I like Fergie's list, although I might replace him with Jim Palmer.

I like his list too, although looks like he feels bad about not choosing Koufax

Guys I've seen:

Koufax

Gibson

Carlton

Re: What's your dream starting rotation?

I have to wonder how guys like Walter Johnson or Christy Mathewson would fare today.

1. If they were born in 1995 and came through the same system that today's pitchers did.

- OR -

2. If they emerged from a time machine and got assigned to the rosters of the Nationals and the Mets, respectively.

Re: What's your dream starting rotation?

Who wouldn't wanna see Rube Waddell pitching? Or Babe Ruth? I'd take those two. I'm assuming you're getting their peaks. So late Koufax, not Brooklyn Dodger Koufax, for example. Then I'll also take deGrom. And Pedro Martinez. And Koufax.

Re: What's your dream starting rotation?

Only going with pitchers I actually watched.

I will go with Seaver, Gibson, Carlton, Maddox, and Ryan. I really wanted to put Koufax on the list, but I was a little too young to actually remember him pitching.

I would put an in-his-prime Pedro Martinez on that list.

I like Fergie's plan. If it's my dream, I want myself to be in there.

Me, Walter Johnson, Leroy "Satchel" Paige , Tom Seaver, and Sandy Koufax.

Edgy ascribing to the saying "you can't win them all". However, 80% will get you a championship.

Good call on Satchel. Didn't think of him. Now I want him on my rotation.

Re: What's your dream starting rotation?

I thought about Satchel Paige (and Bob Feller), but opted to go with pitcher I can recall witnessing their greatness. I have read several books on Satchel Paige (and the Negro Leagues) and I have no doubt h was truly one of the greatest to ever take the mound.

For some reason I seem to recall seeing Paige pitching an inning or two

Maybe in an exhibition or OT game? It was long long ago of course

Time Machine: They'd stand no chance. They'd get lit up every outing and eventually quit.

Born in 1995:

I'm not sure how you calculate the odds here, but a few nuggets to consider:

Quick google search says the US Population in 1915 was about 97M ppl, 90% of whom were white. Take away the women, and you have Walter slotting in as the best pitcher in about $43.5M people. Today, the US population is about 334M people, and thankfully, all races are eligible. Since a woman has yet to crack the majors, we'll take away half the population again, leaving us 167M people.

There were 24 teams in 1915, and there are 30 now, which means 6 more pitching staffs to fill out from the extra 123M eligible folks. Of course, today, Walter has to compete with folks from PR, the Dominican, Korea, Japan, Canada, Mexico, etc. Foreign born players comprise about 30% of MLB rosters.

I mean, there's no way to know how Walter, specifically, would end up. But I'm sure people smarter than me could calculate the odds that he makes the majors, dominates, etc.

I'd think his floor is pretty high still. Like as long as he doesn't get injured you'd think he'd at least be a high-level college player.

I bet Johnson would outpitch the penguin, though.
