two.

Re: Syracuse Baseball 2023

Well, we didn't stay for both games, but spending one game with my dad and son was pretty cool too. Beautiful day for a game.

They don't have coneys around here in CT, but every once in a while I'll have a box of 'em shipped here. I hadn't been on the lookout for one, but when I saw it on the menu, I knew what I had to do. I heard Wegmans was planning on opening a store down here, so there is hope.

I had tix a few rows behind the 1B dugout and had a good view of Lucchesi on the mound. He got victimized by Matt Adams for a solo shot, but made most other batters look silly. Walked too many guys, but he held former Mets Plawecki and Blankenhorn to a combined 0-for-6, 2Ks. He got bailed out by Khalil Lee in RF a couple times, making a sweet diving catch in the gap, and then a nice running grab later in the game.

Mauricio and Vientos didn't do much, but they didn't see anything to hit, really. Mets won the game on a 2-run HR by Lorenzo Cedrola, a 25 y/o CF who I hadn't heard of before. It was his 1st homer of the year, and he ended up hitting his 2nd one in game 2.

Ronny Mauricio is playing 2B for SYR tonight. If he keeps hitting and doesn't embarrass himself at 2B (there's no reason why he would) the Mets can call him up and move McNeil to LF with Canha playing RF for Marte (let's hope he's OK) and DH'ing.

I got my Syracuse Mets cap in the mail yesterday. New Era puts the team word mark on the back of the 39/Thirty caps, and it's in orange, just like front of the jerseys. And I was thinking, "Why did the Mets do that, since the blue with the orange outline looks so much better.

Re: Syracuse Baseball 2023

Syracuse were down 3-0 and 7-2 hosting Lehigh Valley tonight before finally entering the ninth down 7-6, before a two-out double by Khalil Lee tied everything up.

Stupid rules happen though, and with help from the magic runner, Lehigh Valley went back up 9-7 in the top of the 11th. Two good comebacks deserve a third, and the Mets tied it up on another Khalil Lee double, this time good for two runs. Lehigh Valley then walked Michael Perez intentionally to pitch to a rehabbing Tim Locastro with one out. He makes a lot of soft contact and is a terrible double-play candidate, so I don't quite know what they were thinking, but damned if the Mets didn't win it in the oddest way, with Locastro reaching on a bases-loaded catcher's interference call.

D.J. Stewert, Jaylin Davis, and Danny Mendick all went deep for Syracuse, with Ronny Mauricio collecting three more hits to raise his batting average to .353.

Re: Syracuse Baseball 2023

so, what would you do with him once you brought him up? where does he play? because i'd want his bat in the lineup every day.

i'd love it if he and/or baty could play LF, but i'm not sure how much that's the case. do you drop pham if so?

if you line him up at DH, do you drop vogelbach? or does vogelbach move to the bench and either EE or guillorme gets the axe?

cutting vogelbach is probably the best call from a roster construction standpoint, i think, in that he gives you the least flexibility and defensive utility, but he's also the best hitter so far of the four i've mentioned.

what are your thoughts?

Edgy MD
May 10 2023 11:45 AM
Re: Syracuse Baseball 2023

If you think he's most likely to initially take Canha's at-bats, that (with a little stretching into other people's territory) could get him into the lineup something like 70% of the time.

But that's the rub with competing and transitioning a the same time. You're put between the Scylla of assembling the lineup most likely to win the night and the Charybdis of assembling the lineup most likely to help you win down the road.

I think both can be done. I don't think talent is going to rot if a player is deployed 50-90% of the time on a winning team, depending on how things develop. Plus, he can hopefully get the special experience of being part of a winning team.

Álvarez came up and started 50% of the time, and that seems to be increasing. Baty came up and started 65% of the time, and that certainly has increased. I think that's a lot healthier for the both of them than the pitchers who get yo-yo'd, and never get to follow up on their failures by making adjustments and immediately seeing how they play out against similar competition.

Re: Syracuse Baseball 2023

You could work Vientos into several spots, Canha Pham and Vogelbach will lose ab's for sure

Baty and Alvarez have worked themselves into the #1 option at their position most nights

Vientos "could" become a #1 option at say LF or DH

Canha Vogelbach and Pham may not be long as Mets in some form of this scenario

If you want to go all in of sorts there is also Mauricio to consider

I find it exciting that you could have four performing Rookies in the lineup together

I'm all in favor of young-ing up this team and establishing some building blocks going forward

Re: Syracuse Baseball 2023

Here's what I would do. (In theory, anyway. If I really had decision-making powers I'd give this more thought than I'm actually doing.)

Let Mauricio play second base, moving McNeil to left field, replacing Canha.

Let Vientos be the right-handed DH. Whose roster spot would he take? Pham? Escobar? A pitcher? I don't know. But I'd like to see both Mauricio and Vientos join Baty and Alvarez on the team. It will either give the 2023 team a boost that might help them make the postseason, or if the Mets miss this year, it will give them the experience that will be useful for 2024's effort.

A five-run explosion in the eighth and Jaylin Dayvis homer in the ninth powered the Syracusers to a streak-breaking 8–7 win over the Buffles. Fourteen hits in total by the Mets included three more by Vientos and two by Mauricio. Gary Sanchez debuted with two hits and a walk of his own.

Southpaw Nathan Lavender got the save, coming on with the bases loaded and striking out the only batter he faced — star Buffalo firsbaseman Spencer Horwitz — on three pitches. Lavender has been coming on strong since starting the season in AA, and despite only 66 career minor league innings, he should totally get your attention as a potential 2023 contributor to a Mets pen that has been lefthander-poor.

    A snapshot of the roster is below, and it's a mess. First of all, it's hard to tell who is a starter and who is a reliever on any given night, because they're just throwing pitchers against the wall and seeing who might stick, and not a lot are. Secondly, despite a presumptive limit on the roster, their clubhouse is packed, with the rules providing plenty of loopholes to carry rehabbers and "developmental" players and such.

    He made a couple of nice plays in games we attended last week. They are back in town this week and I hope to attend either Wednesday or Thursday evening, as the rest of our week is booked up with other stuff.

    OE: I guess Thursday night, then, as Wednesday is another early 11:05 AM start and "Education Day" for the kiddos

    Tonight's game was postponed because of the smoky air coming down from Canadian fires.

    Maybe it will be Thursday and you can see a double dip.

    Maybe they can send Vogelbach there to clean the air. He sucks so much he could clean the air over the entire city.

    It's one of those Covid-Era adjustments that stuck. They switched from the three-game series model to a six-game standard, to cut down on travel and other opportunities for exposure and stuff. I'm not sure how effective it was, but I'm sure the accountants appreciated cutting the travel in half, so now most series run from Tuesday–Saturday.

    Vientos is back in the swing of things in AAA...

    Last night:

    Mauricio played Left field, 2 walks, 1 run scored;

    Vientos played first base, 1 Home Run (14th), 2 RBI, 2 Runs scored, 1 walk

    Voit DH, 1 HR (4), 1 RBI, 2 Runs scored, 1 walk

    https://www.milb.com/gameday/mets-vs-bulls/2023/06/22/723720#game_state=final,game_tab=,game=723720

    unfortunately pitching prospect (recently moved up to AAA) struggled again with his control walking 3 in less than 4 complete innings...Vasil had great control until his undisclosed injury in late May, and has struggled since his return.

    2 walks with 27 strikeouts in April;

    4 walks with 21 strikeouts in May;

    7 walks with 12 strikeouts in June;

    Took in last night's game under hazy skies but pleasant temps and watch the home team get stomped 7-0 by Scranton Wilkes Barre. This being the AAA MFY affiliate the ballpark was busier than usual and also more obnoxious. We made the best of it.

    On our way out I said hello to GM Jason Smorol, whom I know from repeated trips to the ballpark and my daughter's recognition there in 2021 for her Girl Scout award. He gave me a high five and asked me if I had a good time and I told him I'd be happier once all the mouth breathing Yankee fans went back to their caves. He agreed whole heartedly.

    Nate Lavender, a 2021 draftee out of the U of Illinois has been pitching great for Syracuse and we may see him as soon as this year.

    Last night, the lefty struck out 5 in 2 2/3 IP.

    This year he's 3-2 2.57 with 57K in 35 IP. His WHIP is 1.14.

    Down 8-5 with two out in the ninth this afternoon, third baseman Nick Meyer (he's usually a catcher) cracked a three-run homer to tie it all up, and the Mets beat the WooSox in the 10th with the clown car action.

    The game represented Justin Jarvis' AAA debut, and while five runs (three earned) in three innings is inauspicious, the cause was served. Tomás Nido went 4-for-5, raising his batting average to .313 and his OPS to .844.

    Justin Jarvis getting his head handed to him at Syracuse, and walking the ballpark as he goes.

    I'm trying to look at it as him being a AA pitcher this year, forced into action over his head at AAA, and he'll catch up next year, but ... .

    Took in our last game of the season, last night, a 4-3 walk off walk in the 10th giving the Mets the win over the hated AAA MFYs of Scranton Wilkes Barre.

    Sat with a couple of my run club buddies and their families and had a nice time. Won a $10 Dave & Buster's gift card, too, thanks to having a "lucky signature" of Mike Vasil in my program.
