I'm wondering whether Arraúz or Mendick gets the bad news, and then I remembered, "Oh, yeah! Roster expansion!"

What uniform number would you give him?

I'd say... 3.

He'll be so excited to finally get here that he'll beat the bus by 10 minutes.

It'll be hilarious if he gets 74.

They might keep his britches to a reasonable size and stay with the No. 60 they'd issued him in spring training.

He's been wearing #2 here in the 'Cuse, I assume he'd get that same number in Flushing.

I'll be the downer and say he's going to hit .107 with 2 RBI in 28 at-bats, then we're going to trade him in the off-season for an over-the-hill pitcher who is at least 33 years of age.

That could happen if Narvaez switches to 10, which he'd worn previously.

Bret Baty and Jose Butto will be called up on Friday to join Mauricio.

As the song goes, two out of three ain't bad.

Ah I had somehow not noticed that Narvaez was already wearing the deuce

As long as they don't give him #5.

Actually I wish they would. Nothing against Wright (just against the whole concept of retiring numbers) but it's a bit silly to have not only numbers that ARE retired but also numbers that (you think) are going to be retired, or should be retired, or could be retired someday.

Like I said, retire them all right now and be done with it already.

He seems like a 28, which appears to be free at the moment.

No one is ever wearing 5 or 8 again.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

Not only retired numbers, but pre-retired numbers. Should the Mets be careful about assigning 48 again? 13? 15? Just to be safe, I mean.

Re: Mauricio up on Friday

Being thoughtful about reassigning numbers of highly honored departed players has certainly got a ton of precedent.

Re: Mauricio up on Friday

The options are:

1. Assign number 5 immediately after David Wright was done with it.

2. Retire number 5 immediately after David Wright was done with it.

3. Allow for some time for his legacy to settle in and then schedule a retirement ceremony at a mutually convenient time.

Just because it's inevitable (and I'm pretty sure it is) there's no need to hurry it.

Re: Mauricio up on Friday

Didn't a player a few years ago go to the family of a deceased player whose number had been retired and ask if he could wear that number as a tribute to the old player?

Not sure whether the request was granted.

Re: Mauricio up on Friday

I seem to recall something about Willie Mays being asked to give Barry Bonds permission to wear number 24 for the Giants. I don't know if it never happened, or if the permission was asked and refused, or granted but declined. Either way, Bonds wore 25 as a Giant where he was 24 for most of his time as a Pirate.

Mauricio, Bo Derek fan that he is, has been assigned 10.

Willie approved 24 for Barry, but even Barry Bonds wouldn't ask for it in SF.

Ronny M wears 10, bats 9th and plays 2nd in his debut.

And I think the 3rd option above is generally the right approach. #5 should continue to be held out of circulation until it is properly retired for John Olerud.

Re: Mauricio up on Friday

My first impressions based on a stupidly small sample size

*Looks like a great athlete. Big, strong, fast kid. I didn't realize he was as fast as he was and was surprised to see he stole 24 bases this year. Seem generally more coordinated than Amed Rosario.

*Doesn't seem to have the super soft hands you'd want from a middle infielder. So maybe 3B or OF is in his future. Looks fast enough to play OF.

*Swing seems kinda long with a lot of holes. I think he gets by with good bat to ball skills, but it seems like you could clean things up a bit. Certainly he hits the ball plenty card, so maybe you can cut down on that swing while still maintaining good power.

*Even with his good start, he doesn't seem to have any pitch recognition. Swung at some really bad ones. I think it's a skill that players don't generally develop anyway, so I guess I'm not that surprised. But man. If he ever learned to pick up on the off speed....

Re: Mauricio up on Friday

Tall wiry guys can have a lot of violence in their game — especially as infielders. Even watching Rosario run to first could make my knees hurt. And he — and Reyes to a lesser extent — could have trouble with balls close to the ground.

I don't get as violent a read in Mauricio's game as I did in Rosario's when he came up. And there's some comfort there, as all the pounding and ripping can lead to fatigue, injuries, and holes in the swing.

I like Mauricio's swing and batting eye from the left so far, moreso than from the right. He sure seems to want to go deep, and I hope he gets past that and lets the power come. Vientos' swing has looked much more fluid of late, and hopefully Mauricio will calm down a little.

But I can't argue with the results, so what do I know?

He is one of a few Mets rookies to have had multiple hits in each of their first two games.

IIRC, Greg Goosen is on that list.

Milledge: first 9 games, .300 BA, .667 SLG, 9 hits, 8 RBI in 32 plate appearances.

Keith Miller hit in his first seven games and 11 of his first 12.

Then he got optioned back to Tidewater, which I guess gives an idea of the offensive depth of the Mets in 1987.

The weird one, that I have to keep looking up periodically to remind myself it's true, is Strawberry's miserable first 40 games: .180 BA, .562 OPS, 51 K. And ended up with ROTY. Similar body type to Mauricio.

On Edit: hadda change OBP to OPS--.562 OBP is great, .562 OPS sucks.
