IGT 09/28 — Fish in Flushing

Tonight is Buck Showalter Windbreaker night. I think that means the first 15,000 fans will all receive a Buck Showalter-inspired Mets-branded windbreaker. It also might possibly mean the first 15,000 all get to personally experience Buck Showalter breaking wind. That's a possibility too. The winners of the Mets minor-league awards, which need a new, non-Sterling-affiliated name, will be in the house and invited to collectively throw out a bunch of first pitches.

Peterson ending his season in style with seven shutout innings and his career high in pitches. Too bad there's not a chance in hell he'll see the eighth. But assuming Luzardo is coming back out, it's good to see two pitchers reaching the seventh.

I like the LHP vs Chisholm and it's kind if cool that it's Anthony Kay with the game on the line. Not ideal maye, but kinda cool.

So how does this work? If the game doesn't resume, I think the Marlins' ninth inning gets wiped out (because the Mets didn't have a ninth inning), and the Mets win 1-0. That's the way it used to work, anyway. I don't know if that rule is still in effect.

I was thinking the same. If this outcome isn't necessary one way or another for the playoff picture, the Mets would get a win, at least under the olden-times rules.

I got home nearly eighteen hours ago, and it's still a crazy night to have been at the ballpark (albeit in hermetically sealed environs), considering that the game isn't over.

This statement grows more accurate the more I consider it, as we can't state with factual certainty that one team or the other is winning. The reality of the lead has degraded into a degree of likelihood that one team or the other is ahead.

So what's the verdict on this game? We know it's not going to be completed, but who gets the win? Baseball Reference's stats have the Mets at 162 games, but with only 161 decisions. The standings on MLB.com have the Mets and Marlins also having played 161 games. Nobody won this game? But it's not a tie? Is this how it's going to remain?

MLB quietly shifted it into the win column for the Mets in its At Bat app standings in the last couple of hours, though on a different part of the app, it's still a suspended game and the box score doesn't reflect any decision. I sent this to Baseball Reference. I suppose I should try writing to the Elias Sports Bureau? Do you know what is the final resolution of the Mets/Marlins game of September 28, 2023? The Mets led 1-0 after 8 innings. The Marlins scored two in the top of the 9th, but then the game was halted by rain. According to the rules, as I understand them, the two runs that Miami scored get canceled because the Mets never had a chance to bat in that inning. Since the game was never resumed, it would be a Mets win. But it has remained in a "suspended state", with the standings showing both teams having played 161 games. Neither team got a win or a loss. Could it be a 2-1 tie, as illogical as that sounds? It seems that MLB hasn't made any kind of decision regarding this game. Have you heard anything? Thank you!

MLB presents a box score that no longer contains the top of the 9th nor ambiguity, and the standings there and on ESPN have our record at 75-87. Mets apparently won, 1-0, after a delay of approximately 132 hours.

I just realized that the Mets Roster Central database had Grant Hartwig with a 5.05 ERA in 35 2/3 innings. His stats for this game being wiped out gave him a 4.84 ERA in 35 1/3 innings. A much stronger position with which to enter free agency!
