No deets yet cuz of the whole approval thing (reading scroll on MLBN while watching--with sound down cuz I'm listening to music--TOR/LAA) but the teams apparently have agreed on the personnel involved. Max was saying after last night's game that he wanted 'to have a talk' concerning the trading of Roberston. I guess they did! btw, about two seconds after I flipped on MLBN to see if they were showing a late afternoon game, the first pitch I saw was Angel OF Taylor Ward taking a pitch in the face. Was down, or at best on one knee, for a long time before finally getting carted off.

He's also not allegedly 17 y/o From the Bahamas so an int'l FA. Limited stats from '23 only in rookie ball and Dominican summer leagues. Looks so far that unproven though high ceiling guys are their current obsession.

The best thing about unloading Max is the money it frees up for next year. Max still has his moments, but he is far from the pitcher he was even 2 years ago. I don't expect him to be better next year. Time takes it's toll.

I'll take that risk over getting a 25-year-old marginal player all day and every day, and I doubt Scherzer would have fetched more than a marginal established player from anyone else. Even if 90% of those high ceiling guys fail, the 10% who succeed make it a worthwhile gamble. Makes sense for Texas, too. They're contending and need whatever arms they can get, which is what happens when your pitching Plan A involves a full season from JdG. Wonder how much of Scherzer's 23 and 24 salary the Mets are picking up.

There's about 35% of the season left, plus the 2024 player option that Scherzer will exercise barring a miracle. So Scherzer is owed about $58 million, and I'd guess Steve picks up at least $45 million of that. It does give luxury tax relief, though, as the full salary would be applied to the Rangers' cap.

Andy Martino says Luisangel Acuna would be included in the deal. He's 21, and having a solid season in the AA Texas League. #71 prospect in all of baseball. Born on Darryl Strawberry's 40th birthday.

According to USA Sports, Scherzer waived his no-trade clause and the deal is on, pending a physical and agreement on financial terms between the teams. There are certainly lots of choices that fall somewhere between rookie level teenagers and and 25 y/o low ceiling types. Not knocking those they've targeted, just don't want them to limit themselves to just one type of option. Plus I'm a bit worried about Steve acting somewhat Wilponian by forever chasing the latest trends. 'Oh, spend megabucks on legacy FAs ... sure, we can do that'. 'What's that you say, the new rules favor the young and athletic? ... OK, let's switch gears and go after those'

Martino saying Acuna and are paying $22.5 million. No Leiter. Martino is correcting his Tweet. Correction: Texas is paying Scherzer $22.5 MM. Mets are paying it down to that level. My mistake for typing it backwards.

It really tells you how grossly salaries are suppressed for young players. They're giving up Max Scherzer and $35 million for Luisangel Acuña — a price one would figure they'd never would have signed Acuña for directly.
