The very first pitcher in Mets history has died at 93.

Ugh. Iconic Met coming and going.

Didn't invent the splitter, but was probably the pitch's greatest evangelist.

He was the oldest living Met. That honor now belongs to someone named "Willie Mays", who turned 92 last month. Galen Cisco moves into the Top Ten, and Tim Harkness into the Top Twenty.

Too bad he waited until he joined Houston and taught it to Mike Scott instead of some of his Mets teammates.

He was one of the ex-Brooklyn Dodgers they had on those early teams (to attract their fans)and arguably the most successful pitcher.

He got MVP votes in 1959 -- finishing 13th. And he had a good run managing the Giants, with a pennant and an overall winning record.

And didn't R.C. once play golf with Soupcan's dad?

There was some story about that way back when.

Maybe the lurking 'Can will tear himself away from the super secret alternate forum he posts on and fill us in on the deets.

This also pares the fraternity of living 1955 Dodgers down to two — Erskine and Koufax. Erskine is also part of the dwindling group of MLB WWII vets, having served in the Navy at the tale end of the war.
