Dangling Skippers

It strikes me as unusual that all 30 MLB managers who started the 2023 season are still at it. Not a single in-season lopping this year. I'm'a guess that's due in part to the expanded playoff picture making a meaningful late-season turnaround still conceivable for teams playing poorly. But the expanded playoff picture didn't keep teams from dealing off key parts at the trade deadline, so that's only getting you so far.

I suppose this'll mean a handful of guys go immediately at the end of the season, but it's not clear who. The fact that both highly paid New York teams have had sloggy seasons has now qualified for the adverb "famously," but Buck Showalter's senior status has deflected at least some of the blame away from him in the popular mindset, and Aaron Boone's antics in the face of losing have kind of enhanced his brand, even as the losses have damaged it, so neither of those fates are clear.

I'm guessing Ollie Marmol goes first. Bob Melvin probably re-retires, and maybe joins the Yankees a year or two down the road. He's only 61.

The White Sox stunk, but Pedro Grifol (who?) probably gets a mulligan on his rookie year (The Luis Rojas Principle).

Who else is on the block? Phil Nevin? A.J. Hinch (three straight losing seasons in Detroit)? Bud Black feels like he's spent his whole career there.

I think Grifol is done. The new GM will want to build his own team, including the manager.

I still cant figure out what the last guy in St Louis did to get run out of town, so maybe Marmol sticks around to prevent any "I told you so" critics.

Nevin cant win with the two best players on the planet, so I think he's gone, too, even if it's not necessarily his fault.

The White Sox fired Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams. If the clubhouse is as bad as depicted, I bet the manager is part of the housecleaning.

Not a point to be lost there.

I bet Hinch gets another year. He gets points for being there during the teardown and a number of the prospects are starting to come up and do well -- like Parker Meadows this week.

Boone might get thrown off the bus. I suspect people are starting to tire of his antics.

Here in Cleveland, the word is that Terry Francona is about ready to call it a career after squeezing what he could out of Jose Ramirez and the Twenty-Five Question Marks for the past eleven years.

So, Mattingly, to the Bronx, Terry Francona to St. Louis, Joe McEwing to Colorado, and, um ... Bob Geren to San Diego.

I didn't even think about Mattingly to the Bronx. I forgot he was available now! Didn't they already retire his number?

Just throwing darts, but yeah, they totally retired his number.

Macabrely ("Macabrely"?) Funny Note: The Mets have hired seven managers this century, and for each, so far, it's been their last gig.
