IGT 10/1 — Tag on 2023

Barring the real possibility of a brief annexure to be written on Monday, the Mets will pull the curtain on the 2023 season Sunday afternoon in a 3:10 matchup against the Phils. Remember that MLB likes to maximize the closing-day drama now by having all teams play a scheduled final game on the same day at the same time. So 3:10 it is.

It would be cool if the Mets were playing in Yuma, but nobody comes up with great ideas like that.

Most of the drama was let out of the balloon today, but there's still some action to play out. Will Francisco Lindor achieve the coveted 32/32 status? Will he drive in his 100th run? Will the Mets, currently rocking a run differential of -5, reach the break-even point? Could they possibly get their heads above water going into the offseason? is there a 50th homerun within reach for Pete Alonso? How about starter José Butto? Does he have it in him to garner a second career win before the lights go down on the season?

How about those crossbody bags that will be given out to patrons? Will they be the sort of sporty thing that joins the average fan's go-to bag of accessories? Or will it be just another piece of crap that everyone's passing through their hands only briefly on the way to the landfill?

These and more questions will be answered tomorrow afternoon. And I suppose it's possible one or two might be answered on Monday.

See you at Citi Field!

Having the games start at the same time makes a lot of sense for competitive reasons. Tough to chalk that one up to “maximiz[ing] drama.”

I certainly didn't mean to dismiss it.

As far as I can read, making sense for competitive reasons and maximizing drama are pretty synonymous.

Alonso and Lindor become the only two Mets in the lineup at the starting and finish lines.

Phils go with a new pitcher for the second inning, and the Mets go down in order on seven pitches.

This one has Last Game of the Season tattooed on it.

Trivia Question Asks: Who was the first player in Mets history to record 10 career homers against the Phillies?

Cleon Jones would be my first guess.

I'd go Kranepool or Kingman.

Ron Swoboda is probably in the mix as well. Rusty Staub, too.

I'll also add Frank Thomas, just because these things tend to involve players who played for the day's opposing team.

I'm gonna go outside the box and say David Wright.

I'm leaning Kranepool over Kingman. I doubt (without looking) that Cleon even hit 100 HRs in his entire career.

Thomas is interesting. He woulda had to have really bombed Philly, disproportionately so, to hit 10 against them, or any Met opponent. He was a two and a half year Met.

I wouldn't think that.

Buck's been through sub-.500 seasons. He's been through a 115-loss season. That's baseball.
