TWiB Notes - August 7 thru 13

- Rained out in Philly before even starting where the Phils were set to host the Nats

- Rain delayed in Pittsburgh where the Pirates have a 7-5 lead over Atlanta in the 6th so, just as in our game, that one is official it they can't re-start.

btw, Spenser Strider might lead the planet in K-rates (at least for starters) but he also gets cuffed around every now and then and tonight the Bucs

hit him up for 6 R / 5 H / 3 BBs in just in 2.2 IP. He's had several of those type this year including once to us (we lost anyway) and tonight pushes

his ERA for the season to up near 4.00 Not horrible obviously but also to exactly CY territory

- Yanx down 2-0 in the 4th vs ChiSox on a day where big FA signee Carlos Rodon goes back on the IL

Just six starts / 27 Innings pitched this season

It's not a strong year for the NL Cy Young race. I guess Blake Snell is leading with a deGromian year of a strong ERA and an utterly indifferent win-loss record.

But he's sort of hanging in there with a bunch of five-inning starts in the second half so far.

Keynan Middleton has stirred up a hornets' nest, coming over to the Yankees from the White Sox, and reporting that the team culture on Chicago (one team that the Mets almost kinda looked good against in July, if you squinted) has gone to shit, ratting out his bullpenmates for sleeping during games and telling the story of Yasmani Grandal slapping Tim Anderson in the face while he was soaking in a tub in the trainers' room.

Though Grandal has denied the account, ESPN claims to have independently verified both the sleeping and the slapping. Anderson is declining to comment, but it appears to have been a tough couple of weeks for his face.

How weird to suddenly realize that the player everybody in the league hates is named "Tim Anderson." That's not the name of the industry punk that everyone wants a go at. That's the name of someone you want to be secretary of the treasury.

Some talk of Justin Steele

Re: TWiB Notes - August 7 thru 13

White Sox went on to win the other NYC/CHI tilt 5-1

- AND it was a Gerrit Cole game which is the one day in five they definitely can't afford to lose

- AND Aaron Boone got ejected again, and it was for arguing balls and strikes again

In an era where manager ejections are severely down due to replay, Boone has got to be leading the league over the last couple seasons

as he once again shows that the Yanx don't just want all the calls to go their way but they expect them to. If the NYY say it's a ball and

the ump disagrees then the ump is, by definition, wrong.

No word on whether or not he referred to his team as "savages" this particular time.

So they slip back into last place behind slumping Boston and are now just 3 games over .500 with a dead even RS/RA differential

They also resumed the Braves/Pirates game in Pittsburgh after a lengthy delay with the Pirates holding on for a 7-6 win in a game where

they led early 6-0 ... which sounds about right for an Atlanta game this season. The only surprise was that the Braves scored just one in

the top of the 9th and not six.

The first outing since his no-hitter for Houston's Framber Valdez didn't go quite as well. Baltimore hit him up for 6 runs on 8 hits thru 7, although most of the damage was done early when the O's got 2 in the 1st then 3 more in the 2nd

So with all the TWiB'n going on and despite a loss they're still camped out

at 7 1/2 games out of a wildcard spot. Mathematically alive, yay!

Newly acquired Michael Lorenzen no-hits the Nationals for Philly

Re: TWiB Notes - August 7 thru 13

I don't care if it involves an NL East team or not, the Marlins, down 7-2, scoring 1 in the 8th then 5 more in the 9th

to beat the Yanx 8-7 just might me not hate baseball for a short time this weekend.

Bottom 9 w/Clay Holmes on the mound: 2B, K, IF 1B, BB, E-1 (2R), 3B (2R) BB, GW RBI 1B

That would be Mike Lorezen of Fullerton Union HS in Fullerton CA

Fullerton Union features nine alums who went on to play MLB, four of whom were pitchers.

* Mike Warren:pitched for three season (1983-85 Oakland) and won only 9 ML games but the final start of of rookie season was a no-hitter

* Steve Busby: eight seasons (1972-76, '78-'80, all with KC) including a no-hitter on Apr 27 1973

* the aforementioned Mike Lorenzen who now has a no-no to his credit

and ...

* Walter F. Johnson, author of a no-hitter (his only one) on July 1, 1920 winning (as he so often did) by a 1-0 score

Now how fucked up is that?!?!?!!!

btw, the non-pitching Fullerton Union alum:

Jim Campanis (1966-1973), Del Crandall (1949-1966), Keith Ginter (2000-2005), Willard Hershberger (1938-1940), and Arky Vaughn (1932-1948)

So that's four for four in no-hitters and two for nine in HoF'ers!!

The Dodgers finally retired Fernando Valenzuela's number on Friday, and I ... guess this is what Fernando looks like now?
