It's interesting to distinguish the countries that trace their founding to an initial violent uprising, vs. those who trace it to a decisive and final military victory, vs. those who trace it to an internal legislative declaration, vs. those who trace it a legislative declaration by their overlords, saying "Whatever, fine, you're free and independent."



No small amount of countries, like Haiti, celebrate their independence on January 1, because that's when whatever act of severance by the former overlords went into effect, so all the overlords could have time to get their stuff out.
