IGT — NYM@CHC, 5/23, Back Out There

Edgy MD
May 22 2023 09:06 AM

The Mets try to build on their resurgent homestand by invading Chicago behind the arm of Kodai Senga. Drew Smyley, who has built a long career out of stubborn mediocrity, is off to a terrific start for the Cubs, and he defends the honor of the Wrigley faithful in this one. I imagine the Mets aren't going to set a record in terms of most opposing lefthanded starters, but it kind of feels that way.

Game starts at 7:40 which I suppose will never really feel right at Wrigley. But since pretty much the entire league is filled with guys who were born after the lights went up at Wrigley, I guess it's actually a thing. The lights at Wrigley are older than most parks at this point, I suppose.

Speaking of lefties, check out Mr. Met muscling up!

Re: IGT — NYM@CHC, 5/23, Back Out There

Only 5 parks other than Wrigley are older than 8/8/88 when Wrigley had it's first night game:

Kauffman Stadium -- Kansas City Royals

Oakland Coliseum -- Oakland Athletics

Angel Stadium -- Los Angeles Angels

Dodger Stadium -- Los Angeles Dodgers

Fenway Park -- Boston Red Sox

SkyDome in Toronto opened in 1989, IIRC.

Mets down, 4-1.

"Honey, I think the dog needs an out."

"OK, I'll take care of her."

  "Are you walking that way?"

    "Yeah, why?"

"I was going to go with you. We need some things from Safeway."

Family walks down to Safeway. Dog, who has grown rather immobile, gets towed in a wagon, but we put her out every few houses to sniff and maybe go pee or poo. We get to Safeway, and the wifey goes in for a few things. I find a strip of grass to put the dog out, but she just lies there until her mother comes out of the store, at which point, I pick her up and put her back in the wagon.

We head back toward home and I get back to the screen, and realize my glasses are missing. They're just readers, but I've grown dependent on them. I squint at the screen and notice the Mets have fallen into a deeper hole, 6–2, and I feel sad, as well as stupid. My wife says not to worry, because I have backups, but shit, I just know I lost them bending over to pick up the dog one of the 11 times while I was out.

So I grab my phone to use as a flashlight and head back out. I have to squint like a mofo to read the apps and get my flashlight working, and retrace my steps, taking time to search on any strip of grass we put the dog out at. The good news is ... I find my glasses! The bad news is ... they're all the way back at Safeway!

The other good news is that the Mets got a run back, and Nogo had a sweet inning while I was typing this. The other good news is that I'm not going to ask my doctor if I need Keytruda. Let's go, Mets!!

This is how they were scoring prior to this past week: almost all the runs coming via solo HRs or on outs (Sac Flies, GOs) where a hit c/would have plated multiples.

Re: IGT — NYM@CHC, 5/23, Back Out There

Pushing out Senga because he's used to an extra day of rest based on the Japanese rotation, but then trotting out a subpar lineup and watching Tylor Megill be bad at sports, well, I'd say that move didn't really work out. Keeping Senga healthy will be less critical if it means jamming a loss up in front of each of his starts.

I personally went to a Syracuse Mets game, under perfect 78 degree sunshine, and promptly watch them go down 9-0 in the first two innings, only to come back and take an 11-10 lead, and then lose 17-12 (we departed in the 8th, down 15-12, as my wife and daughter were beat).

Re: IGT — NYM@CHC, 5/23, Back Out There

You're too kind.

I guess the point is: I missed an hour in the middle of the game.

And though I missed little in the way of game-altering action, and the time was, by most measures, probably better spent on the struggling dog, the groceries, and the recovery of my reading glasses, there remains an absurd but haunting notion in the back of my mind that suggests the outcome would have been different had I remained loyally at my screen, rooting on players who can't hear me and don't know of my existence.

It's stupid, but I was on thread duty for the last five games and they won, despite almost exclusively playing catch-up ball. I was on thread duty for a sixth game, they fell behind, and then they fell further behind, and lost, as I missed the middle innings. It's stupid, but part of me feels compelled to step up and own that loss.
