Bartolo Colon will throw out the first pitch today on the anniversary of his home run heard throughout the Mets verse They could sign him for a day and possibly have an increase of offensive production, or not Joey Lucchesi will start for us and Ryan Feltner. Of Feltner's last three starts he earned to wins on the road I would guess that Buck may shakeup the lineup today, or not LGM

Really tough strike three call against Alonso. The pitch was slow enough that anybody would have swung if it was over the plate. Keith would tell you, though, that you've got to protect with two strikes.

Vientos for Vogelbach, Mauricio for Guillorme, and a pitch-back machine for Nido is what I would do immediately but you're right, you just have to wait and hope.

If I had to single out one Met to watch, right now it'd be Scherzer. If he doesn't get back to form, the Mets are in trouble. And if he's in decline, he'll get even worse.

No disagreement that Vientos is ready for the majors. Assuming you can't release Voegelbach, what's your second-choice plan to make roster space? Carry one fewer pitcher? Release Pham? Phantom injury to Escobar? Demote Guillorme?

Well, you can release Vogelbach. It's just a counterproductive choice.



In most cases, the strategy for adding a guy when there are no obvious moves to clear roster space is to wait for tomorrow and there's a good chance that something will come up.



Either way, the real current shortcoming, as Gary said over and over today, has been on the pitching side of the ledger.

The Mets are 17-17. While some changes might be needed, it is not panic time yet. Releasing a 400 OBP hitter who was good for us last year seems pretty panicky. Glass half full on the offense: there was a time after years ago where it felt like the Mets were average everywhere on offense. Being average everywhere makes it harder to improve via trade. This year, the Mets are killing it with Nimmo, Lindor, Alonso and McNeil. If they don't start getting more of the other spots, it should be easier to improve via trade. And hey, at least the Mets didn't give 87 million to Contreras - a month into his Cardinals (10-24) tenure they seem to have serious buyer's remorse, having just announced he will shift to DH as the pitchers basically don't trust him.

There's no game tomorrow, so no. My move is generally to let the opportunity reveal itself. It always does. The next time a cab jumps a curb, it's better to have a guy who is overdue to come up than it is to have a guy who isn't ready. One shouldn't be looking to force the issue. I'm certainly of the opinion that 100 pitches is a false limit that isn't saving arms or winning games, and 13 or 14 pitchers on a staff is a silly choice that just guarantees more innings for lesser performers, so if I really had to get Vientos up for the next series, I'd demote a pitcher. I don't think any of the relievers have options, so it would probably have to be Megill or Lucchesi, and as Joey just pitched, he would be first up. The other option is to try to pass a reliever through waivers, and after today's show, Yacabonis would be the best candidate to squeak through. So there you go. DFA Jimmy. I don't think that's a big help, but there's a big old gun to my head so I had to make a move. Forgive me, Jimmy!

I think it's an interesting discussion point: do they have too many relievers on the roster? I'd probably go that route too, although I could be talked into cutting Escobar.

Here's the case against Vogelbach: he doesn't have the power (despite the HR we saw yesterday) you expect and need; he only hits against RHPs; he requires a PR in the late innings; he can't play the field. In other words, he can't do less than he does. I don't hate him and he has value on a better team but this isn't a better team right now and I'm trying to get Vientos in the lineup. You have to waive somebody and with the way the SPs are going, you need the Jimmy Yacobonis' of the world. Or maybe a "cab will jump the curb".

I think apart from the randomness of distribution of outcomes, history suggests he does have the power. The rest of your observances suggest that he's a specialist, and that's very much true, and specialists historically have very little margin for error. There's little room for a placekicker who isn't nailing his extra points. But the game is being engineered in several ways to create more indulgences for specialists, and many of them are prospering for their teams. I'm not certain I can summon up any game lost because of the lack a broader skillset from him. It's certainly plausible that pinch-running for him meant they were left without a pinch-hitter later in a game when they otherwise could have used one, but I can't think of when. Yacabonis' failure loomed largest yesterday certainly. I hope we can all agree there. Beyond that, I disagree that cabs jumping curbs (a reference to non-baseball injuries) are a product or a byproduct of the absence of an eighth reliever on the roster.

Mets might promote Vientos and Mauricio which would not bode well for Vogelbach and Guillorme I do advocate finding a trade partner for Canha and Pham New rules reward speed athleticism and contact per Theo Epstein and I do buy into this thought Baty Alvarez Vientos Mauricio. Imagine if they got good in a hurry?

JD Davis has more homers than any Met not named Pete Alonso, and a higher OPS than Brandon Nimmo. He's better than Canha and Escobar. This trade set the team back, badly, IMO.

A disastrous trade in hindsight, for sure. But if JD were hitting like this last year, the trade doesn't happen.



I don't know if there is a place for Vientos on the roster without removing Vogelbach. And while Maurico is certainly doing well, I think they'll need to give him more time at second before they can throw him at the position in New York. (Assuming he'd go there, with McNeil headed to left and Canha to the bench.

I'd agree one less bullpenner to fit a Vientos would be best but otherwise, Canha to me looks like the odd man out. He's sitting a lot already and not hitting like he did last year. I suspect Vientos will whiff too much up here but am very interested in Mauricio.

I agree that he's the odd man out. Pham has really marginalized him. (I'm not sure that I'm a phan of that, but alas.) I don't think he's a good candidate to finish the season with the team, but what happens over the next week is a greater degree of guesswork. Part of my problem with the DH* is that bench players have fewer opportunities to make themselves indispensable in a role, and largely exist to sit around waiting for somebody to get hurt or slump his way out of the lineup, which is a crappy and demoralizing reason to exist. * One of the larger facets of my large and polyfacetic problem.

I think it's important that we not distort the problem. I think the only start that fits that description this season was the emergency start by Denyi Reyes*, which was very much a failed effort, but was probably going to be aborted early under any circumstances. And as I suggested above, it's easier to get starters deeper into games if you work with a more flexible philosophy of using the hook. 　　* On edit: In the game in which Scherzer was ejected, he came out after three scoreless innings as well, so that qualifies, too.
