Choking on Canada

Edgy MD
Jun 07 2023 08:23 AM

To judge from my social media feed, most of the Northeastern US is being plagued by lousy air quality caused by systems drawing down the smoke from Canadian wildfires. It seems the same patterns that have given us so much pleasantly unseasonably cool weather the last several weeks are now presenting the bill, in a way.

I'm down here below the Mason-Dixon Line, and we're rationing our outdoor activity, so I can only guess what you folks north of me (most of you) are getting. Seawolf is in Rochester and he posted a picture of a sky that looks pretty toxic.

Lorcan's school emailed that all outdoor activities are canceled, the DOE is doing the same.i work in pulmonary and it definitely is impacting our asthma kids

I saw some images of the New York and Philadelphia skylines this morning and the haze was very thick.

My girlfriend's son was arguing that it wasn't safe for him to walk from his front door to the school bus this morning (a walk of about a hundred feet), but he was overruled.

There's going to be a lot of new stock footage for future post-Apocalypse movies.

having the worst air quality on the entire planet today. The entire planet.

In fairness, a lot of folks have also been choking on New Jersey. Jersey typically gets higher rainfall than her Easern seaboard neighbors, and does a better job than those neighbors supporting her grasslands, but now those grasslands are turning into starter fuel for forest fires.

It's pretty bad in the 'Cuse. Basically everything outdoors related is cancelled today.

I went for a run yesterday and at the advice of internet wogs I retreated to a woodsier trail where the canopy of tree cover allowed me to at least get my miles in. But it's rough, rough I tell ya

Worse than yesterday for sure. It's like sunset at midday. Smelled like something was burning right down the street, not hundreds of miles away. It's going to stick around for a while, too.

You can check your local air quality at airnow.gov. Just type in your zip code.

I'm currently at 270, which is 'Very Unhealthy', but at least that's down from 307 this afternoon which was 'Extremely Unhealthy'.

It sounds legitimate. Has a .gov extension. From the About page:

AirNow is a partnership of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Park Service, NASA, Centers for Disease Control, and tribal, state, and local air quality agencies. Complete list of AirNow partners. Agencies all over the country send their monitoring data to AirNow for display. The Department of State provides data from U.S. Embassies and Consulates to inform personnel and citizens overseas, and the U.S. Forest Service and NOAA provide fire and smoke data

My ZIP code was at 361 when I woke up this morning, and now is down to 325.

Re: Choking on Canada

Craziness isn't limited to our country

From a friend in Canada:
I was just on Twitter, saw a thread about the fires. Immediately became a conspiracy theory clearinghouse. Lots of talk from run of the mill arson to chemtrails, energy weapons, eco terrorists, "they just want to make us wear masks!", the WEF, climate activists, Trudeau's incompetent evil government, plus the obligatory mentions of the COVID vaccines (those didn't cause the fires, but just can't miss a chance to bring them up). Any talk like that down there or did I just fall down a fringe Twitter rabbit hole?

I haven't checked in on FOX to see what they're saying about it.

BTW - another friend in Canada says there's isn't much haze near Toronto and adds it was worse 20-30 years ago before they shut down some coal mines.
